Abstract

Abstract We present the optimal design for an on-chip single-photon source based on spontaneous four-wave mixing in a system of coupled ring microresonators, which provides the frequency-uncorrelated joint spectral amplitude of the biphoton field and thereby the generation of pure single-photon heralded states. A simple method is proposed for suppressing negative dispersion effects by optimizing the controlled spectroscopic parameters of the system. It shown that the optimal coupling parameters, in combination with the optimal spectral width of the pump pulse, give rise to the highest purity of the heralded photons for a given pump linewidth.

Spectrally pure heralded single photons by spontaneous four-wave mixing in a fiber: reducing impact of dispersion fluctuations

Jacob G. Koefoed, Søren M. M. Friis, Jesper B. Christensen +1 more

We model the spectral quantum-mechanical purity of heralded single photons from a photon-pair source based on nondegenerate spontaneous four-wave mixing taking the impact of distributed dispersion fluctuations into account. The considered photon-pair-generation scheme utilizes pump-pulse walk-off to produce pure heralded photons and phase matching is achieved through the dispersion properties of distinct spatial modes in a few-mode silica step-index fiber. We show that fiber-core-radius fluctuations in general severely impact the single-photon purity. Furthermore, by optimizing the fiber design we show that generation of single photons with very high spectral purity is feasible even in the presence of large core-radius fluctuations. At the same time, contamination from spontaneous Raman scattering is greatly mitigated by separating the single-photon frequency by more than 32 THz from the pump frequency.

Optimizing the dispersion properties of a ring microresonator

Ilya Chuprina, А. А. Калачев

The work is devoted to the problem of developing integrated single-photon sources based on spontaneous four-wave mixing in ring microresonators. Considering the silicon nitride microresonator as an example, we calculate the group velocity dispersion in a wide wavelength range for the case when the ring resonator is composed of straight and curved sections, and show that for different pump wavelengths it is possible to find an optimal ratio of the height and width of the waveguide, thereby achieving zero group velocity dispersion at a minimum height. Such waveguides, which provide zero dispersion and have a minimum height, are optimal for creating ring microresonators that generate single-photon states via non-degenerate spontaneous four-wave mixing.

Generating frequency-bin qubits via spontaneous four-wave mixing in a photonic molecule

Ilya Chuprina, А. А. Калачев

A scheme for heralded generation of frequency-bin photonic qubits via spontaneous four-wave mixing in a system of coupled microring resonators (a photonic molecule) is developed so that the qubit state is fully controlled by the frequency amplitude of the pump field. It is shown that coupling parameters of the photonic molecule can be optimized to provide generation of nearly pure heralded photons. The heralded qubit state does not depend on the microring resonator mode frequency, thereby allowing one to take advantage of frequency multiplexing for improving efficiency of quantum information processing.

Twin-photon generation in a silicon nitride microresonator

Franz Pacher, Haochen Yan, Alekhya Ghosh +8 more

Photonic chips with silicon nitride ($\mathrm{Si_3N_4}$) microring resonators are well established as heralded single-photon sources, but their operation as frequency-degenerate twin-photon sources has not previously been demonstrated. Here, we realise a twin-photon source at telecommunication wavelengths in a $\mathrm{Si_3N_4}$ ring microresonator via an inverse four-wave mixing (FWM) process, in which two photons from spectrally distinct pumps are converted into a pair of identical twin photons. The measurements show a maximum coincidence-to-accidental ratio (CAR) of $5.4\pm0.6$. In addition, the microresonator functions as a heralded single-photon source through pump-degenerate spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM), exhibiting a spectral purity of $P=0.67\pm0.05$ and a heralded anti-bunching of $g^{(2)}_h(0)=0.0042\pm0.0015$. Together, these results demonstrate both photon-generation schemes on a single integrated $\mathrm{Si_3N_4}$ platform, highlighting its potential for scalable, tailored quantum light generation.
