Abstract

The buffer gas of alkali metal atom vapor cell will affect the alkali atom polarization and spectral line broadening. The method of making a Cs cell containing helium buffer gas is introduced. The pressure broadening of the Cs D2(852 nm) line with the buffer gas is measured using atomic saturated absorption spectrum. The pressure value would be obtained through analyzing absorption linewidth and broadening factors.

Design of a Measuring Device and Experimental Study into the Relationship between Temperature and the Density of Alkali Metal-Vapor

Huining Shang, Sheng Zou, Wei Quan +4 more

The temperature of the alkali metal cell, which affects the density of the alkali-metal vapor and the gas pressure, is usually difficult to measure directly. However, the temperature of the alkali-metal cell and the density of the alkali-metal vapor are important parameters that affect the performance of the atomic sensor. In this paper, a device that can directly measure the internal temperature of an alkali metal cell in real time is designed for the first time to explore the relationship between alkali-metal vapor density and temperature. Alkali-metal vapor density is measured using the absorption spectrum. The pressure broadening model, combined with the transition of four hyperfine levels, was used to fit the absorption line of 87Rb D1 under the action of 700 Torr N2, and a good fitting effect was obtained. The experimental results show that the density of 87Rb is less than the value calculated by the empirical formula. Based on the experimental results, we give the calculation formula of 87Rb density with an uncertainty of only 4% and obtain the temperature dependence index of the line width and linear displacement of 87Rb in N2 by analyzing the absorption spectrum.

Study of resonance curve width in Cs vapor magnetometer

Sun Weimin

A new magnetometer with Cs vapor in the spin exchange relaxation free(SERF) regime is described.Cs has a higher saturated vapor pressure than other alkali metals;so cesium SERF magnetometer is particularly attractive in applications that require lower power dissipation.Four factors affect atomic transverse relaxations in the SERF magnetometer, including collisions and diffusions among Cs,N2 and He,laser pumping and detecting processes;the buffer gas pressure of He that affects the relaxation is calculated and discussed emphatically in theory at 105 ℃,the result shows that the optimum buffer gas pressure is 350×133.3 Pa.Under the optimum pressure, the polarized spectrum linewidth as the function of the cell temperature is discussed briefly. It is found the least linewidth is only 3.7 Hz corresponding to the electric spin relaxation rate of 278 s-1 at 105 ℃.The result provides a help to increase the sensitivity of the magnetometer with Cs vapor.

Laser spectroscopy with nanometric cells containing atomic vapor of metal: influence of buffer gas

David G. Sarkisyan, G. Hakhumyan, Armen D. Sargsyan +3 more

Comparison of absorption and fluorescence in a nano-cell containing Rb vapor with other Rb nano-cells with addition of neon gas is presented. It is shown that the effect of collapse and revival of Dicke-type narrowing occurs for Rb nanocells containing N2 as buffer gas under 6 and 20 Torr pressure for the thickness L = λ /2 and L = where λ is the resonant λ, laser wavelength 794 nm (D1 line). Particularly for 6 Torr the line-width of the transmission spectrum for the thickness L =λ/2 is 2 times narrower than that for L = λ. For an ordinary Rb cell with L = 0.1 - 10 cm with addition of buffer gas, the velocity selective optical pumping/saturation (VSOP) resonances in saturated absorption spectra are fully suppressed when the buffer gas pressure > 0.5 Torr. A spectacular difference is that for L = λ, VSOP resonances located at the atomic transitions are still observable even when Ne pressure is ≥ 6 Torr. Narrowband fluorescence spectra of a nano-cell with L = λ/2 can be used as a convenient tool for online buffer gas pressure monitoring for the conditions when ordinary pressure gauges are unusable. Comparison of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect in a nano-cell filled with pure (without a buffer gas) Rb with another nano-cell, where buffer gas nitrogen is added, is presented. The use of N2 gas inside Rb nano-cells strongly extends the range of coupling laser detunings in which it is still possible to form EIT resonance.

Optical properties of alkali-metal atoms in pressurized liquid helium

Toshiya Kinoshita, K. Fukuda, Yoshiro Takahashi +1 more

The excitation and emission spectra of alkali-metal atoms (Cs and Rb) in liquid helium are studied. The helium pressure is changed from the saturated vapor pressure to about 25 atm at 1.6 K, under which conditions the liquid helium is in a superfluid state. The pressure shift and broadening of the observed spectra corresponding to the D lines are explained qualitatively by a theoretical calculation based on the spherical atomic bubble model. The Cs ${\mathit{D}}_{2}$ excitation spectra are found to have double peaks, indicating the existence of anisotropic oscillations of the bubble surface. The disappearance of the ${\mathit{D}}_{2}$ emission lines and the pressure-dependent quenching of the Rb ${\mathit{D}}_{1}$ emission lines are also discussed.

Influence of He Buffer Gas Pressure on Cs Atomic Polarizability

Qiang Liu, Yu Dan Sun, Yan Nan Zhuo +2 more

All optical cesium (Cs) atomic magnetometer with high sensitivity is an important technique to detect weak magnetic field. The Cs vapor cell is filled with He buffer gas to reduce spin relaxation rate. However the pressure of He also influences the Cs atomic polarizability due to pressure broadening effect. In this work, the principle of all optical Cs atomic magnetometer is analyzed. The rate equation is used to calculate Cs atomic polarizability as the pressure of He is about 100Torr and pure Cs vapor cell. The calculation shows that higher pressure of He buffer gas can decrease Cs atomic polarizability without considering spin-exchange collisions, as the pump beam frequency is locked to Cs D1 transition F=3F=4.

High-resolution measurement of the pressure broadening and shift of the Cs D1 and D2 lines by N2 and He buffer gases

A. Andalkar, Richard B. Warrington

We have measured the pressure broadening and shift of the cesium $D1$ (894 nm) and $D2$ (852 nm) lines by nitrogen and helium buffer gases at pressures of 0--160 Torr using high-resolution spectroscopy with tunable external-cavity diode lasers. This measurement has a precision of about 1%, which significantly improves upon previously published measurements for the Cs $D1$ and $D2$ lines in ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ and He buffer gases.
