Magneto-optical spectroscopy of autoionizing resonances

Abstract

The authors report new measurements, by pulsed Faraday rotation spectroscopy, of the magneto-optical properties of several autoionizing resonances. These are believed to be the first experiments in which rotation parameters for autoionizing lines have been determined, and potential benefits of the experimental method are discussed.

Magneto-optical rotation in an autoionizing line

J P Connerade

New results, both theoretical and experimental, are reported for magneto-optical rotation (MOR) in an autoionizing line. These include the first experimental demonstration of MOR in a Beutler-Fano profile and the first simulations of MOR patterns based on a previously proposed theory. In essence, the method constitutes the first determination of the variation of refractive index within an autoionizing resonance. The potential of such measurements for the determination of atomic properties is discussed.

Nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in calcium - theory and experiment

G. S. Agarwal, P. Anantha Lakshmi, J P Connerade +1 more

Theoretical and experimental studies of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in the principal series of calcium are reported. These are believed to be the first experiments on high magnetic field Faraday rotation (defined as achieving rotation angles of the order of or more) in which the nonlinear optical regime has been entered by using laser fields. The present theory is valid both in the linear and nonlinear domains and our theoretical predictions which take into account propagation effects agree very well with experimental results over the entire range of laser strengths.

Sensitive magnetometry based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation

Dmitry Budker, Derek F. Jackson Kimball, Simon Rochester +2 more

Application of nonlinear magneto-optical (Faraday) rotation to magnetometry is investigated. Our experimental setup consists of a modulation polarimeter that measures rotation of the polarization plane of a laser beam resonant with transitions in Rb. Rb vapor is contained in an evacuated cell with antirelaxation coating that enables atomic ground-state polarization to survive many thousand wall collisions. This leads to ultranarrow features $(\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}6} \mathrm{G})$ in the magnetic-field dependence of optical rotation. The potential sensitivity of this scheme to sub-$\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{G}$ magnetic fields as a function of atomic density, light intensity, and light frequency is investigated near the $D1$ and $D2$ lines of ${}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}.$ It is shown that through an appropriate choice of parameters the shot-noise-limited sensitivity to small magnetic fields can reach $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}12} \mathrm{G}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}.$

Nonlinear laser spectroscopy and magneto-optics

Dmitry Budker, Donald J. Orlando, Valeriy V. Yashchuk

An experiment on nonlinear laser spectroscopy and magneto-optics at the Advanced Undergraduate Laboratory at Berkeley is described. The experiment consists of three parts. In the first part, students learn to operate a diode laser system and characterize its performance using a Fabry–Perot spectrum analyzer. In the second part, Doppler-broadened laser-induced fluorescence and Doppler-free saturated absorption spectra of the rubidium D2 line (780 nm) are recorded and analyzed. Finally, in the third part of the experiment, which we describe in greater detail, the near-resonant magneto-optical rotation is investigated. Nonlinear light-atom interaction leads to spectacular manifestations of the resonant Faraday effect—polarization plane rotation in a magnetic field applied along the direction of light propagation radically different from the linear case. In particular, narrow (∼30 Hz) effective line widths are observed in this experiment corresponding to a rotation enhancement by some seven orders of magnitude compared to the linear Faraday rotation.

Optical atomic magnetometry

Wojciech Gawlik, Szymon Pustelny

This work presents new methods of optical magnetometry developed in the Center for Magneto-Optical Research at the Jagiellonian University. Using rubidium atoms contained in cm-long glass cells and amplitude-modulated laser we have recorded magneto-optical signals of extremely small widths. These signals allow measurements of magnetic fields with a sensitivity comparable to that achieved with magnetometers based on Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs).
