1. Óriás spinű molekulák (nanomágnesek) állapotának időben változó mezővel való kölcsönhatásában megmutattuk, hogyan lehet ezeket egy kívánt spinállapotba hozni. A dekoherencia figyelembevételével magyarázatot adtunk a kísérleti hiszterézisgörbék alakjára és üregbe zárt nanomágnesek esetén a mézerszerű működésre. 2. 3. Megmutattuk, hogy N qubitből, illetve általánosabban K dimenziós részekből álló kvantumrendszer szimmetrikus alterében a nem összefonódott állapotok pontosan megegyeznek a koherens állapotokkal, és a szimmetrikus altérre ortogonális állapotok mindegyike összefonódott. | 1. We have shown how giant spin molecules (nanomagnets) can be brought into specific quantum states with time varying magnetic fields . We explained the experimentally observed hysteresis curves and a maser-like operation for molecules in a cavity as caused by decoherence. 2. We proposed how to realize one-qubit quantum gates based on the electron spin in a semiconductor ring. Applying one or few such rings the spintronic analogue of the Stern-Gerlach experiment can be realized, and the device can entangle the spatial and spin degrees of freedom. Increasing the size of networks consisting of such rings decoherence caused by impurities and by finite temperature reduces the ideal properties of the system, but the quantum features to be exploited diminish promisingly slow. A periodic change of the strength of the spin-orbit interaction leads to Rabi oscillations of the spin, which persists also at finite temperatures and in the presence of random scattering events. The oscillating spin-orbit interaction creates Raman type Stokes and anti-Stokes peaks in the conductivity. 3. In an N qubit system, or more generally in an N-partite system consisting of K dimensional parts, the class of nonentangled states in the symmetric subspace is identical with the class of the coherent states. The subspace orthogonal to the symmetric one contains only entangled states.

Kiterjesztettük a stimulált Raman adiabatikus átmenetet egy háromszintű, degenerált energianívójú atomra. Eljárásunkkal a teljes Hilbert-teret le lehet fedni a gerjesztő impulzusok paramétereinek változtatásával. Általánosítottuk a Pólya-féle számot kvantumos bolyongásokra. A hiperkockán történő keresést optimalizáltuk és a kvantumoptikai megvalósításnál fellépő zajt elemeztük. Javasoltuk az 1D kvantumbolyongás megvalósítását félvezető struktúrákban. Összefonódáson alapuló kvantumkommunikációs sémákat találtunk diszkrét és folytonos változós kvantumállapotok minimális klasszikus kommunikáció árán való távoli előállítására. Összefonódottság detektálására dolgoztunk ki új módszereket. Feles spinű részecskékből álló sokrészecskés rendszerekre megadtuk a kollektív mennyiségek mérésén alapuló összefonódottsági kritériumok teljes halmazát. Kis számú, egyenként is elérhető spinre is megadtunk optimális kritériumokat. | We extended the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage method to a degenerate three-level atom. Our scheme covers the full target Hilbert space by varying the exciting laser pulse parameters. We generalized the Pólya number for quantum walks. We optimized the search algorithm on a hypercube and analyzed the effect of noise in a quantum optical setting. We proposed the implementation of the 1D quantum walk in semiconductor structures. We found entanglement based quantum communication schemes that enable the remote preparation of a family of discrete and continuous variable quantum states at minimal classical communication cost. We developed new methods for detecting quantum entanglement. In systems with very many particles, where only collective quantities can be measured, we determined the full set of entanglement conditions for the case of spin-half particles. We also gave optimal criteria for a system of few, individually addressable spins. We developed new cooling schemes for the manipulation of motion of neutral atoms with far detuned laser fields, in which the hyperfine states carrying quantum bit information are not influenced. We considered various effects due to radiative atom-atom interaction in far detuned laser fields. We developed a procedure more efficient than other known numeric methods for calculating the time-evolution operator in open systems. We applied it for calculating the fidelity of a CNOT gate realized by atoms in a cavity.
