Abstract

We theoretically and experimentally study the effect of the coupled-resonator-induced transparency in the Michelson interferometer with the dual-recycled configuration, which is equivalent to the adjustable coupled resonator. The coupling strength, corresponding to the splitting of the reflection spectrum and associated with the width of the coupled-resonator-induced transparent window, can be controlled by adjusting the arm lengths, i.e., the relative phase of the interference arms on the $50:50$ beam splitter. Thus, this tunability of the coupling strength can be very fast, and the absorptive and dispersive properties can be effectively controlled. This work provides an alternative system for coherent control and storage of an optical field.

Phase-sensitive manipulation of squeezed vacuum via a dual-recycled Michelson interferometer

Wei Li, Yaohua Peng, Xudong Yu +2 more

The injection of squeezed vacuum state is an indispensable technology for the next generation gravitational wave observatory, which will open up a much larger window to the universe. After analyzing the absorption and dispersion properties of the reflected field of the dual-recycled Michelson interferometer (DRMI), we propose the phase-sensitive manipulation scheme of squeezed vacuum by utilizing the coupled-resonator-induced transparency in a dual-recycled Michelson interferometer (DRMI). In this way, the rotation frequency of squeezing ellipse can be finely tuned by the coupling strength, which overcome the limitation of the current solution (with a fixed rotation frequency) that employs a Fabry-Perot optical cavity as phase-sensitive manipulation element. This work will unleash the potential applications for quantum metrology beyond the shot noise limit.

Broadband sensitivity enhancement of detuned dual-recycled Michelson interferometers with EPR entanglement

Daniel Brown, Haixing Miao, Chris Collins +3 more

We demonstrate the applicability of the EPR entanglement squeezing scheme for enhancing the shot-noise-limited sensitivity of detuned dual-recycled Michelson interferometers. In particular, this scheme is applied to the GEO600 interferometer. The effect of losses throughout the interferometer, arm length asymmetries, and imperfect separation of the signal and idler beams is considered.

Electromagnetically induced transparency-based gas detector design using Michelson interferometer

Karim Abbasian, Mohammad Hossein Abdollahi

In this paper, we have designed an all-optical controllable gas detector by doping 3-level Λ type nanocrystals in the moving arms' mirror of Michelson interferometer and used electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon to change its refractive index. By this means, we have created a controllable phase difference between light beams in two arms of the Michelson interferometer, where reflection phase of the EIT-based mirror changes about π radiant. Also, the signal reflection from EIT-based mirror changes between 0% and 100% approximately, while the second arm's signal is reflected completely. This EIT-based mirror's refractive index change can be a good alternative for conventional Michelson interferometer-based gas detector with one mechanical moving arm mirror (Undergraduate Instrumental Analysis, 6th edn. Marcel Dekker, New York, 2005), where long response time and unfix moving speed were its main drawbacks. While, in this scheme, not only these disadvantages are removed but also the response time can reach the electron transient time between the atomic energy levels. Then, by this all-optical tunable gas detector, we have achieved many modifications such as response time in sub-nanoseconds, high resolution, and high accuracy, or less cross sensitivity to other gas species.

Electromagnetically induced-transparency-like spectrum in an add/drop interferometer

Kaiyang Wang, Changqiu Yu, Xuenan Zhang +3 more

We propose a single-ring-resonator-based add/drop interferometer and theoretically investigate the transmission characteristics. Due to coherent interference of two resonant pathways, an electromagnetically induced-transparency (EIT)-like spectrum is produced and the line shapes of the transmission spectra are tunable by controlling the coupling coefficients between the waveguide and ring resonator. We observe the EIT-like behavior in a fiber system which agrees well with the theoretical analysis. The proposed configuration has potential applications in tunable delay lines.

A Michelson Interferometer for Relative Phase Locking of Optical Beams

Guowei Li, Sheng-Jhe Huang, Hsu-Sheng Wu +4 more

A Michelson-type interferometer is built to dynamically lock the optical phase difference between the two-arm laser beams. The phase difference is tunable and allowed for continuous adjustments nearly by 160°. Under the best locking condition, a relative phase stability better than 0.1° is achieved starting from the original phase jitter of 10 to 15°. The interferometer is made by simply adding a pair of Brewster windows in one arm of the conventional setup, yet it provides much robust phase locking. It is readily applicable for optical lattice construction and nondestructive phase contrast imaging of ultracold atoms.

Proposal to Produce Coupled Resonator-Induced Transparency and Bistability Using Microresonator Enhanced Mach–Zehnder Interferometer

Ying Lu, Lijuan Xu, Meiling Shu +2 more

We propose a microresonator scheme for a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in which a microresonator is side coupled to one arm and the other is inserted in the other arm, to produce coupled resonator-induced transparency (CRIT) and absorption (CRIA) effects. In this system, CRIT and CRIA effects with one effect next to another over a frequency range when two microresonators are identical and Fano-resonance line shape when the sizes of two microresonators are unequal are achieved. We also theoretically investigate the improving optical bistability characteristic based on CRIT.
