Abstract

We theoretically investigate magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of a linearly polarized probe field in the four-level N-type cold atoms. By applying a static magnetic field and a weak coupling field, it is shown that the birefringence enhancement is induced in the system. Moreover, we show that the static magnetic field has a major role in switching the dichroism to enhanced birefringence in the system. We also obtain a large intensity for the output field with nearly perpendicular MOR angle by 88 degrees with subnatural width. It is demonstrated that Doppler broadening has a destructive effect on the MOR of the polarization direction of the probe field. The results of our study can be used for selecting narrow band of wavelengths and polarization converter for efficient switching of TM/TE polarization modes in optical communication, the depolarization backscattering lidar, polarization spectroscopy and precision measurements.

The influence of Kerr field and Doppler broadening on magneto optical and image state rotation

Rehana Gul, Hazrat Ali, Muhammad Imtiaz Khan +5 more

We examine the magneto-optical and image state rotation (MOR) of left and right circularly plane-polarized light pulse through a double Λ-type four-level configuration of Rubidium atom via Kerr field and Doppler broadening in the presence of the static magnetic field. The medium’s behavior is different for both orthogonal components of the probe beam, causing linear dichroism or circular birefringence. Enhanced and lossless MOR is obtained by applying the control field through a closed-loop birefringent system. We observe a magnified angle of rotation of probe field in Doppler broadened medium. It is shown that due to the Kerr nonlinearity, the rotation angle of the probe beam is generated and modified through cold and Doppler broadened medium. Moreover, almost complete polarization rotation is observed for a particular set of parameters. The MOR can be effectively utilized in designing new TM/TE polarization modes, optical communication, polarization spectroscopy, lider with backscattering depolarization, precision measurements, and magnetometry.

Magneto-optical rotation of surface plasmon polaritons

Habibur Rahman, Hazrat Ali, Iftikhar Ahmad +2 more

Abstract We investigate magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at the interface of a metal and a four-level atomic system. The MOR of SPPs can be controlled and modified with the intensity and frequency of the applied fields. We show the birefringence enhancement of the weak probe fields propagating through the atomic medium in the presence of the static magnetic field. The external magnetic field has a vital role in the generation and control over the MOR of SPPs. The MOR completely stops when either the external magnetic field or the probe field or both are tuned to resonance. A pretty behavior of MOR of SPPs is observed for a specific set of control field frequency. The enhanced MOR of SPP has significant applications in atomic spectroscopy, optical communication, nano-photonics, optical switches, and precise measurement.

Control over magneto-optical plasmon rotation with Doppler broadening and cross-Kerr non-linearity

Habibur Rahman, Meezan Ahmad, Ubaid Ullah +3 more

We investigate the impacts of cross-Kerr non-linearity and Doppler broadening on the magneto-optical rotation (MOR) induced in surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) located at the interface of a metalic medium and a 4-level atomic system. In this paper, the external static magnetic field and a weak probe field under the cross-Kerr effect result in the birefringence enhancement of the system. Moreover, the incoherent effect of Doppler broadening can regulate the MOR of SPPs. Notably, the controlled MOR of SPPs can be leveraged for a variety of advantageous implementations in the fields of polarization spectroscopy, optical communication, nanoscale Faraday isolation, accurate metrology, as well as bio/chem sensing technologies.

Enhanced magneto-optical rotation of probe field in thermal medium via spontaneous generated coherence

Saddaf Sultan, Hazrat Ali, Rafi Ud Din +5 more

A four-level double lambda closed atomic configuration is considered to study the polarization plane rotation of the probe beam through cold as well as thermal Rb[Formula: see text] atomic medium by varying the spontaneously generated coherence (SGC). Magnetic field and strong coupling field are applied to the atomic configuration. The light-matter interaction leads to enhanced the magneto-optical rotation. The intensity of the applied fields plays promising role in the generation and enhancement of birefringence. It ultimately enhances the polarization plane rotation of the probe beam in the Doppler medium. In the presence of both SGC and Doppler broadening effects, the optical rotation and transmission of the weak light beam are modified and controlled as well, which have potential applications in magnetometery and laser frequency stabilization.

Probing vacuum-induced coherence via magneto-optical rotation in molecular systems

Pardeep Kumar, Bimalendu Deb, Shubhrangshu Dasgupta

We investigate theoretically the effects of vacuum-induced coherence (VIC) on magneto-optical rotation (MOR). We carry out a model study to show that VIC in the presence of a control laser and a magnetic field can lead to large enhancement in the rotation of the plane of polarization of a linearly polarized weak laser with vanishing circular dichroism. This effect can be realized in cold molecular gases and may be used as a sensitive probe for VIC. Such a large MOR angle can also be used to detect weak magnetic field with large measurement sensitivity.

Magneto-optical effect near the D1 resonance of spin-polarized cold cesium atoms

Jai Min Choi, Jang Myun Kim, Je Hyun Lee +2 more

We report our study of the magneto-optical effect in a strictly linear regime on spin-polarized cold cesium atoms. Due to the low intensity and the short illumination period of the probe beam, less than 7.5% of the sample atoms change their states by absorbing probe photons. We produce a medium of atoms at rest in either the $6{S}_{1∕2},F=3,{m}_{F}=0$ or $6{S}_{1∕2},F=3,{m}_{F}=3$ state by optically pumping atoms trapped in a magneto-optical trap. We use the $D1$ resonance with large lower and upper state hyperfine splittings as a probe transition to avoid hyperfine mixing from the Zeeman interaction. Under this idealized situation we measure the Stokes parameters in order to find the polarization rotation and circular dichroism experienced by the probe light. We find that there are qualitative differences between the results for the ${m}_{F}=0$ and ${m}_{F}=3$ cases. While dispersion and consequent Faraday rotation play a dominant role when the atoms are in the ${m}_{F}=0$ state, it is dissipation and circular dichroism that are important when they are in the ${m}_{F}=3$ state. Similarly, while the size of the Faraday rotation and the circular dichroism for the ${m}_{F}=0$ case scales linearly with the applied magnetic field, for the ${m}_{F}=3$ case it is the shift of the probe polarization change versus frequency that is linearly proportional to the magnetic field strength.
