Inherent security of phase coding quantum key distribution systems against detector blinding attacks

Kirill A. Balygin, Andrey N. Klimov, I. B. Bobrov +3 more

Abstract An attack exploiting single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) blinding is one of the effective methods of ‘quantum hacking’ (Lydersen et al 2010 Nat. Photon . 4 686) or cracking quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. This attack was experimentally demonstrated for various QKD systems based on both phase and polarization coding. After such an attack, the eavesdropper knows the whole key, has not produced errors, and is not detected. So far this attack is the only one that was demonstrated in the explicit form on many real QKD systems. It is important that these demonstrations were actually performed in reality, i.e. not in speculations as some other attacks. Therefore, the presence of vulnerability in QKD systems based on polarization coding is an existing fact, rather than just a potential threat. It is often assumed that all systems regardless of the encoding method are vulnerable to such an attack. However, in the case of phase coding, some essential features of photocount statistics on the receiving side make a difference. In this Letter we prove that detector blinding attack, when acts on QKD systems with phase coding, leads to a distortion of the photocounts statistics so the eavesdropper may always be detected. Moreover, one does not need to change the design of the QKD system and/or its control electronics, as it is sufficient to amend only the processing of the quantum states registration results to make the system secure. At the same time, polarization coding-based systems remain vulnerable to such an attack and do not guarantee key security.

Plug And Play Interferometer Configuration Using Single Modulator Technique

Norshamsuri Ali, Hafizulfika, Salim Ali Al-Kathiri +3 more

We demonstrate single-photon interference over 10 km using a plug and play system for quantum key distribution. The quality of the interferometer is measured by using the interferometer visibility. The coding of the signal is based on the phase coding and the value of visibility is based on the interference effect, which result a number of count. The setup gives full control of polarization inside the interferometer. The quality measurement of the interferometer is based on number of count per second and the system produces 94 % visibility in one of the detectors.

Quantum bit error rate analysis of quantum key distribution via single-photon two-qubit states

Zihang Zhu

The hybrid modulation quantum key distribution(QKD) via single-photon two-qubit states scheme is analyzed, and an improvement scheme is proposed. The input-output model of polarization is established. And the influence of the interferometers on the polarization coding is analyzed.Quantum bit error rate(QBER) of polarization coding caused by the phasic error of fast and slow axes and the alignment error between the basis vectors of polarization and polarization axis is simulated.Furthermore, the stability conditions of polarization are derived on this basis. The QBER of polarization coding can be influenced deeply by the fiber M-Z interferometers. The theoretic analysis reveals that the jitter of polarization state is not only derived from the birefringency, but also derived from coordinate system difference between incident light and fast and slow axes in fiber interferometer. Some necessary conditoins for the QKD via single-photon two-qubit states are given. The simulation show that when ρ and θ are both below 0.2 rad,the polarization QBER is less than 0.015.When ρ and θ are both below 0.4 rad,the polarization QBER is less than 0.06.The polarization QBER of 2%-5% in two-qubit QKD scheme could be accepted as far as the safety upper limit of QBER(11%) is concerned.
