Abstract

We propose a single-ring-resonator-based add/drop interferometer and theoretically investigate the transmission characteristics. Due to coherent interference of two resonant pathways, an electromagnetically induced-transparency (EIT)-like spectrum is produced and the line shapes of the transmission spectra are tunable by controlling the coupling coefficients between the waveguide and ring resonator. We observe the EIT-like behavior in a fiber system which agrees well with the theoretical analysis. The proposed configuration has potential applications in tunable delay lines.

Observation of EIT-like spectrum in the eye-like ring resonator

Kai Ma, Yundong Zhang, Yongfeng Wu +3 more

We theoretically analyze the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like spectrum in the Eye-like resonator configuration. The EIT-like spectrum results from the interference between the inner ring and the outer ring. In this paper, we obtain a tunable group delay and bandwidth of the transparency window through changing the coupling coefficients and the attenuation factors of the inner and the outer ring. The tunable group delay and the bandwidth will have potential application in optical switching or tunable delay lines and tunable bandwidth filter.

Observation of EIT like spectrum in the nested fiber ring resonator

Yundong Zhang, Changqiu Yu, Kaiyang Wang +1 more

We demonstrate the electromagnetically induced transparency like spectrum in the nested fiber ring resonator with the transfer matrix theory; the system consists of two rings and two waveguides which are connected by four couplers. The simulation results show that the tunable group delay can be realized by changing the coupling coefficients. At transmission window, the transmittance can achieve approximately 97.2% with the 0.05ns group delay. Through tuning the coupling coefficients, the group delay can vary from 0.05ns to -21.23ns and the bandwidth of the transparency window can vary from 37MHz to 15MHz.The ability for realizing such transparency resonance and for controlling the group delay or the bandwidth of such resonance is important for applications such as optical switching, as well as tunable bandwidth filter applications.

Tunable Fano and EIT-Like Resonances in a Nested Feedback Ring Resonator

Kai Ma, Yundong Zhang, Huaiyin Su +3 more

In this paper, we realize tunable Fano and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like resonances in the outputs of a nested feedback ring resonator. Compared with the traditional add-drop ring resonator, the feedback arm introduces interference between different resonance modes. Using coupled mode theory, we reveal that the output Fano resonances are the interference of discrete modes and continuum modes, whereas the EIT-like resonance only appears in the over-coupled state. We experimentally confirm the two effects using optical fiber ring resonators, finding that the Fano effect can be easily controlled with phase shifts in the feedback arm. Moreover, we achieve the double Fano resonance, which displays an ‘X’ type lineshape utilizing one ring resonator, predicting it to be a good candidate in wavelength monitor. The proposed simple configuration provides a platform to study Fano and EIT-like effect, which is useful in the optical filter, fast and slow light, optical switching, and optical sensing.

Comparative Analysis of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) in Various Ring Resonator Configurations

Charmaine C. Paglinawan, Arnold C. Paglinawan, Benjamin B. Dingel +1 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is a phenomenon where a narrow transparency window appears within an absorption band of a material due to quantum interference. This effect has significant applications in various fields, including slow light devices, optical filters, and sensors. This paper compares three prominent EIT implementation resonator structures: single direct-coupled, double coupler add-drop, standard double resonator (SDR), coupled ring reflector (CRR) and self-coupled optical waveguide (SCOW). We analyze their underlying mechanisms, performance characteristics, and suitability for different applications, supported by recent research from 2020 onwards. We also present simulated transmission spectra, using Lumerical Interconnect, for each configuration to visually illustrate their distinct features.

Investigation of the characteristics of the electromagnetic induction transparent-like spectrum with counter-propagating waves coupling mechanism for waveguide and micro-ring coupled system

Chao Zhao

In this paper, a new counter-propagation waves coupling mechanism is proposed which is expected to realize an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like effect. Comparing the travelling waves coupling mechanism (see J. Mod. Opt. 2015,62:313-320 [9]) with the counter-propagating waves coupling mechanism, we find out that the transparency window breadths of transmission spectra are greatly enhanced and the corresponding phase shift spectra possess a flat profile or a square profile. Our numerical simulated results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. The EIT-like effect can significantly reduce the group velocity near the edge of the square profile transparent window. We believe that the counter-propagating waves coupling mechanism is particularly beneficial for the realization of active manipulation of slow light devices (such as delay lines) required in the conventional EIT scheme. In the vicinity of the transparency peak, we can obtain a large group delay, may gain more significant potential applications in slow-light transmission and optical storage.

Coupled resonator-induced transparency in ring-bus-ring Mach-Zehnder interferometer

Yanbing Young Zhang, Stevanus Darmawan, Landobasa Y. M. Tobing +2 more

This paper presents theoretical studies on the ring-bus-ring (RBR) resonator system, which consist of two resonators indirectly coupled through a center waveguide between them. By controlling the intercavity interaction and engineering the phase response through incorporation of RBR with Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we show that it is possible to generate a spectrum resembling electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), which is qualitatively different compared to other existing EIT schemes. The transparency becomes sharper as the coupling strength between resonators is increased, with the background spectrum significantly reduced as a result of additional phase shift from indirect coupling. In addition, the EIT-like spectrum is generated out of low-finesse resonators, in contrast with existing EIT schemes where the resonator's finesse is required to be high. Comparisons with finite-difference-time-domain simulation show fairly a good agreement with analytical formulations.
