Abstract

Authors give a detailed procedure for the calculation of the linear and third-order nonlinear optical absorption in special asymmetric quantum wells. It is obtained an analytic formula for the optical absorption by the compact density matrix method and the iterative procedure. Finally, the numerical results are presented for typical GaAs/AlGaAs asymmetric quantum wells. The numerical results show that the incident optical intensity and the asymmetry of the quantum wells have great influences on the optical absorption.

Calculation of linear and three-order nonlinear optical absorptions in square tangent quantum well

Zhou Li-pin

Analytic expression for the linear and third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients was obtained in square tangent quantum well by the compact density-matrix method and the iterative procedure. The numerical results for typical GaAs/AlGaAs material show that the well width b,well depth Vo and incident intensity I have great influence on the absorption coefficients and the total optical absorption coefficients are induced with the enhancement of b and the reduction of V_0.It is obtained that the peak absorption shift to the aspect of the low energy. Moreover, the peak of the total optical absorption coefficients is significantly induced and the strong absorption saturation will occur with increasing of the incident intensity.

Linear and Nonlinear Optical Absorptions in Semiparabolic Quantum Wells

ZHANGLi, XIEHong-Jing

By using the compact density matrix approach and iterative procedure, a detailed procedure for the calculation of the linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients was given in the electric-field-biased semi parabolic quantum wells(QWs). The simple analytical formulas for the linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients in the systems are also deduced. Numerical result on typical GaAs materials shows that, the linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients sensitively depend on the applied electric field and the confined potential frequency of the semiparabolic QWs systems as well as the incident optics beam intensity.

Nonlinear optical properties in AlGaAs/GaAs symmetric coupled quantum wells

Ruixia Ti, Chaoyang Wang, Guanghui Wang

Based on the density matrix approach and iterative method, we calculated the analytic forms of linear and third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes for symmetric coupled quantum wells (SCQWs) considering a two-level system, and gave the corresponding numerical results. The calculated results show that the optical properties of SCQWs are significantly better than those of asymmetrically coupled quantum wells, and the optical absorption coefficient and refractive index change are affected by the structure parameters of the SCQWs and the incident optical intensity. Their physical mechanisms are elucidated.

Calculation of Linear and Nonlinear Intersubband Optical Absorption in Electric-field Biased Hyperbolic Quantum Wells

Libing Chen

The analytic forms of the linear and the third-order nonlinear optical intersubband absorption coefficients were obtained for general asymmetric quantum well systems using the density matrix formalism.Based on the model, the linear and the third-order nonlinear intersubband optical absorptions in electric-field biased hyperbolic quantum wells were studied. The numerical results were presented for a typical AlxGa1-xAs/GaAs electric-field biased hyperbolic quantum wells. The results show that the contributors to the nonlinear absorption coefficient are due to the electric field, the shape of quantum well and the optical intensity.

Linear and Nonlinear Intersubband Refractive Index Changes in Asymmetric Coupled Quantum Wells

Bin Chen, Kangxian Guo, Ruizhen Wang +2 more

Linear, nonlinear, and total refractive index changes are investigated theoretically in asymmetric coupled quantum wells. The analytical expressions for the linear and third-order nonlinear refractive index changes are obtained based on the density matrix method and the iterative approach. Numerical calculations are performed for typical GaAs/Al(subscript x)Ga(subscript 1-x)As asymmetric coupled quantum wells. The calculated results reveal that a large variation of the refractive index near the transition energy can be obtained in asymmetric coupled quantum wells, and that the incident optical intensity and the structure parameters, such as the barrier width and the right-well width, have great effects on the total refractive index changes.

Within the framework of the compact density matrix approach and an iterative method, the third harmonic generation for asymmetrical quantum well are investigated. Finally, the numerical results are presented for a typical GaAs/AlGaAs asymmetric quantum well. The larger third harmonic generation was obtained in this special quantum well. This is a feasible way to get fine nonlinear materials in experiment.
