Abstract

Abstract We investigate magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at the interface of a metal and a four-level atomic system. The MOR of SPPs can be controlled and modified with the intensity and frequency of the applied fields. We show the birefringence enhancement of the weak probe fields propagating through the atomic medium in the presence of the static magnetic field. The external magnetic field has a vital role in the generation and control over the MOR of SPPs. The MOR completely stops when either the external magnetic field or the probe field or both are tuned to resonance. A pretty behavior of MOR of SPPs is observed for a specific set of control field frequency. The enhanced MOR of SPP has significant applications in atomic spectroscopy, optical communication, nano-photonics, optical switches, and precise measurement.

Control over magneto-optical plasmon rotation with Doppler broadening and cross-Kerr non-linearity

Habibur Rahman, Meezan Ahmad, Ubaid Ullah +3 more

We investigate the impacts of cross-Kerr non-linearity and Doppler broadening on the magneto-optical rotation (MOR) induced in surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) located at the interface of a metalic medium and a 4-level atomic system. In this paper, the external static magnetic field and a weak probe field under the cross-Kerr effect result in the birefringence enhancement of the system. Moreover, the incoherent effect of Doppler broadening can regulate the MOR of SPPs. Notably, the controlled MOR of SPPs can be leveraged for a variety of advantageous implementations in the fields of polarization spectroscopy, optical communication, nanoscale Faraday isolation, accurate metrology, as well as bio/chem sensing technologies.

Enhanced nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in cold atoms: A theoretical study

Mohsen Ghaderi Goran Abad, Mitra Valinezhad, Mohammad Mahmoudi

We theoretically investigate magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of a linearly polarized probe field in the four-level N-type cold atoms. By applying a static magnetic field and a weak coupling field, it is shown that the birefringence enhancement is induced in the system. Moreover, we show that the static magnetic field has a major role in switching the dichroism to enhanced birefringence in the system. We also obtain a large intensity for the output field with nearly perpendicular MOR angle by 88 degrees with subnatural width. It is demonstrated that Doppler broadening has a destructive effect on the MOR of the polarization direction of the probe field. The results of our study can be used for selecting narrow band of wavelengths and polarization converter for efficient switching of TM/TE polarization modes in optical communication, the depolarization backscattering lidar, polarization spectroscopy and precision measurements.

Polarization control and enhanced magnetic field sensitivity utilizing surface plasmon polaritons-assisted dual-V-type four-level system

Sanfeng Gu, Tianqi Wang, Zeheng Zhang +2 more

Abstract We propose a kind of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs)-assisted dual-V-type four-level composite system used for high-sensitivity weak magnetic field measurement. The SPPs are excited by a D-shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) deposited with gold nanowires, and are interacted with the above quantum emitter from the rubidium atomic vapor. In the presence of the external magnetic field, Faraday rotation symmetry is broken due to Zeeman effect, resulting in the polarization plane rotation when a linearly polarized probe field goes through the above quantum emitter. With the help of the coupled field and SPPs, Faraday magneto-optical rotation (MOR) are effectively regulated. The Rabi frequency of the coupled field (Ω c ), quantum interference degree (q), and phase difference (φ) between the applied fields show strong dependence on the MOR angle and magnetic field measurement sensitivity. The simulated results reveal that the maximum MOR angle and magnetic field sensitivity both damp with Ω c expanding and q reducing. The maximum dichroism-independent MOR angle of 89.97° is realized for φ = 0° (180°), and the magnetic field sensitivity of 10.88°/Oe is obtained in the sweeping range of −8.88–8.88 Oe for q = 0.99, being 2.66°/Oe higher than that in the absence of SPPs (q = 0). Most importantly, the output probe field with different polarization forms can be realized by adjusting the φ value. Hence, the proposed device exhibits the potential in the fields of weak magnetic field measurement and polarization control.

Manipulation of sensitivity of the surface plasmon polariton waves at the interface of high magneto-optical medium and silver metal using angular interrogation

Qaisar Khan, Bakht Amin Bacha, Iftikhar Ahmad +4 more

In this manuscript, sensitivity of the surface plasmon polariton waves (SPPs) using angular interrogation is coherently manipulated at the interface of four level high magneto-optical medium and silver metal using prism geometry. The control and probe fields detuning, Rabi frequency and decay rate manipulated significantly the angular interrogation of sensitivity of the surface plasmon polariton waves. The permittivity ϵd and permeability μd of the high magneto-optical medium play an important role in the manipulation of the sensitivity. The sensitivity is a function of control field detuning. The maximum sensitivity is reported to 800 deg/RIU with control field detuning. The minimum sensitivity is investigated to 6 deg/RIU with probe field detuning and Rabi frequency of control field. The reported results have useful applications in data storage and chemical sensing technologies.

Gain-assisted superluminal propagation and rotary drag of photon and surface plasmon polaritons

Naveed Ahmed Khan, Bakht Amin Bacha, Azmat Iqbal Bashir +2 more

Superluminal propagation of light is a well-established phenomenon and has motivated immense research interest that has led to state-of-the-art knowledge and potential applications in the emerging technology of quantum optics and photonics. This study presents a theoretical analysis of the gain-assisted superluminal light propagation in a four-level $N$-type atomic system by exploiting the scheme of electromagnetically induced gain and superluminal propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) along the gain-assisted atomic-metal interface simultaneously. In addition, a theoretical demonstration is presented on the comparison between Fresnel's rotary photon drag and SPP drag in view of light polarization state rotation by rotating the coherent atomic medium and the atomic-metal interface, respectively. Analogous to photon drag in the superluminal anomalous dispersion region where light polarization rotation occurs opposite the rotation of the gain-assisted atomic medium, the rotation of the atomic-metal interface also rotates the polarization state of SPPs opposite the rotation of the interface. This further confirms the superluminal nature of SPPs propagating along the interface with negative group velocity. Rabi frequencies of the control and pump fields considerably modify both photon and SPP drag coefficients. Metal conductivity also controls SPP propagation.

The influence of Kerr field and Doppler broadening on magneto optical and image state rotation

Rehana Gul, Hazrat Ali, Muhammad Imtiaz Khan +5 more

We examine the magneto-optical and image state rotation (MOR) of left and right circularly plane-polarized light pulse through a double Λ-type four-level configuration of Rubidium atom via Kerr field and Doppler broadening in the presence of the static magnetic field. The medium’s behavior is different for both orthogonal components of the probe beam, causing linear dichroism or circular birefringence. Enhanced and lossless MOR is obtained by applying the control field through a closed-loop birefringent system. We observe a magnified angle of rotation of probe field in Doppler broadened medium. It is shown that due to the Kerr nonlinearity, the rotation angle of the probe beam is generated and modified through cold and Doppler broadened medium. Moreover, almost complete polarization rotation is observed for a particular set of parameters. The MOR can be effectively utilized in designing new TM/TE polarization modes, optical communication, polarization spectroscopy, lider with backscattering depolarization, precision measurements, and magnetometry.
