Abstract

We show analytically and numerically that a double-Lambda system, characterized by parametric amplification of cross-coupled probe and four-wave mixing pulses, is an excellent medium for producing both slow and stored light. Moreover, this system can compensate for the absorption and broadening processes that usually occur without destroying the coherent properties of the medium. The stored probe signal pulse is written by means of a simple Lambda system and is retrieved and amplified, at the same frequency, by a double-Lambda system that also produces a pulse at the four-wave mixing frequency.

Slow and stored light in amplifying four way mixing process

We have investigated experimentally and theoretically four-wave mixing (FWM) in hot potassium vapor as a medium for producing slow and store light. Two pump and a single probe photon were mixed in double-Λ system, characterized by parametric amplification of coupled co-propagating probe and conjugate beams. We have observed very high gains of probe and conjugate, up to 60 and 80 respectively, at two photon Raman resonance, under large one photon detuning, and high K-cell temperature. Using an amplifying medium to alleviate the absorption and distortion of propagating pulses are important for slow-light propagation. We observed ultraslow propagation of probe and conjugate pulses under conditions when parametric amplification of twin beams is well below their maximum values. A fractional delays of close to 5 at a gain ∼1.5, for the probe pulse of 20 ns, have been achieved simultaneously for both probe and accompanying conjugate pulse. FWM mixing process under conditions of the experiment results in broadening of twin beams, close to observed delays.

Amplification of a stored signal beam in atomic medium with double-Λ configuration

Zhuan Li, De-Zhong Cao, Kaige Wang

We study a four-level atomic system with a double-Λ configuration interacting with two probe and two control fields. The linear susceptibilities of the atomic medium show not only the dual electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect, but also an amplification mechanism. The numerical simulations verify that one signal can be amplified in both the transmission and the storage processes, provided two synchronous signals are prepared as input.

Matched Ultra Slow Optical Solitons in Double-Λ Media

Xiaoxue Yang, Wu Xuan, Wu Ying

We study the four-wave mixing (FWM) in a double-Λ atomic system where two strong continuous-wave pump lasers and a weak pulsed probe laser produce an FWM generated pulse. We show that both the probe and FWM generated fields may evolve into bright and dark solitons with the same shape and the same ultraslow group velocity.

Highly efficient four-wave mixing in double- Λ system in ultraslow propagation regime

Ying Wu, Xiaoxue Yang

We perform a time-dependent analysis of four-wave mixing (FWM) in a double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system in an ultraslow-propagation regime and obtain the analytical expressions of pulsed probe laser, FWM-generated pulse, phase shifts and absorption coefficients, group velocities, and FWM efficiency. With these analytical expressions, we show that an efficiently generated FWM field can acquire the same ultraslow group velocity $({V}_{g}∕c\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}--{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5})$ and pulse shape of a probe pump and that the maximum FWM efficiency is greater than 25%, which is orders of magnitude larger than previous FWM schemes in the ultraslow-propagation regime.

Controlled light storage in a double lambda system

Andrzej Raczyński, Jarosław Zaremba, Instytut Fizyki Uniwersytet Miko̷laja Kopernika

The possibility is predicted that after light storing in a medium of four-level atoms it is possible to release a new pulse of a different frequency, the process being steered by another driving beam. It is also possible to store one pulse and to release two different ones, with their time separation and heights being controlled.

Resonant four-wave mixing and parametric amplification in a double-Λ level scheme

U. Hinze, Boris N. Chichkov, E. Tiemann +1 more

Summary form only given. Double-/spl Lambda/ level schemes offer rich possibilities to study the non-linear interaction of continuous resonant radiation fields with multi-level systems. Efficient four-wave mixing with up- and down-conversion has been demonstrated previously. We report on theoretical and experimental investigations related to four-wave difference-frequency mixing and parametric amplification. As a nonlinear medium Na/sub 2/ molecules produced in a sodium heatpipe are used.
