Abstract

Electromagnetically induced negative refraction induced by microwave field driving hyperfine level transition is studied by proposing a quasi-lambda type four-level system. Negative refraction characteristics are observed when hyperfine levels within ground state are driven by a microwave field which interacts with electric dipole moment or magnetic dipole moment at different hyperfine levels. In addition, two optical transitions between ground state and excited state are driven by two coupling fields respectively, and the frequency bandwidth of negative refraction is controlled by the detuning of two coupling fields. It is shown that frequency bandwidth of negative refraction is much narrower under off-resonant coupling field than under the resonant coupling field and there is a significant difference in behavior between positively detuned coupling field and negatively detuned coupling field.

Electromagnetically induced absorption and transparency in a closed lambda-shaped four-level system

Xiaoli Li, Lianshui Zhang, Baozhu Yang +1 more

A quasi-lambda four-level system shows both electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In addition to an optical coupling field and a probing field, there is a radio field which interacts with two excited state hyperfine levels of the quasi-lambda four-level system consisting of two excited state hyperfine levels and two ground state hyperfine levels. If a driving field which interacts with two ground state hyperfine levels is introduced, the quasi-lambda four-level system is modified to a closed-lambda four-level system. The behaviors of the driving field and radio field are studied in this paper and it is seen that the occurence of EIA or EIT and the whole probing properties are controlled by the Rabi frequencies of both driving field and radio field.

ELECTROMAGNETICALLY INDUCED NEGATIVE REFRACTIVE INDEX IN DOPED SEMICONDUCTORS AT OPTICAL FREQUENCIES

Adil‐Gerai Kussow, Alkim Akyurtlu

Based on methods of quantum optics, we discuss the possibility of achieving the negative index of refraction in a semiconductor with donor-like impurities. The quantum states of hydrogen-like donor atom and states of an electron in conduction band constitute a discrete-level atomic medium within the optical range. The coherent coupling of an electric dipole transition with a magnetic dipole transition leads to permeability and permittivity responses and, within some frequency band, ensures the negative refractive index. The magnetic moment between two quasi-atomic states separated by optical frequencies is induced by a low-frequency electromagnetic field. The implementation of this scheme is carried out in tin-doped indium oxide, and the calculations show feasibility of the effect within a broad bandwidth ∼2% with a high figure of merit greater than 10 in the optical regime.

The switch between electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption due to the power broadening of probing field

Xiaoli Li, Chao He, Jianfei Zhang

In this paper we present a theoretical study of the nonlinear effect in the quasi-lambda type four-level system. The system consists of an excited state level and three ground state hyperfine levels. Probing and coupling field are coupled to between the excited state and two higher ground states, and the microwave field drives the two lower ground states which are associated with probing field. By solving the precision solutions of the equations of motion of density matrix, the absorption properties as a function of Rabi frequencies of the probing field and microwave field are given. As a result, the switch from double EIT to single EIA is found due to the power broadening of probing field. However, the splitting frequency of double EIT has some connection with the Rabi frequency of microwave field.

Negative index of refraction in a four-level system with magnetoelectric cross coupling and local field corrections

Frank Bello

This research focuses on a coherently driven four-level atomic medium with the aim of inducing a negative index of refraction while taking into consideration local field corrections as well as magnetoelectric cross coupling (i.e.,chirality) within the material's response functions. Two control fields are used to render the medium transparent for a probe field which simultaneously couples to an electric and a magnetic dipole transition, thus allowing one to test the permittivity and permeability of the material at the same time. Numerical simulations show that a negative index of refraction with low absorption can be obtained for a range of probe detunings while depending on number density and the ratio between the intensities of the control fields.
