Abstract

Munkánk elvezetett a rezonátoros kvantumelektrodinamika alapmodelljének több irányú kiterjesztéséhez, és más aktív kutatási területhez kapcsolásához. Az erős atom-fény csatolást bevezettük a Bose-Einstein kondenzátumok fizikájába. Először átlagtérelmélettel és lineáris zajanalízissel felderítettük a csatolt anyag-, és fényhullámok hibrid rendszerét. Kifejlesztettünk effektív modelleket, amelyek számot adnak a kvantumstatisztikai tulajdonságokról, sőt, még dinamikai jelenségekről is. A térbeli önszerveződés nemegyensúlyi fázisátalakítását elemeztük részletesen. At ETH csoportjában végzett kísérletek igazolták néhány jóslatunkat. A szórási megközelítés sikeresnek bizonyult szabad térben megfigyelhető, kollektív atomi jelenségek feltárásában is. Rev. Lett. van. 7 meghívott konferenciaelőadást tartottunk. | This project has led to the extension of the basic cavity QED model in various directions, connecting it to other very active research fields. First of all, the strong atom-field coupling has been incorporated to the physics of Bose-Einstein condensates. The composite, hybrid system of coupled matter and light waves was explored, first, by mean field theory and linearized fluctuation analysis. We developed effective models accounting for quantum statistical features, too, even for dynamical effects. The non-equilibrium phase transition of spatial self-organization was analysed in detail. Experimental observations in the ETH group verified some of our predictions. We established a link between cavity QED and the standard opto-mechanical model. This latter is a hot topic with the promise of observing quantum effects in the kinematics of massive, mesoscopic mirrors. We described them in a uniform framework, as being the two extremes of the same scattering model. This scattering approach proved to be useful also in studying collective atomic effects in free space. We went beyond the standard picture of optical lattices: we found corrections to the optical dipole potential due to back-action on the field and showed that many-body excitations in the form of density waves can be excited in an optical lattice. We published altogether 21 papers, among which there are 6 Phys.Rev. Letters. We presented 7 invited conference talks.

Mozgó atomok és molekulák erősen csatolt sugárzási terekben, rezonátorokban = Moving atoms and molecules in strongly-couped radiation fields, in cavities

P. Domokos, János K. Asbóth, A. Gábris +2 more

A fény-anyag kölcsönhatást mikroszkópikus szinten, az erős csatolás tartományában vizsgáltuk. Jelentős előrehaladást értünk el a sugárzási tér atomok mozgására kifejtett hatásának és a mozgás visszahatásának megértésében. Új módszereket dolgoztunk ki atomok és molekulák mozgásának kontrollált manipulálására, a részecskék termikus mozgásának csillapítására (``rezonátoros hűtés''), és atomok stabil csapdázására a hullámhossz töredékének megfelelő térfogatban. Kidolgoztuk a korábban felállított szemiklasszikus modell kvantummechanikai általánosítását. | The strong coupling regime of the light-matter interaction has been studied at a microscopic level. We have considerably progressed in the understanding of the radiation field forces exerted on the motion of atoms, and the back-action of the motion on the field. We have developed new methods for the controlled manipulation of atoms and molecules, for the damping of the thermal motion (``cavity cooling''), and for the stable trapping of particles in a tiny volume corresponding to the fraction of the optical wavelength. We have worked out the quantum mechanical generalization of the semiclassical model, set up previously. The numerical code, providing for the fully quantum description of simple systems based on the Monte-Carlo Wavefunction Method has been created and put in an easy-to-use, documented program package. The other main research direction addressed the collective effects arising from the atom-atom interaction mediated by the commonly strongly coupled resonator mode. We have revealed in detail the correlated motion of two atoms. By means of mean-field theory we have described the phase transitions of the many atom system, and determined its full phase diagram. One possible application of the coupled atom and cavity system lies in the processing of quantum information. We have developed new schemes for the realization of universal, multi-qubits quantum gates. Our results have been published in 25 papers, including four papers in the Physical Review Letters.

Kvantumoptikai rendszerek és kvantuminformatikai alkalmazásaik = Quantum optical systems and their applications in quantum information science

