Abstract

The features of Gaussian pulse reflection from a nonlinear medium with the resonance frequency dependence of permittivity are investigated. The results of numerical analysis of the equations describing the light-field distribution in reflected pulses with s and p polarizations are presented. The influence of the intensity, incidence angle, carrier frequency, and incident-pulse duration on the reflected pulse envelope shape is discussed.

Interaction of different-shape optical pulses with resonant amplifying media

Denis V. Novitsky

Using the numerical solution of the Maxwell–Bloch equations, we study the interaction of short light pulses with resonant amplifying media. We consider pulses of various shapes – with Gaussian, rectangular, and exponential envelopes, the latter of which has recently attracted increased attention due to its potential for implementing new effects such as virtual absorption. We show that by choosing the shape and duration of the incident pulses, we can control the intensity and time of the amplified radiation generation, as well as the population dynamics of the medium levels.

Characteristics of reflection of an ultrashort light pulse from a thin layer of a nonlinear medium

V. A. Yurevich

A numerical analysis is used to formulate the conditions for the manifestation of bistable reflection of a quasimonochromatic light pulse from a thin layer of a resonant medium with nonlinear refraction. The duration of the light pulse is assumed to be less than the phase relaxation time of the nonlinear material. The nonlinearity is due to the existence, in the energy structure of the active atoms, of transitions adjacent to resonances.

Scattering of light by an intense saturating pulse in a resonance medium

V. I. Rupasov

A linear response of a resonant medium to a weak electromagnetic field is studied in the case when a medium is a gas of three-level atoms subjected to a strong saturating pulse. A noncoherent intense pulse and a coherent 2π pulse (of the kind encountered in the theory of self-induced transparency) are considered. The expressions obtained are used to study the problem of the spectrum of the reflection of light by a pulse moving in a medium. An analysis is made of the possibility of using the Doppler effect, which occurs when light is reflected by a moving pulse, in an investigation of the characteristics of pulse propagation, determination of its parameters, and study of the nonlinear characteristics of the medium itself. Possibilities of experimental observation of the predicted effects are discussed, particularly the possibility of conversion of an electromagnetic radiation spectrum.

Transformation of intensity fluctuations in nonlinear reflection of light

Ya. A. Fofanov

The transformation of intensity fluctuations accompanying the nonlinear resonance reflection of light from a glass-resonant gas interface is discussed. The illumination of the interface at angles close to the critical angle for total internal reflection is found to have certain advantages over orthogonal incidence. At the maximum of the strongest resonance, the reflected light intensity amounts to more than 50% of the incident light. In these conditions, a squeezing of the amplitude (photon) fluctuations is observed in the radiation generated by a semiconductor laser-nonlinear selective reflector system. A simple semiclassical theory adequately describes some important characteristics of this system: the shape of the reflection resonances, the strength of the saturation fields, and so on.

Temporal reflection and refraction of optical pulses inside a dispersive medium: an analytic approach

Junchi Zhang, William R. Donaldson, Govind Prasad Agrawal

We develop an analytic approach for reflection of light at a temporal boundary inside a dispersive medium and derive frequency-dependent expressions for the reflection and transmission coefficients. Using the analytic results, we study the temporal reflection of an optical pulse and show that our results agree fully with a numerical approach used earlier. Our approach provides approximate analytic expressions for the electric fields of the reflected and transmitted pulses. Whereas the width of the transmitted pulse is modified, the reflected pulse is a mirrored version of the incident pulse. When a part of the incident spectrum lies in the region of total internal reflection, both the reflected and transmitted pulses are distorted considerably.

Gaussian pulse transformation upon reflection from a resonant medium

Yu. F. Nasedkina, Dmitrii I. Sementsov

The transformation and longitudinal shift of “the center of gravity” of a Gaussian pulse reflected from the plane surface of a semi-infinite resonant medium are analyzed numerically. The regions of carrier frequencies in which the maximum and minimum deformations of the reflected pulse are observed are determined.
