The influence is investigated of a resonant electromagnetic field on the light absorption by the exciton and biexciton in semiconductor quantum wells. The probabilities of exciton one-photon and biexciton two-photon absorption are calculated.
The biexciton optical Stark-effect under resonant pumping between the exciton and biexciton levels is studied theoretically. The probabilities of biexciton two-photon absorption of a weak probe light and of one-photon biexciton-exciton transition are calculated. The optical Stark splitting manifests itself in two-photon biexciton absorption through two absorption peaks spaced 2 (Omega) apart. Omega is the Raby frequency. In the luminescence spectrum due to biexciton-exciton one-photon transition three luminescence maxima appear which are shifted with respect to the luminescence maximum in the case without pumping.
We investigate the four-wave mixing response of semiconductor quantum wells having a predominantly inhomogeneous broadening of the exciton states. The influence of the biexcitons on the nonlinear emission, in proximity to the lowest exciton resonance, is studied. Using about 1 ps long pulses, we show that biexcitons are created for all excitation energies lying within the broadened exciton absorption line, and that their binding energy does not depend on the exciton energy. Reducing the temporal width of cross-linearly polarized incident laser fields to about 0.1 ps, we observe a drastic changeover from a prompt response to a photon echo, and quite interesting beating phenomena, visible in time-integrated as well as in time-resolved experiments, appear. Our observations compare well with the numerical solutions of the optical Bloch equations for a five-level scheme. The influence of the inhomogeneous broadening on the beating phenomena is discussed.
The cross section of light absorption by semiconductor quantum dots in the case of the resonance with excitons Γ6×Γ7 in cubical crystals Td is calculated. It is shown that an interference of stimulating and induced electric and magnetic fields must be taken into account. The absorption section is proportional to the exciton nonradiative damping γ.
The theory of the coherent pairing of excitons in the presence of a resonant electromagnetic field is generalized to describe the biexciton spectra of molecular crystals, which contain several molecules (atoms) in the unit cell. The excitation spectrum for crystals like anthracene having two molecules per unit cell is discussed in detail. It is found that, at high exciton densities and under resonance of near-resonance conditions and at temperatures below some value T c , the formation of four biexciton states is feasible provided that the dielectric gaps induced by the electromagnetic field are less than those of the corresponding biexciton states. Expressions for the absorption coefficient describing optical transitions to the biexciton states are derived.