József Janszky, Петер Адам, János K. Asbóth +8 more

Kiterjesztettük a stimulált Raman adiabatikus átmenetet egy háromszintű, degenerált energianívójú atomra. Eljárásunkkal a teljes Hilbert-teret le lehet fedni a gerjesztő impulzusok paramétereinek változtatásával. Általánosítottuk a Pólya-féle számot kvantumos bolyongásokra. A hiperkockán történő keresést optimalizáltuk és a kvantumoptikai megvalósításnál fellépő zajt elemeztük. Javasoltuk az 1D kvantumbolyongás megvalósítását félvezető struktúrákban. Összefonódáson alapuló kvantumkommunikációs sémákat találtunk diszkrét és folytonos változós kvantumállapotok minimális klasszikus kommunikáció árán való távoli előállítására. Összefonódottság detektálására dolgoztunk ki új módszereket. Feles spinű részecskékből álló sokrészecskés rendszerekre megadtuk a kollektív mennyiségek mérésén alapuló összefonódottsági kritériumok teljes halmazát. Kis számú, egyenként is elérhető spinre is megadtunk optimális kritériumokat. | We extended the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage method to a degenerate three-level atom. Our scheme covers the full target Hilbert space by varying the exciting laser pulse parameters. We generalized the Pólya number for quantum walks. We optimized the search algorithm on a hypercube and analyzed the effect of noise in a quantum optical setting. We proposed the implementation of the 1D quantum walk in semiconductor structures. We found entanglement based quantum communication schemes that enable the remote preparation of a family of discrete and continuous variable quantum states at minimal classical communication cost. We developed new methods for detecting quantum entanglement. In systems with very many particles, where only collective quantities can be measured, we determined the full set of entanglement conditions for the case of spin-half particles. We also gave optimal criteria for a system of few, individually addressable spins. We developed new cooling schemes for the manipulation of motion of neutral atoms with far detuned laser fields, in which the hyperfine states carrying quantum bit information are not influenced. We considered various effects due to radiative atom-atom interaction in far detuned laser fields. We developed a procedure more efficient than other known numeric methods for calculating the time-evolution operator in open systems. We applied it for calculating the fidelity of a CNOT gate realized by atoms in a cavity.

Rendezetlen rendszerek statisztikus fizikája = Statistical physics of disordered systems

Ferenc Iglói, Róbert Juhász

A pályázat keretében nagy szabadsági fokú fizikai rendszerek kooperatív viselkedését vizsgáltuk rendezetlenség jelenlétében. | Within the project the cooperative behavior of physical systems with large degree of freedom is studied in the presence of disorder. We have determined the properties of singularities (phase transitions, Griffiths effects) and studied both equilibrium and nonequilibrium processes. For disordered quantum systems we have continued our studies on the use of the strong disorder renormalization group method to obtain the phase diagram and low energy excitations of different one- and two-dimensional systems. We have also obtained new results about entanglement of quantum systems and the related von Neumann entropy. For nonequilibrium systems we have studied ageing during nonequilibrium critical relaxation, as well as driven lattice gas systems in the presence of disorder. Finally, in the third field of disorder dominated classical systems we have studied phase transitions and the related geometrical problems of clusters. Our results obtained during this project have been published in 29 papers in international journals and for these we have already obtained more than 130 citations. During the project 1 PhD dissertation has been succesfully defended and two others are submitted for defence.

Kutatásaink 13 megjelent referált cikket eredményeztek. Válogatott eredményeink, négy egymással összefüggő területről a következők. \n1) Kvantum-rendszerek időben folytonos monitorozása, nanoelektronikai töltésdetektálás \nElemeztük egy kvantumpötty (kvantum-dot) töltésállapotának monitorozását egy csúcsérzékenységű árammérő folyamatos leolvasásával, tekintettel a kvantum-Zénon-effektusnak a kísérleti megfigyelésére [22]. \n2) A kvantumos-klasszikus átmenet mechanizmusai - a gravitáció lehetséges szerepe \nNumerikusan meghatároztuk a "súrlódásos" Newton-Schrödinger egyenlet szoliton-megoldását [25]. A selection of our results in four interrelated area follows. \n1) Time-continuous monitoring of quantum systems, charge detection with nanoelectronics \nWe have analysed the monitoring of a quantum dot by continuous reading out an ammeter of cutting edge sensitivity, to consider the experimental test of the quantum Zenon effect [22]. \n2) Mechanisms of the quantum-classical transition - possible role of gravity \nWe have numerically determined the solitonic solution of the "frictional" Newton-Schrödinger equation [25]. We have investigated the possibility that the appearence of a gravitational self-interaction can be identified in the measurable vibrational spectrum of a nanomechanical oscillator [20]. \n3) Theoretical background of quantum opto-mechanical experiments \nWe have pointed out limitations of experiments with nano-mirrors that are under current development in various laboratories. There is an unexpected strong request of (micro-kelvin) cooling [6], as well as a limitation of laser cooling due to the phase noise [24]. \n4) Quantum information \nSpringer published a textbook of ours [16]. We have introduced the notion of the so-called quantum gloves, to the economic quantum encoding the chirality [1]. Both Nature and Magyar Tudomany have reviewed this result.

