The buffer gas of alkali metal atom vapor cell will affect the alkali atom polarization and spectral line broadening. The method of making a Cs cell containing helium buffer gas is introduced. The pressure broadening of the Cs D2(852 nm) line with the buffer gas is measured using atomic saturated absorption spectrum. The pressure value would be obtained through analyzing absorption linewidth and broadening factors.

Amplified Spontaneous Emission on Sodium D-lines Using Nonresonant Optical Pumping

Timofey D. Petukhov, Gennadiy S. Evtushenko, Evgeny N. Telminov

We describe experiments on the excitation of amplified spontaneous emission on the D -lines of sodium ( D 2 = 588.9 nm; D 1 = 589.6 nm) with longitudinal optical pumping with a large detuning from the D 2 line toward shorter wavelengths. The radiation spectra are measured, showing gain on both lines, at a Na concentration of (1–5) × 10 14 cm –3 , buffer gas (helium) pressure of 600 Torr at the working temperature, and pumping power density of more than 1.5 MW/cm 2 . The time characteristics show that the output radiation varies versus the concentration of sodium atoms in the active medium. The dependences of radiation absorption at the D -lines of sodium on the concentration of Na atoms and buffer gas pressure are given.

Influence of collisions on saturated-absorption profiles of the 557 nm line of Kr I

Catherine Bréchignac, Raymond J. Vetter, P. R. Berman

Saturated-absorption profiles of the lines at lambda =557 nm involving the lowest metastable level of krypton show intense and broad Gaussian backgrounds due to thermalising collisions. These backgrounds are greatly reduced by the addition of xenon atoms which quench the metastable level. The variation of the amplitude of the background relative to the amplitude of the narrow absorption resonance versus pressure is quadratic in pure krypton and linear in mixtures of krypton and xenon. An interpretation of the results is given taking into account transit-time effects, while making use of published results for the quenching cross section.
