Abstract

We investigate the transient response of a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type system with one transition decaying to a modified radiation reservoir with an inverse square-root singular density of modes at threshold, under conditions of transparency. We calculate the time evolution of the linear susceptibility for the probe laser field and show that, depending on the strength of the coupling to the modified vacuum and the background decay, the probe transmission can exhibit behavior ranging from underdamped to overdamped oscillations. Transient gain without population inversion is also possible depending on the system's parameters.

Reservoir-induced transparency and coherent population trapping

Chunguang Du, Zhengfeng Hu, Shiqun Li

We analytically and numerically investigate the response of an open Λ-type atomic system to a probe laser field, where one of the atomic transition is coupled with a double-band radiation reservoir and high- Q defect modes formed by atomic doping. This system can be transparent to a weak probe field being two-photon resonant with the frequency of the defect modes or one of the two band edges, and the high- Q defect modes can even induce an atom–field coherent population trapping (CPT) state without involving the excited state of the atom, in spite of the background decay of the excited state of the atom. The steady-state properties of this CPT are independent of the smoothness feature of the density of modes (DOM) at band edges. However, the CPT never occurs in the absence of any defect even if the DOM is singular at both band edges. We also find that the background decay of the second ground state of the atom will destroy the CPT and increase the probe absorption, but the atomic coherence induced by the defect modes is more robust than that induced by the band edges. The transient properties of the CPT are also studied.

Transient properties of an electromagnetically induced transparency in three-level atoms

Yongqing Li, Min Xiao

We describe the transient behavior of an electromagnetically induced transparency in three-level atomic systems. When the coupling f ield is switched on, the absorption for the probe field is oscillatorily damped to its new steady-state (transparent) value. Transient gain without population inversion and enhancement of dispersion are discussed. A realistic system for experimental testing of these effects is presented.

Investigation of Transient Properties of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency with Different Pump Laser Energy

Xihua Yang

The transient properties of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with different pump laser energies in a Λ-type three-level system are studied by solving the time-dependent matrix equation. The time evolution of the probe laser absorption, the population of the three levels and the coherent term ρ 23 are analyzed. It is shown that transient amplification without inversion can be realized with high pump laser energy and that transient EIT would reduce and transient amplification without inversion would disappear with the decrease of the pump laser energy. Since the probe absorption depends on the product of Rabi frequency of the pump laser and the coherent term ρ 23, the nonzero damping coherent term ρ 23 results in the transient absorption and amplification without inversion at high pump laser energy, and the decrease of the coherence with the decrease of the pump laser energy leads to the disappearance of the amplification and enhancement of absorption.

Resonant and off-resonant transients in electromagnetically induced transparency: Turn-on and turn-off dynamics

Andrew D. Greentree, T. B. Smith, S.R. de Echaniz +4 more

This paper presents a wide-ranging theoretical and experimental study of nonadiabatic transient phenomena in a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ electromagnetically induced transparency system when a strong coupling field is rapidly switched on or off. The theoretical treatment uses a Laplace transform approach to solve the time-dependent density matrix equation. The experiments are carried out in a ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ magneto-optical trap. The results show transient probe gain in parameter regions not previously studied, and provide insight into the transition dynamics between bare and dressed states.

Transient studies of transparency and gain in laser-cooled rubidium lambda systems

S.R. de Echaniz, Andrew D. Greentree, Alan V. Durrant +3 more

Summary form only given. Many studies have been made of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and probe gain under steady-state conditions. We have carried out experimental studies of transient effects in rubidium lambda systems in the non-adiabatic regime where the coupling field is rapidly switched on using a Pockels cell in a time that is short compared with transient time scales. Our preliminary work has confirmed predictions that the steady-state EIT is approached through damped oscillations characterised by the coupling field Rabi frequency /spl Omega//sub c/ and the spontaneous decay rate /spl Gamma/. We report results of our recent investigations into the effects of strong coupling fields conducted in several different lambda schemes in the rubidium 5S/sub 1/2/-5P/sub 3/2/ hyperfine levels in a magnetooptical trap. We also studied the effects of the initial conditions of population and optical coherence, probe absorption on uncoupled Zeeman transitions, and incoherent pumping.