Néhány gondolat a kvantummechanikáról (Hankiss Elemér emlékére)

N. Kroó

A kvantummechanika világképe gyökeresen eltér a mindennapi tapasztalatainkon alapuló képtől.Míg a klasszikus fizika építhetett a hagyományos matematika eredményeire, a kvantummechanika radikálisan új matematikát kívánt. Ezért tartom indokoltnak, hogy az ő emlékére egy rövid bepillantást tegyek a kvantummechanika rejtelmeibe, eljutva néhány, a társadalomtudományokba is behatoló gondolatig.aBSTraCT Spookiness of the quantum world of microsystems comes from being completely different from what we experience in our everyday life.Particle-wave duality, the tunnelling effect, superposition and entanglement, the typical phenomena of the quantum world are difficult to understand on the basis of daily experience. While the classical world can be described by exact equations, the quantum world can be grasped only probabilistically. This requires a new form of mathematics as well.Quantum mechanics penetrates from the non-living material world to the biological one and through biology into human and social phenomena.Elemér Hankiss became involved in the latter issues in the last years of his life. That is why it is appropriate to offer some thoughts on quantum mechanics to his memory.

Fizikai rendszerek összetett szimmetriái = Complex symmetries of physical systems

GÉZA LÉVAI

Eredményeim egyrészt megoldható kvantummechanikai potenciálfeladatok és azok szimmetriáinak vizsgálatával kapcsolatosak, másrészt pedig e módszertani eredmények konkrét atommagfizikai rendszerekre történő alkalmazását valósították meg. Az előbbi területen zárt alakban megadtam több egzaktul megoldható PT-szimmetrikus potenciál állapotainak pszeudo-normáját (ami a PT-szimmetrikus potenciálok hermitikus megfelelőinek előállítása szempontjából kulcsfontosságú), kiterjesztettem az egzaktul megoldható PT-szimmetrikus potenciálokat 2 és 3 térbeli dimenzióra és társszerzőimmel megnyugtatóan rendeztük a Coulomb-probléma PT-szimmetrizálásának régóta húzódó kérdését. Emellett javasoltam egy olyan eljárást, amellyel helyfüggő effektív tömeg esetén is egzaktul megoldható potenciálfeladatok generálhatók úgy, hogy a tömeg mindenhol véges és pozitív. Az alkalmazások területén atommagok alakfázisai közötti fázisátmenetek egzakt leírását adtam a hatodfokú oszcillátornak a Bohr-féle Hamilton-operátorban történö felhasználásával. Zárt alakban felírtam a fázisátmenet szempontjából lényeges állapotok hullámfüggvényét, energia-sajátértékeit és az állapotok közötti elektromágneses átmeneti valószínűségeket. A módszert alkalmaztam az E(5) kritikusponti szimmetriára jó példát mutató Ru, Pd és Cd izotópokra. Szintén tárgyaltam egy olyan szuperszimmetria-sémát, amelybe szomszédos könnyű atommagok alfa-klaszter állapotai sorolhatók. | My results concern the study of exactly solvable quantum mechanical potentials and their symmetries, as well as the application of these methodical results to nuclear physical systems. In the former field I presented in closed form the pseudo-norm for the states of several PT-symmetric potentials (a result essential in generating the Hermitian equivalents of PT-symmetric potentials), I extended exactly solvable PT-symmetric potentials to 2 and 3 spatial dimensions, and together with my co-authors settled the long lasting problem of the PT-symmetrization of the Coulomb problem. Besides these, I proposed a method by which exact solutions of position-dependent effective-mass problems can be generated such that the mass remains finite and positive everywhere. Concerning applications, I presented exact description of phase transitions between different nuclear shape phases by applying the sextic oscillator in the Bohr Hamiltonian. I gave closed expressions for the wavefunctions and energy eigenvalues of states essential from the point of view of the phase transition and also calculated electromagnetic transition probablilities between them. I applied the method to Ru, Pd and Cd isotopes that are considered to be good examples for the E(5) critical point symmetry. I also discussed a supersymmetry scheme that contains alpha cluster states of neighbouring light nuclei.

Megvizsgáltuk a gravitációs önkölcsönhatás megjelenésének lehetőségét egy nanomechanikai oszcillátor mérhető rezgési spektrumában [20]. \n3) Kvantum opto-mechanikai kísérletek elméleti háttere Rámutattunk a jelenleg több laborban fejlesztés alatt álló nano-tükrös kísérletek korlátaira, egyfelől a vártnál nagyobb (mikro-kelvines) hűtési elvárásra [6], másfelől a lézeres hűtést korlátozó fáziszajra [24]. \n4) Kvantuminformáció \nA Springer kiadónál tankönyvet jelentettünk meg [16]. Bevezettük az ú.n. kvantumkesztyű fogalmát a kiralitás "kvantum-gazdaságos" kódolására [1], ezt a kutatást a Nature és a Magyar Tudomány is szemlézte. | Our research led to publication of 13 refereed papers.
