Abstract

The, output of a pulsed dye-laser pumped by a frequency-doubled Nd: YAG laser is focused into a heat-pipe oven. The optical wave-mixing processes and parametric oscillations from two-photon excitation of 5d2DJ state in potassium vapor are investigated. Twenty-eight coherent lines within the range of 302-421 nm are generated. Splits and frequency shifts of the parametric oscillations and wavelengths and relative intensities of spectral lines in the wave-mixing processes are explained with a theoretical analysis based on the wave equation, atomic polarization and phase-match condition. The theoretical values are found to be in agreement with the experimental results.

Two-photon resonant optical processes in atomic potassium

P.-L. Zhang, ARTHUR L. SCHAWLOW

Two-photon resonant optical processes, using potassium ns2S1/2 states (7 ≤ n ≤ 20), are investigated in detail by a pulsed dye laser. About 100 coherent lines between 288–422 nm are generated through the processes ωUV ± ωIR = 2ωL and [Formula: see text]. The strongest lines (near mP–4S transitions) are formed by parametric oscillation and are generally split into components that are frequency shifted relative to atomic transitions. About 70 lines are generated by six-wave mixing processes and 15 other lines by four-wave mixing processes. The wavelengths, relative intensities of the lines, and the components of the strongest lines are explained with a theoretical analysis based on the wave equation, atomic polarization, and phase-match condition for both wave-mixing processes and parametric oscillations.

Generation of coherent UV radiation by optical wave-mixing processes in atomic potassium

P. L. Zhang, Y. C. Wang, ARTHUR L. SCHAWLOW

A pulsed dye-laser beam (ωL) pumped by a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser is focused into a heat-pipe oven containing potassium vapor (nk ≈ 1016 cm−3). Two-photon resonant four-wave and six-wave mixing processes using the potassium 8s 2S1/2 state are investigated. Thirty-two coherent UV radiation lines are generated within the range of 300–400 nm through the processes ωUV = 2ωL ± ωIR and ωUV = 2ωL − ω′IR − ω″IR ± ω‴IR, where ωIR are frequencies of laser-induced IR waves generated in the vapor near the transitions 8S–7P, 7P–7S, 7P–5D, 8S–6P, 7S–6P, 5D–6P, etc. The influence of resonant enhancement on the UV line intensities and the phase-matching condition are analyzed.

Two-photon resonant processes in atomic barium vapour

R. Stringat, G. Fabre, M Taleb

Two-photon resonant or nearly resonant optical processes have been investigated in atomic barium vapour ( approximately 10 17 cm -3 ) with a pulse dye laser (frequency omega L ) covering the range 735-415 nm. These interactions result in strong coherent emissions emitted either forward and backward, or forward only. The optical processes responsible for these coherent emissions have been identified. Seventy five lines (frequency omega ES ) emitted from 1000 to 360 nm are due to optically pumped stimulated emissions or stimulated electronic hyper-Raman scattering. Twenty eight lines (frequency omega sigma ) observed from 795 to 250 nm are generated through four-wave-mixing parametric processes with omega sigma =2 omega L +or- omega ES , and nine- (795-260 nm) through six-wave-mixing parametric processes with omega sigma =2 omega L - omega ES1 - omega ES2 +or- omega ES3 .

Wavelength dependence near a degeneracy point of lasing and 4-wave mixing processes in Na vapor

Suzanne Yoakum, Leo Moorman

Accurate measurements were made of lasing and 4-wave mixing processes in Na-vapor inside a double heatpipe oven. Scanning Nd:YAG pumped pulsed dye laser through the two-photon resonance 3s{sup 2}S{sub 1/2} {yields} 5s{sup 2}S{sub 1/2}, and a high resolution double-monochromator near the 5s - 4p{sup 2}P{sub 1/2,3/2} single photon resonance, we easily distinguished the two lasing multiplets due to J = {1/2} and 3/2 populations emitting blue 330 nm light. We also observed two other components. By varying the laser polarization, intensity and Na density these were determined to be parametric 4-wave mixing lines with maximum intensity for slight phase mismatch. As the dye laser was scanned, the wavelengths of the lasing and 4-wave mixing peaks shifted, each pair with its own slope, and crossed - a process providing a spectroscopic pump mechanism to populate the {vert_bar}M{sub J} {>=}{vert_bar} + {1/2} > magnetic substate of the ground state. Similar experiments are underway for other 4 wave mixing processes.

Spectral and energy characteristics of four-photon parametric scattering in sodium vapor

V I Vaĭchaĭtis, M V Ignatavichyus, Vladimir A. Kudryashov +2 more

An analysis was made of four-photon interaction processes under conditions of two-photon resonance excitation of the 3 D sodium level by two-frequency radiation from a single-pulse picosecond YAG:Nd laser with frequency doubling and a KDP optical parametric oscillator. The spatial and frequency spectra of the four-photon parametric scattering (FPPS) were recorded and studied experimentally at various sodium vapor densities (10 15 –10 17 cm −3 ) and also using collinear and noncollinear excitation. It was found that the observed conical structure of the FPPS radiation may be interpreted by an analysis of whether the frequency and spatial phase-matching conditions were satisfied. Dependences of the intensity of the FPPS radiation on the intensity of the exciting radiation, the sodium vapor density, and the detuning of the exciting radiation frequency from the two-photon resonance were obtained.

Two-photon resonant four-wave mixing and multiphoton ionization of cesium in a heat-pipe oven

S. M. Hamadani, John A. D. Stockdale, R. N. Compton +1 more

Optical pumping of cesium vapor in a heat-pipe oven in which the energy of two near-infrared photons is close to the 6D states results in high conversion efficiency (up to 1.7%) of the near-infrared pump light to intense blue, forward-propagating radiation. The blue light corresponds to the 7P-6S transition. The dependence of conversion efficiency upon focusing conditions, cell length, and pump intensity is presented. Absorption and gain coefficients are measured in a second heat pipe. The results are discussed in terms of optically pumped stimulated emission (OPSE), stimulated electronic Raman scattering (SERS), and subsequent nonlinear four-wave mixing of two pump-laser photons and one SERS or OPSE infrared photon, leading to parametric generation at \ensuremath{\omega}=2${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{L}$-${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{ir}}$. Two-photon resonant, three-photon ionization cross sections are also studied experimentally and theoretically for the case of resonant enhancement at the 6D levels of cesium. For comparison, similar results for rubidium are also presented for the 5D levels.
