Population transfer and coherence in the adiabatic limit by counterintuitive and intuitive pulse sequences

Abstract

Two approaches of achieving population transfer and coherence are investigated for the three-level Λ system in the adiabatic limit. The effects of the laser pulse sequence on the population transfer efficiency and coherence are studied. Coherent control of quantum state and population is studied by numerical simulation based on self-consistent set of density matrix equations. It can be seen that the counterintuitive pulse sequence is more efficient in population transfer and coherence than the intuitive one.

On Laser-induced Population Transfer

This paper reviews some basic techniques and theories for laser-induced incoherent population transfer schemes and resonant coherent excitation. By numerical simulations based on self-consistent set of density matrix equations and Maxwell equations, the authors have found this control can be achievable with great robustness and efficiency in nanosecond time scale using two pulses with proper selection of sequence timing to prepare the state for coherence superposition and population transfer with effective suppression of spontaneous emission.

Several methods of population transfer and comparisons of them

Chen Shou-chuan

It introduced several methods to transfer population, including two-level system and three-level system, and gave some comparisons on transfer efficiency and transfer velocity of them in theory. It is shown that population transfer by coherent pulse sequence is better than incoherence one. Numerical simulation results showed that when using Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Rapid Passage (STIRAP), in which the pump laser pulse fully overlaps the Stokes pulse with the Stokes preceding the pump, population can be transferred completely and rapidly. Robust control of population transfer among Zeeman sublevels in the ground states of three-level system is investigated using adiabatic rapid passage in theory. The laser pulse widths are supposed to be short compared to the lifetime of the excited level, which means adiabatic. We demonstrated that techniques of STIRAP can be found to optimize population transfer in the ground states of three-level Λ system.

Coherent population transfer in three-level Λ systems by chirped laser pulses: Minimization of the intermediate-level population

Ignacio R. Solá, Vladimir S. Malinovsky, Bo Y. Chang +2 more

Adiabatic passage induced by chirped laser pulses in three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ systems is investigated. Two different strategies for efficient population transfer (equal and opposite sign of the chirp) are analyzed. The role of detuning, crucial for the attempt to reduce the population of the intermediate state, is demonstrated. The scheme of adiabatic passage by laser pulses with chirps of different sign is not symmetric with respect to the sign of the one-photon detuning. Blue detuning results in a smaller transient population of the intermediate state than does red detuning. The results are explained on the basis of dressed states. Numerical results for a fully off-resonant adiabatic passage scheme, based on two pulses with the same sign of the chirps, are also considered. The robustness of the schemes in terms of the Rabi frequency, chirp rate, detuning, and time delay of the pulses is explored.

Optimal Control of Population Transfer in Three-Level System with Genetic Algorithms

Xiangyun Zhang, Zhenrong Sun, Guoliang Chen +3 more

Population transfer in a three-level Λ system is simulated numerically and optimized. Almost complete population transfer from |1⟩ to |3⟩ is achieved by a genetic algorithm while the population in state |2⟩ reached minimum over the entire evolution at the same time. The result shows that the optimal pulse sequence is the well-known stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) scheme. The detuning of pump pulse and Stokes pulse Δ p and Δ s with the opposite sign and the chirps χ p and χ s with the same sign are in favour of the complete and robust population transfer for few-cycle laser pulse. Rabi frequencies Ω p and Ω s have insensitive effects on the complete population transfer during a large scope of their ratio when they are large enough.

Coherence generation and population transfer in a three-level ladder system

Bing Zhang, Yun Jiang, Gang Wang +3 more

This work explores the effect of spontaneous emission on coherence generation and population transfer in a three-level ladder atomic system driven by two pulses in counterintuitive order. With adiabatic evolution and the weak-dephasing approximation, we find that a large coherence and population transfer can be achieved even with spontaneous decay rate. The maximum coherence and population transfer decrease with the increase of spontaneous decay rate from the highest state to intermediate state. But this effect can be compensated by shortening the pulse width and enlarging the delay time. Results show that the coherence generation and population transfer never depend on the spontaneous decay rate from the intermediate state to ground state. The validity of the analytic solution is examined by numerical calculation.

Robust control of atomic coherence and population transfer among Zeeman sublevel s in the ground states of atom is investigated theoretically using adiabatic rap id passage on a nanosecond time scale. It is shown that a slight change in the p ump pulse time delay relative to the Stokes pulse leads to a significant modific ation of atomic coherence and population transfer. This coherence control of qua ntum state and population is presented by numerical simulations based on self-co nsistent set of density matrix equations and Maxwell equations.