Kiterjesztettük a STIRAP eljárást impulzusmomentum-állapotokból álló sokszintes degenerált kvantumrendszerekre, továbbá eljárást dolgoztunk ki állapotuk rekonstruálására. Alapvető kvantumkapu műveleteket implementáltunk a STIRAP módszer felhasználásával félvezető nanostruktúrákban. Disszipatív rendszerekben alkalmazható robusztus eljárást mutattunk be tetszőleges kevert állapot előállítására, mely kvantumbitek preparálására is használható. Numerikus optimalizációt végeztünk a végesen korrelált állapotok körében a végtelen, transzlációinvariáns spin-láncban a legközelebbi szomszéd összefonódottság maximumának meghatározására. | We have extended the STIRAP (Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage) method to degenerate systems consisting of angular momentum states. Moreover, we have developed a reconstruction scheme to retrieve their quantum state. We have applied our quantum state control schemes to nanostructures for implementing basic quantum logic gates. We have developed a robust method to prepare pure and mixed states in dissipative systems. We have developed efficient methods using the quantum trajectory approach for numerically determining two-time correlation functions and the time-evolution operator in open quantum systems. We have developed a method for efficient nonlinear frequency conversion in phase coherent media. We have proved that by logarithmic phase singularities, modeled in phase coherent media, at wave catastrophes the wave amplitude grows with a half-integer power. In a quasi one dimensional flow of Bose-Einstein condensed atoms the Hawking temperature is entirely determined by the curvature of the trapping potential. We have developed a method based on the STIRAP scheme for creating entangled states in compound systems. We have proposed a scheme to create entangled states in spin-chains. We have performed a numerical optimization to determine the maximum nearest neighbor entanglement in a translationally invariant infinite qubit chain based on finitely correlated states.
A magas spinű rendszerekben újfajta, egzotikus szuperfolyékony fázisok megjelenésére mutattunk rá mágnesesen polarizáció jelenlétében, és javaslatot tettünk annak kísérleti megfigyelhetőségére ultrahideg atomok rendszerében. A vezetési elektronok közötti korrelációkat is tartalmazó periodikus Anderson-Hubbard-modell esetén a Hubbard-fizika (Mott-átalakulás) és a Kondo-fizika (nehézfermionos viselkedés) versengésében határoztuk meg a kölcsönhatások szerepét. A Bethe-feltevéssel egzaktul megoldható rendszerekre analitikusan levezettük a szabadenergiához adódó vezető korrekciókat. | The physics of low-dimensional magnetic and fermionic systems is in the forefront of research in solid state physics. During the course of this project, we studied the physical properties of such systems both analytically and numerically, investing a lot of effort in the algorithmic development of the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method, using the concepts of quantum information theory. This allowed us, by combining DMRG with Wilson's numerical RG procedure, to extend the method to impurity problems. Following our research plan, we determined the phase diagram of various models, such as spin ladders, generalized Hubbard models and SU(n) symmetric models, and studied the quantum phase transitions in these systems. We have pointed out the possibility of exotic superfluid phases in magnetically polarized high-spin systems, and proposed experiments for their observation in ultracold atomic gases. We have studied the competition of Hubbard physics (Mott transition) and Kondo physics (heavy-fermion behavior) in extended periodic Anderson-Hubbard models, where correlations between conduction electrons and the interaction between conduction and localized electrons are taken into account. We have also determined the leading corrections to the free energy of exactly integrable systems.
| During the course of the project I first investigated the interaction of partially overlapping laser pulses with atoms for the acceleration of an atomic ensemble, or the manipulation of their internal state. I have shown how such manipulation schemes work even if the interaction persists for much longer than the spontaneous lifetime of the atoms. I have also shown that these schemes are very useful when manipulating atoms with complex level structures, i.e. several close lying hyperfine states with rotationally degenerate substates, and the initial state of the atoms is some random mixture of such rotational state sublevels. Furthermore, it is possible to conceive schemes using just two overlapping laser pulses which allow the entanglement of the rotational substates with discrete center-of-mass momentum states. During the second phase of the project I investigated the interaction of a pair of overlapping pulses with rare-earth ions in a host crystal where vibrational motion of the ions is coupled to electronic excitation. I have also considered nonlinear pulse propagation phenomena in an inhomogeneously broadened medium of such ions, e.g. the generation various Raman sidebands.
