Magneto-optical rotation in an autoionizing line

Abstract

New results, both theoretical and experimental, are reported for magneto-optical rotation (MOR) in an autoionizing line. These include the first experimental demonstration of MOR in a Beutler-Fano profile and the first simulations of MOR patterns based on a previously proposed theory. In essence, the method constitutes the first determination of the variation of refractive index within an autoionizing resonance. The potential of such measurements for the determination of atomic properties is discussed.

The authors report new measurements, by pulsed Faraday rotation spectroscopy, of the magneto-optical properties of several autoionizing resonances. These are believed to be the first experiments in which rotation parameters for autoionizing lines have been determined, and potential benefits of the experimental method are discussed.

The theory of Faraday rotation in an autoionising resonance

J P Connerade

Expressions for magneto-optical rotation in an isolated autoionising resonance embedded in a flat continuum are obtained by applying the Kramers-Kronig relations to the Fano profile formula for photoabsorption. By considering rotation per unit optical depth in a Beutler-Fano profile, optimum conditions for detecting the rotation are deduced, and are shown to depend on both the width and the shape index. The far-wing approximation turns out to be inapplicable in the presence of a continuum background, but large rotation can occur in the transmission window of a narrow resonance of low q.

Magneto-optical rotation of surface plasmon polaritons

Habibur Rahman, Hazrat Ali, Iftikhar Ahmad +2 more

Abstract We investigate magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at the interface of a metal and a four-level atomic system. The MOR of SPPs can be controlled and modified with the intensity and frequency of the applied fields. We show the birefringence enhancement of the weak probe fields propagating through the atomic medium in the presence of the static magnetic field. The external magnetic field has a vital role in the generation and control over the MOR of SPPs. The MOR completely stops when either the external magnetic field or the probe field or both are tuned to resonance. A pretty behavior of MOR of SPPs is observed for a specific set of control field frequency. The enhanced MOR of SPP has significant applications in atomic spectroscopy, optical communication, nano-photonics, optical switches, and precise measurement.

Nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in calcium - theory and experiment

G. S. Agarwal, P. Anantha Lakshmi, J P Connerade +1 more

Theoretical and experimental studies of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in the principal series of calcium are reported. These are believed to be the first experiments on high magnetic field Faraday rotation (defined as achieving rotation angles of the order of or more) in which the nonlinear optical regime has been entered by using laser fields. The present theory is valid both in the linear and nonlinear domains and our theoretical predictions which take into account propagation effects agree very well with experimental results over the entire range of laser strengths.

Nonlinear resonant magneto-optical effects in alkaline metal vapors in the strong bichromatic laser radiation field

T. Ya. Karagodova, Anna V. Kuptsova

In the paper there are presented the last results of computer simulations on the spectra of magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of plane of polarization for the both components of intense bichromatic laser radiation. Also the dependences of MOR on light intensity and magnetic field strength are investigated. The calculations are based on the theory and method, published earlier. The agreement of calculations for the cases investigated in the known experiments with experimental results permits to hope that new peculiarities of the MOR in alkaline vapors considered in our paper can be observed in the natural experiments.

Enhanced nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in cold atoms: A theoretical study

Mohsen Ghaderi Goran Abad, Mitra Valinezhad, Mohammad Mahmoudi

We theoretically investigate magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of a linearly polarized probe field in the four-level N-type cold atoms. By applying a static magnetic field and a weak coupling field, it is shown that the birefringence enhancement is induced in the system. Moreover, we show that the static magnetic field has a major role in switching the dichroism to enhanced birefringence in the system. We also obtain a large intensity for the output field with nearly perpendicular MOR angle by 88 degrees with subnatural width. It is demonstrated that Doppler broadening has a destructive effect on the MOR of the polarization direction of the probe field. The results of our study can be used for selecting narrow band of wavelengths and polarization converter for efficient switching of TM/TE polarization modes in optical communication, the depolarization backscattering lidar, polarization spectroscopy and precision measurements.
