Abstract

We report the experimental results on measuring the isotope shifts and hyperfine splittings of all ytterbium isotopes for a 399-nm transition by using a quite simple and novel method. It benefits from the advantages of the modulation transfer spectroscopy in an ytterbium hollow cathode lamp and the Doppler-free spectroscopy in a collimated ytterbium atomic beam. The key technique in this experiment is simultaneously measuring the frequency separations of the two spectra twice, and the separation difference between two measurements is solely determined by the well-defined frequency of an acousto-optics modulator. Compared with the most of previously reported experimental results, ours are more accurate and completed, which will provide the useful information for developing a more accurate theoretical model to describe the interaction inside an ytterbium atom.

Optical double-resonance cooled-atom spectroscopy

Thomas H. Loftus, Jason R. Bochinski, THOMAS W. MOSSBERG

We demonstrate that laser cooling, combined with $V$-scheme optical double-resonance spectroscopy, provides a sensitive means to measure isotope shifts and hyperfine splittings. Our technique is illustrated using the 398.8-nm ${(6s}^{2}{)}^{1}{S}_{0}{\ensuremath{-}(6s6p)}^{1}{P}_{1}$ and 555.6-nm ${(6s}^{2}{)}^{1}{S}_{0}{\ensuremath{-}(6s6p)}^{3}{P}_{1}$ transitions in a neutral ytterbium atomic beam having natural isotopic composition. With a precision comparable to existing approaches, our unique method has enabled the most complete single-technique survey to date of the ${}^{1}{S}_{0}{\ensuremath{-}}^{1}{P}_{1}$ isotope shifts and hyperfine splittings.

Modulation Transfer Spectroscopy of Ytterbium Atoms in a Hollow Cathode Lamp

Wenli Wang, Xinye Xu

We present the experimental study of modulation transfer spectroscopy of ytterbium atoms in a hollow cathode lamp. The dependences of its linewidth, slope and magnitude on the various experimental parameters are measured and fitted by the well-known theoretical expressions. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical prediction. We have observed the Dicke narrowing effect by increasing the current of the hollow cathode lamp. It is also found that there are the optimal current and laser power to generate the better modulation transfer spectroscopy signal, which can be employed for locking the laser frequency to the atomic transition.

Frequency stabilization of a 399-nm laser by modulation transfer spectroscopy in an ytterbium hollow cathode lamp

Wenli Wang, Jie Ye, Hailing Jiang +3 more

The modulation transfer spectroscopy in an ytterbium hollow cathode lamp at 399 nm is measured. The error signal for frequency locking is optimized by measuring the dependences of its slope, linewidth and magnitude on various parameters. Under the optimum condition, the laser frequency at 399 nm can be stabilized. The long-term stability of laser frequency is measured by monitoring the fluorescence signal of the ytterbium atomic beam induced by the locked laser. The laser frequency is shown to be tightly locked, and the stabilized laser is successfully applied to the cooling of ytterbium atoms.

Hyperfine structure and isotope shifts of transitions in neutral and singly ionized ytterbium

R. W. Berends, Lute Maleki

The hyperfine coupling coefficients and isotope shifts associated with the Yb+ 6 P23/2∘, Yb 73S1, Yb 6 P11∘, and Yb 6 1D2 states were investigated by Doppler-free saturated absorption laser spectroscopy in an unenriched Yb hollow-cathode discharge. The hyperfine coefficients determined in this experiment are as follows: for the Yb+ 6 P23/2∘ state, 171A = 0.877(20), 173A = −0.245(10), and 173B = −1.460(50); for the 73S1 state, 171A = 6.81(10), 173A = −1.879(10), and 173B = −0.003(18); for the Yb 61D2 state, 171A = −1.573(8), 173A = 0.439(2), and 173B = 0.153(10) GHz.

Doppler-free Yb spectroscopy with the fluorescence spot technique

Altaf Hussain Nizamani, James J. McLoughlin, W. K. Hensinger

We demonstrate a simple technique to measure the resonant frequency of the 398.9-nm ${}^{1}{S}_{0}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}{}^{1}{P}_{1}$ transition for the different Yb isotopes. The technique, which works by observing and aligning fluorescence spots, has enabled us to measure transition frequencies and isotope shifts with an accuracy of 60 MHz. We provide wavelength measurements for the transition that differ from previously published work. Our technique also allows for the determination of Doppler-shifted transition frequencies for photoionization experiments when the atomic beam and the laser beam are not perpendicular and furthermore allows us to determine the average velocity of the atoms along the direction of the atomic beam.

Laser stabilisation to neutral Yb in a discharge with polarization enhanced frequency modulation spectroscopy

Valdis Blūms, Jordan Scarabel, Kenji Shimizu +8 more

Isotope selective optical excitation of atoms is important for experiments with neutral atoms, metrology, and work with trapped ions, including quantum information processing. Polarization-enhanced absorption spectroscopy is used to frequency stabilise a tunable external cavity laser diode system at 398.9 nm for isotope selective photoionization of neutral Yb atoms. This spectroscopy technique is used to measure isotope resolved dispersive features from transitions within a see through configuration Ytterbium hollow-cathode discharge lamp. This Doppler-free dichroic polarization spectroscopy is realised by retro-reflecting a laser beam through the discharge and analysing the polarization dependent absorption with balanced detection. The spectroscopy signal is recovered using lock-in detection of frequency modulation induced by current modulation of the external cavity laser diode. Here, we show the use of polarization-enhanced absorption spectroscopy for isotope selectively loading of $^{171}$Yb$^+$, $^{172}$Yb$^+$, or $^{174}$Yb$^+$ ions into an RF Paul trap.
