Abstract

The electromagnetically induced negative refraction is an interesting phenomenon of light-atom interaction. The study of its formation mechanism and nonlinear behavior has theoretical significance and potential applications.A Λ-type four-level system configuration with tunable double coupling fields was established. The permittivity and permeability of the system were studied as a function of double coupling field detunings, and the realization of electromagnetically induced negative refraction was investigated. It can be seen that under fixed Rabi frequencies of double coupling fields, when one is resonant and the other is off-resonant or both two are off-resonant,the electromagnetically induced negative refraction can be realized, but showing different characteristics.

Electromagnetically induced negative refraction is an intriguing phenomenon of light-atom interaction. The study of its formation mechanism and nonlinear behavior has theoretical significance and potential applications. In this paper, electromagnetically induced negative refraction is associated with a four-level system driven by microwave field, where a coupling field couples two separate optical transitions. The permittivity and permeability of the system is studied as a function of coupling field detunings, and the result shows that electromagnetically induced negative refraction can be realized by controlling the coupling field detunings when the Rabi frequency of coupling field is fixed.

Electromagnetically induced negative refraction induced by microwave field driving hyperfine levels transition

Xiaoli Li, Lianshui Zhang, Sun Jiang +1 more

Electromagnetically induced negative refraction induced by microwave field driving hyperfine level transition is studied by proposing a quasi-lambda type four-level system. Negative refraction characteristics are observed when hyperfine levels within ground state are driven by a microwave field which interacts with electric dipole moment or magnetic dipole moment at different hyperfine levels. In addition, two optical transitions between ground state and excited state are driven by two coupling fields respectively, and the frequency bandwidth of negative refraction is controlled by the detuning of two coupling fields. It is shown that frequency bandwidth of negative refraction is much narrower under off-resonant coupling field than under the resonant coupling field and there is a significant difference in behavior between positively detuned coupling field and negatively detuned coupling field.

Electromagnetically induced left handedness in inverted Y-type four level atomic system

Zheng Jun, Liu Zheng-Dong, Zeng Fu-Hua +2 more

The system of inverted Y-type four-level atoms interacting with multi-mode light fields is discussed. Through the mechanism of quantum interference, the relative dielectric permittivity and the relative magnetic permeability will changed remarkably. Using appropriately chosen parameters, the real parts of both the relative dielectric permittivity and the relative magnetic permeability will be negative, and then the left handedness effect happens and the left-handed material is realized. The properties of left-handed materials such as the range of frequencies of the negative refractive index can be manipulated via changing certain parameters of the system.

Negative refraction with absorption suppressed by electromagneticly induced transparency in a left-handed atomic system

Shun-Cai Zhao

This paper intends to realize negative refraction with absorption suppressed by the electromagneticly induced transparency(EIT) in a dense four-level atomic system. Without the two equal transition frequencies responding to the probe field, the atomic system displays a negative refraction with the simultaneously negative permittivity and negative permeability(Left-handedness). The response of the probe field is amplified and propagates transparency in some frequency extents. Therefore, our aim for searching the low-loss negative refraction can be achieved in the scheme, given the main applied limitation of the negative refractive materials is the large amount of dissipation and absorption. However, an excessive signal field intensity would increase the absorption near the resonance in our scheme.

Negatively refracting atomic vapour

Jian Qi Shen

A new mechanism for realizing negative refractive index with a four-level atomic system is suggested. The explicit expressions for the electric permittivity and magnetic permeability at probe frequency are presented. It is shown that there is a frequency band in which the four-level photonic-resonant atomic vapour may exhibit simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability, and that such an atomic vapour may become a left-handed material (negatively refracting medium). Compared with the previous schemes to realize negative refraction within the framework of classical electromagnetic theory, the most remarkable features of the present scenario are as follows: (i) isotropic material with microscopic structure units at atomic-scale level, (ii) negative refraction in visible and infrared frequency bands, (iii) controllable manipulation by external fields and (iv) based on quantum coherence in a multilevel atomic system.

How to realize a negative refractive index material at the atomic level in an optical frequency range?

Jian-qi Shen, Zhichao Ruan, Sailing He

The theoretical mechanism for realizing a negative refractive index material in an optical frequency range with an atomic gas system of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is studied. It is shown that under certain conditions such a dense gas can exhibit simultaneously negative permittivity and negative permeability, and negligibly small loss.
