Abstract

In this paper, we present a new protocol for achieving lower noise and consequently a higher dynamic range in optical encryption. This protocol allows for the securing and optimal recovery of any arbitrary grayscale images encrypted using an experimental double random phase mask encoding (DPRE) cryptosystem. The protocol takes advantage of recent advances that help reduce the noise due to the correlation of random phase mask in the decryption procedure and introduces the use of a "reference mask" as a reference object used to eliminate the noise due to the complex nature of the masks used in experimental DRPE setups. This noise reduction increases the dynamic range of the decrypted data, retaining the grayscale values to a higher extent and opening new possible applications. We detailed the procedure, and we present the experimental results, including an actual experimental video of a grayscale scene, confirming the validity of our proposal.

Key Phase Mask Updating Scheme with Spatial Light Modulator for Secure Double Random Phase Encryption

Seok-Chul Kwon, In-Ho Lee

Double random phase encryption (DRPE) is one of the well-known optical encryption techniques, and many techniques with DRPE have been developed for information security. However, most of these techniques may not solve the fundamental security problem caused by using fixed phase masks for DRPE. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a key phase mask updating scheme for DRPE to improve its security, where a spatial light modulator (SLM) is used to implement key phase mask updating. In the proposed scheme, updated key data are obtained by using previous image data and the first phase mask used in encryption. The SLM with the updated key is used as the second phase mask for encryption. We provide a detailed description of the method of encryption and decryption for a DRPE system using the proposed key updating scheme, and simulation results are also shown to verify that the proposed key updating scheme can enhance the security of the original DRPE.

Experimental demonstration of the random phase encoding technique for image encryption and security verification

Bahram Javidi, Guanshen Zhang, Jian Li

Optical image encryption and security using random phase encoding techniques have been proposed recently. We present optical experimental results for image encryption and security. The results show that for the image encryption, the image can be well encrypted using random phase masks with a limited number of pixels. We also tested the performance of the optical system for security verification in the presence of different types of input noise and distortions such as scratches, fingerprint marks, and bending of the phase mask. The experimental results indicate that for the severity of the noise and the degree of distortion tested here, the system provides good performance in verifying the phase code.

Shift-tolerance property of an optical double-random phase-encoding encryption system

Bor Wang, Ching‐Cherng Sun, Wei‐Chia Su +1 more

We investigate the shift-tolerance property of the decrypting phase mask in an optical double-random phase-encoding encryption system. A simple method for improving the shift tolerance of the phase mask is proposed. We demonstrate how the robustness to data loss of the encrypted image extends the shift tolerance of the decrypting phase mask. The signal-to-noise ratio is calculated. Both a computer simulation and an experiment are presented.

High performance compact optical cryptosystem without reference arm

Alexis Jaramillo-Osorio, John Fredy Barrera, Alejandro Mira-Agudelo +2 more

Abstract We present a new compact scheme to ensure high performance optical encryption. In this scheme, the encrypted data and the security key are recorded without need for a reference arm, resulting in a significant decrease in the size and complexity of the cryptosystem. The efficacy of the compact scheme to protect data is verified by encrypting and decrypting different inputs. We also test the resistance to both random noise and data loss. Additionally, the potential of the system is evaluated by encoding the data to be encrypted by means of a customized data container. In this way, we achieve a data volume reduction of 97% for the encrypted data while allowing for noise-free information recovery using the proposed cryptosystem. We experimentally demonstrate both encryption and volume reduction, confirming the validity and applicability of our proposal.

Security enhancement for double-random phase encryption using orthogonally encoded image and electronically synthesized key data

In-Ho Lee In-Ho Lee, Myungjin Cho

We propose a security-enhanced double-random phase encryption (DRPE) scheme using orthogonally encoded image and electronically synthesized key data to cope with the security problem of DRPE technique caused by fixed double-random phase masks for encryption. In the proposed scheme, we adopt the electronically synthesized key to frequently update the phase mask using a spatial light modulator, and also employ the orthogonal encoding technique to encode the image and electronically synthesized key data, which can enhance the security of both data.We provide detailed procedures for encryption and decryption of the proposed scheme, and provide the simulation results to show the encryption effects of the proposed scheme.