Munkánk elvezetett a rezonátoros kvantumelektrodinamika alapmodelljének több irányú kiterjesztéséhez, és más aktív kutatási területhez kapcsolásához. Az erős atom-fény csatolást bevezettük a Bose-Einstein kondenzátumok fizikájába. Először átlagtérelmélettel és lineáris zajanalízissel felderítettük a csatolt anyag-, és fényhullámok hibrid rendszerét. Kifejlesztettünk effektív modelleket, amelyek számot adnak a kvantumstatisztikai tulajdonságokról, sőt, még dinamikai jelenségekről is. A térbeli önszerveződés nemegyensúlyi fázisátalakítását elemeztük részletesen. At ETH csoportjában végzett kísérletek igazolták néhány jóslatunkat. A szórási megközelítés sikeresnek bizonyult szabad térben megfigyelhető, kollektív atomi jelenségek feltárásában is. Rev. Lett. van. 7 meghívott konferenciaelőadást tartottunk. | This project has led to the extension of the basic cavity QED model in various directions, connecting it to other very active research fields. First of all, the strong atom-field coupling has been incorporated to the physics of Bose-Einstein condensates. The composite, hybrid system of coupled matter and light waves was explored, first, by mean field theory and linearized fluctuation analysis. We developed effective models accounting for quantum statistical features, too, even for dynamical effects. The non-equilibrium phase transition of spatial self-organization was analysed in detail. Experimental observations in the ETH group verified some of our predictions. We established a link between cavity QED and the standard opto-mechanical model. This latter is a hot topic with the promise of observing quantum effects in the kinematics of massive, mesoscopic mirrors. We described them in a uniform framework, as being the two extremes of the same scattering model. This scattering approach proved to be useful also in studying collective atomic effects in free space. We went beyond the standard picture of optical lattices: we found corrections to the optical dipole potential due to back-action on the field and showed that many-body excitations in the form of density waves can be excited in an optical lattice. We published altogether 21 papers, among which there are 6 Phys.Rev. Letters. We presented 7 invited conference talks.
Zérus hőmérsékletű csapdázott atomokra vizsgáltuk a részecskék kollektív gerjesztéseinek spektrumát a hidrodinamikai közelítésben. Numerikus eljárást adtunk tetszőleges kollektív gerjesztés meghatározására, amennyiben a gáz állapotegyenlete valamilyen mikroszkopikus modellből ismert. A módszerrel a hidrodinamikai közelítés módusai numerikusan egzaktul számolhatók. Meghatároztuk a csapdázott szuperfolyékony gáz kollektív gerjesztéseinek spektrumát a BCS határesettől a BEC határesetig a Feshbach-rezonancia tartományán is keresztülhaladva a lokális sűrűség modell alapján. Csapdázott, feles spinű rendszerek esetén a szuperfolyékony rendszer lokális sűrűség közelítését továbbfejlesztettük a sűrűség deriváltjait tartalmazó tagok kiszámításával és a bővített egyenletek megoldásával. A fellépő teljes elliptikus integrálok kezelésére kidolgozott analitikus és numerikus módszereink segített a Rashba-billiárdok állapotsűrűségének és szintstatisztikájának a vizsgálatában. | In the one open-shell model for fermions we have calculated both analytically and numerically the structure of the ground state. If s denotes the spin of the fermions we have found that the ground state consists of clusters of (2s+1) particles at particles numbers of integer multiples of (2s+1). At zero temperature we have investigated the spectra of collective excitations using hydrodynamical approach to the problem. We gave a numerical method for determining arbitrary excitations, provided the equation of state of the atom-gas in question is known from some microscopic model. By the method the modes in the hydrodynamical approach can be calculated in a numerically exact way. We have calculated the collective excitations of a trapped superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC transition through the Feshbach resonance using the mean-field BCS model. We have improved the local density approximation for trapped fermions with spin one-half by including the gradient corrections in the self-consistent equations for the gap and the density. The method how we have treated the complete elliptic integrals in the previous problem helped us to calculate the density of states up to third order corrections and unfold the spectra for the nearest neighbor level-spacing distribution of Rashba-billiards.
