Coherence generation and population transfer in a three-level ladder system

Abstract

This work explores the effect of spontaneous emission on coherence generation and population transfer in a three-level ladder atomic system driven by two pulses in counterintuitive order. With adiabatic evolution and the weak-dephasing approximation, we find that a large coherence and population transfer can be achieved even with spontaneous decay rate. The maximum coherence and population transfer decrease with the increase of spontaneous decay rate from the highest state to intermediate state. But this effect can be compensated by shortening the pulse width and enlarging the delay time. Results show that the coherence generation and population transfer never depend on the spontaneous decay rate from the intermediate state to ground state. The validity of the analytic solution is examined by numerical calculation.

Coherence generation and population transfer by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage and π pulse in a four-level ladder system

Bing Zhang, Jin‐Hui Wu, Yan Xi-zhang +3 more

We propose a new scheme for achieving the complete population transfer and the optimal coherence generation between the ground state and the Rydberg state in a four-level ladder system by combining the STIRAP or fractional STIRAP technique and the π pulse technique. We consider, in particular, two different situations where spontaneous emission from the two highest states are neglected or not. Our numerical calculations show that the time width and the delay time of the π pulse are two critical parameters for attaining the maximal population transfer and coherence generation in this scheme.

Control of coherent population transfer via spontaneous decay-induced coherence

Xihua Yang, Shi-Yao Zhu

We investigate the effect of the spontaneous decay-induced coherence on the control of coherent population transfer in a closed double $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type four-level system with the energy separation of the excited doublet comparable to their decay rates by using the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage technique. It is shown that when the two pulse laser fields are tuned to the particular frequency where the condition for quantum interference is satisfied, remarkable enhancement or suppression of population transfer can be realized through the spontaneous emission constructive or destructive quantum interference even with a finite pulse area, which is very favorable to coherent population transfer in quantum systems with weak oscillator strengths.

Efficient population transfer in a three-level ladder system by frequency-swept ultrashort laser pulses

Bernard Broers, H. B. van Linden van den Heuvell, Lambertus D. Noordam

Enhanced population transfer from the lowest to the highest level in the three-state ladder 5s\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5d of the rubidium atom by frequency-swept ultrashort laser pulses is observed if the frequency sweep first makes the pulse resonant with the 5s\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5p transition, and later with the 5p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5d transition. With this ``intuitive'' scheme it is possible to achive complete population inversion via the intermediate level by two successive adiabatic passages. Complete inversion is also obtained by a ``counterintuitive'' direction of the frequency sweep, in which case population of the intermediate level during the pulse is strongly reduced.

Numerical exploration of coherent excitation in three-level systems

H. A. Camp, M. H. Shah, M. L. Trachy +2 more

A great deal of effort has been applied to understanding population dynamics within a variety of coherent excitation schemes. The goal in such studies has been to understand the conditions necessary for efficient transfer of population from one state to another. While many theoretical treatments include the effects of natural lifetimes that are present in any given system, some neglect this important aspect when considering specific cases. Adiabatic approximations are also widely made. Additionally, it is often difficult to envision how the different parameters controlling efficient population transfer are interrelated or even which parameters are the most critical, especially when the decay lifetimes are taken into account. This work describes a numerical study of coherent excitation applied to a $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ ladder system where spontaneous decay rates are included, and adiabaticity is not assumed. A useful method is introduced to explore the interdependence of various excitation parameters. The efficiency of population transfer as a function of several experimentally controllable parameters is explored, and other general trends are summarized.

Population transfer and coherence in the adiabatic limit by counterintuitive and intuitive pulse sequences

Zhou Yan-Wei, Ye Cun-Yun

Two approaches of achieving population transfer and coherence are investigated for the three-level Λ system in the adiabatic limit. The effects of the laser pulse sequence on the population transfer efficiency and coherence are studied. Coherent control of quantum state and population is studied by numerical simulation based on self-consistent set of density matrix equations. It can be seen that the counterintuitive pulse sequence is more efficient in population transfer and coherence than the intuitive one.

Coherent Population Trapping of a Three-level Atom Interacting with Few Cycle Pulse Train

蔡勋明 CAI Xun-minga, 范梦慧 FAN Meng-huib

The poulation transfer and coherent population trapping of a three-level atom interacting with few cycle pulse train are studied. The density matrix equation in interation picture is numerical solved without rotating wave approximation. The research indicates that if a three-level atom interacts with a few cycle pulse train, the population transfer of level and the coherence of ground state will be gradual accumulated. When the repetition frequency of pulses is integer points of the ground-state splitting, the three atom interacts with pulse train can be seen as the atom interacts with two tenoning frequency of the frequency comb.So the system will be in the dark state and reach coherent population trapping. If the parameters of few-cycle pulse are appropriately selected, the coherence of three-level system will evolute into stable value in 0.5 nanosecond. The coherent population trapping in the three-level is generated.Comparing with the pulse that the pulse width is 100 femtoseconds, the build-up time of coherent population trapping by few cycle pulse train is shortened two orders of magnitude. When the ground-state splitting is wided enough and the carrier frequency of pulse is ω=(ω1+ω2)/2,where,are the atomic transition frequency, the doppler frequency shift that is aroused by the movement of atom won't destroy the coherent population trapping of atom. The reason is that all tenoning frequencies of the frequency comb have the same frequency shift,so the condition of coherent population trapping is still meeted.
