Abstract

We present a self-contained analytical model for biphoton generation in microring resonators. Encompassing both all-pass and add-drop geometries, identical and distinct pump and biphoton coupling coefficients, and continuous-wave and pulsed pumping, our interaction-picture-based approach reveals time-frequency biphoton correlations while also predicting absolute generation rates. Under continuous-wave excitation, we find critical coupling of both the pump and biphoton to maximize the rate of single photons extracted from the microring, whereas critical coupling of the pump but overcoupling of the biphoton maximize the two-photon rate. Under pulsed pumping, overcoupling of both pump and biphoton (to different degrees) maximizes photon extraction probabilities, albeit under a tradeoff with spectral factorability that we quantify via parameter scans over a range of coupler pairings. As a whole, our formalism should prove valuable for the practical design of integrated photon sources, merging a flexible and intuitive biphoton-centric depiction with quantitative predictions closely tied to experimental parameters.

Generation rate scaling: the quality factor optimization of microring resonators for photon-pair sources

Kai Guo, Xiaodong Shi, Xiaolin Wang +4 more

To achieve photon-pair generation scaling, we optimize the quality factor of microring resonators for efficient continuous-wave-pumped spontaneous four-wave mixing. Numerical studies indicate that a high intrinsic quality factor makes high pair rate and pair brightness possible, in which the maximums take place under overcoupling and critical-coupling conditions, respectively. We fabricate six all-pass-type microring resonator samples on a silicon-on-insulator chip involving gap width as the only degree of freedom. The signal count rate, pair brightness, and coincidence rate of all the samples are characterized, which are then compared with the modified simulations by taking the detector saturation and nonlinear loss into account. Being experimentally validated for the first time to the best of our knowledge, this work explicitly demonstrates that reducing the round-trip loss in a ring cavity and designing the corresponding optimized gap width are more effective to generate high-rate or high-brightness photon pairs than the conventional strategy of simply increasing the quality factor. Studying frequency correlations of photon pairs generated via spontaneous four–wave mixing in a microring resonator

Ilya Chuprina, А. А. Калачев

Spontaneous four–wave mixing (SFWM) in a microring resonator is considered theoretically. The joint spectral amplitude and Schmidt number of generated biphoton field are calculated numerically for different pump pulses. Optimal pulse shapes that provide maximum efficiency of SFWM and minimum frequency correlations between signal and idler photons are found.

Spontaneous four-wave mixing in microring resonators

We consider spontaneous four-wave mixing in a microring resonator, presenting photon-pair generation rates and biphoton wave functions. We show how generation rates can be simply predicted from the performance of the device in the classical regime and that a wide variety of biphoton wave functions can be achieved by varying the pump pulse duration.

Strongly driven nonlinear quantum optics in microring resonators

Z. Vernon, John E. Sipe

We present a detailed analysis of strongly driven spontaneous four-wave mixing in a lossy integrated microring resonator side coupled to a channel waveguide. A nonperturbative, analytic solution within the undepleted pump approximation is developed for a cw pump input of arbitrary intensity. In the strongly driven regime self- and cross-phase modulation, as well as multipair generation, lead to a rich variety of power-dependent effects; the results are markedly different than in the low-power limit. The photon-pair generation rate, single-photon spectrum, and joint spectral intensity (JSI) distribution are calculated. Splitting of the generated single-photon spectrum into a doublet structure associated with both pump detuning and cross-phase modulation is predicted, as well as substantial narrowing of the generated signal and idler bandwidths associated with the onset of optical parametric oscillation at intermediate powers. Both the correlated and the uncorrelated contributions to the JSI are calculated, and for sufficient powers the uncorrelated part of the JSI is found to form a quadruplet structure. The pump detuning is found to play a crucial role in all of these phenomena, and a critical detuning is identified which divides the system behavior into distinct regimes, as well as an optimal detuning strategy which preserves many of the low-power characteristics of the generated photons for arbitrary input power.

Generating pure single-photon states via spontaneous four-wave mixing in a system of coupled microresonators

Ilya Chuprina, Nikolay Sergeevich Perminov, D. Yu. Tarankova +1 more

Abstract We present the optimal design for an on-chip single-photon source based on spontaneous four-wave mixing in a system of coupled ring microresonators, which provides the frequency-uncorrelated joint spectral amplitude of the biphoton field and thereby the generation of pure single-photon heralded states. A simple method is proposed for suppressing negative dispersion effects by optimizing the controlled spectroscopic parameters of the system. It shown that the optimal coupling parameters, in combination with the optimal spectral width of the pump pulse, give rise to the highest purity of the heralded photons for a given pump linewidth.
