Abstract

The necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of adiabatic states in three-level quantum systems are investigated analytically and numerically. Various possible configurations of three-level systems under exact two-photon resonance are considered. It is shown that in all these schemes, the lifetime of the studied states is determined by the dephasing time between levels that are not connected by a dipole transition. An efficient population transfer through the b-state at room temperature is demonstrated despite relatively long relaxation times. It is also demonstrated that, in case of large one-photon detuning, the so-called b-state has the same lifetime as that of the dark state. The evolution of adiabatic states for arbitrary values of single-photon detunings has been studied numerically.

Adiabatic States and Suppression of Dissipative Processes

E. A. Gazazyan, G. G. Grigoryan

Abstract We consider adiabatic interaction of quantum systems with electromagnetic field in the presence of various dissipation processes. As it is known that in the presence of large intermediate detunings any n-level system can be reduced to an effective two-level system, we chose the two-level model as the basic model for a detailed analytical study. We demonstrate the possibility of reducing losses due to dephasing and non-adiabatic corrections by choosing an appropriate design of time-dependent interaction parameters. Simple analytical expressions are derived for both cold and hot atomic ensembles. The results obtained for the two-level system are applied to a three-level system by using the method of adiabatic elimination. Efficient population transfer is shown despite the relatively high dephasing rates.

Automated and robust population transfer method for three-level system using oscillating dark states

Jun He, Yong-Sheng Zhang, Xiang-Fa Zhou +2 more

An automated and robust method for adiabatic population transfer and the preparation of an arbitrary quantum superposition state in atomic system using the oscillating dark states (ODS) is presented. Quantum state of a three-level $Λ$ configuration atomic system oscillates periodically between two ground levels, when two pairs of classical detuning laser fields driving the system into the ODS under evolving adiabatic conditions. The decoherence of the ODS evolution is greatly suppressed, and the oscillation is very stable, therefore adiabatic population transfer and the preparation of an arbitrary quantum superposition state of atomic system can be completed accurately and conveniently.

Influence of multiphoton detunings from resonance on adiabatic processes in a five-level system

E. A. Gazazyan, G. G. Grigoryan

The Schrödinger equation for a five-level system has been analyzed numerically for different values of multiphoton detuning from exact resonances. The range of admissible deviations for which the effect of multiphoton detunings on the eigenstate of the interaction Hamiltonian imitating a three-level system is insignificant has been determined. The effective population transfer and the possibility of double storage of optical information have been demonstrated.

Analytic model of a three-state system driven by two laser pulses on two-photon resonance

Nikolay V. Vitanov

This paper presents an analytic study of the properties of a three-state system coupled to two external laser fields on two-photon resonance. The intermediate state is generally off single-photon resonance and can decay irreversibly out of the system. The two fields are assumed to have the same pulse-shaped time dependence but may have different strengths. Various general properties for arbitrary pulse shapes, detunings and decay rates are derived and illustrated with an exactly solvable analytic model. They include the conditions for complete population transfer and depletion, complete population loss or no loss, various limitations on the values of the populations, the effect of overdamping at large decay rates and others.

Coherent Population Transfer among Three States: Full Algebraic Solutions and the Relevance of Non Adiabatic Processes to Transfer by Delayed Pulses

Matthew Fewell, Bruce W. Shore, Klaas Bergmann

Ongoing work aimed at developing highly efficient methods of populating a chosen sublevel of an energy level highlights the need to understand off-resonant effects in coherent excitation. This motivated us to re-examine some aspects of the theory of coherent excitation in a three-state system with a view to obtaining algebraic expressions for off-resonant eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Earlier work gives simple closed-form expressions for the eigenvalues this system, expressions applying even when the system is not on two-photon resonance. We present here expressions of similar simplicity for the components of the normalised eigenvectors. The analytic properties of these components explain the observed sensitivity of the stimulated-Raman-adiabatic-passage process (STIRAP) to the condition of two-photon resonance. None of the eigenstates is ‘trapped’ or ‘dark’ unless the system is on two-photon resonance; off resonance, all states have nonzero projections on the unperturbed intermediate state. A simple argument shows that no dressed state can be adiabatically connected to both the unperturbed initial and final states when the system is off two-photon resonance. That is, adiabatic transfer from initial to final state requires that these be degenerate before and after the STIRAP pulse sequence, and this implies zero two-photon detuning. However, substantial transfer probabilities are observed experimentally for very small two-photon detunings. We show that such systems are characterised by very sharp avoided crossings of two eigenvalues, and that the observed population transfer can be understood as an effect of non adiabatic transitions occurring at the avoided crossings.

Adiabatic transfer of population in five-level system in the absence of four-photon resonance

O. Tikhova

The influence of the nonzero four-photon detuning on the adiabatic transfer of population in five-level system has been studied both analytically and numerically. The estimations determining the permissible variation of the four-photon detuning have been obtained, which are well confirmed by numerical calculations.
