Abstract

We perform a time-dependent analysis of four-wave mixing (FWM) in a double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system in an ultraslow-propagation regime and obtain the analytical expressions of pulsed probe laser, FWM-generated pulse, phase shifts and absorption coefficients, group velocities, and FWM efficiency. With these analytical expressions, we show that an efficiently generated FWM field can acquire the same ultraslow group velocity $({V}_{g}∕c\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}--{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5})$ and pulse shape of a probe pump and that the maximum FWM efficiency is greater than 25%, which is orders of magnitude larger than previous FWM schemes in the ultraslow-propagation regime.

Matched Ultra Slow Optical Solitons in Double-Λ Media

Xiaoxue Yang, Wu Xuan, Wu Ying

We study the four-wave mixing (FWM) in a double-Λ atomic system where two strong continuous-wave pump lasers and a weak pulsed probe laser produce an FWM generated pulse. We show that both the probe and FWM generated fields may evolve into bright and dark solitons with the same shape and the same ultraslow group velocity.

High-efficiency four-wave mixing in a five-level atomic system based on two-electromagnetically induced transparency in the ultraslow propagation regime

Zhiping Wang, Shuangxi Zhang

We have analyzed a five-level Λ-configuration four-wave mixing (FWM) scheme for obtaining high-efficiency FWM based on the two-electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the ultraslow propagation regime. We find that the maximum FWM efficiency is nearly 30%, which is orders of magnitude larger than previous schemes based on the two-EIT. Our scheme allows the possibility for new technological applications such as nonlinear spectroscopy at very low light intensity, quantum single-photon nonlinear optics and quantum information science.

Matched ultraslow propagation of highly efficient four-wave mixing in a closely cycled double-ladder system

Yanpeng Zhang, Andy W. Brown, Min Xiao

We present a fully time dependent, adiabatic solution, and steady-state analysis for the ultraslow propagation of the nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NDFWM) signal and the weak probe beam in a closely-cycled double-ladder system. Under appropriate (especially power balance) conditions, the two-mode probe and phase-matched NDFWM pulses, after a characteristic propagation length, evolve into a pair of amplitude and group velocity matched pulses. Double transparency for the probe and NDFWM beams can be achieved owing to an efficient one- and three-photon destructive interference involving the NDFWM beam and its back reaction to the probe beam. The forward and backward configurations are investigated in this double-ladder system, and their efficiencies are calculated and compared.

Highly efficient four-wave mixing in a coherent six-level system in ultraslow propagation regime

Hui‐jun Li, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to obtain a highly efficient four-wave mixing (FWM) in a coherent six-level tripod system by using a double-dark resonance and multiphoton destructive interference induced transparency. We show both analytically and numerically that the optical-wave mixing in such a system with a pump wave and an internally generated FWM wave mediated by electromagnetically induced transparency and hence propagating with matched ultraslow group velocities can result in a significant enhancement of FWM conversion efficiency. This interesting scheme may be used to generate coherent short-wavelength radiation in dense optical media with very low pump-wave intensity.

Efficient multiwave mixing in the ultraslow propagation regime and the role of multiphoton quantum destructive interference

Ying Wu, M. G. Payne, E. W. Hagley +1 more

We analyze a lifetime-broadened four-state four-wave-mixing (FWM) scheme in the ultraslow propagation regime and show that the generated FWM field can acquire the same group velocity and pulse shape as those of an ultraslow pump field. We show that a new type of induced transparency resulted from multiphoton destructive interference that significantly reduced the pump field loss. Such induced transparency based on multphoton destructive interference may have important applications in other nonlinear optical processes.

Achieving an ultra-slowly propagating maximally entangled state of two light beams via four-wave mixing in a double-Λ system

Xiaoxue Yang, Ying Wu

We propose a scheme via four-wave mixing in a double-Λ system to generate a maximally entangled state of two light beams (the probe laser beam and the four-waving mixing beam), which propagates with ultraslow group velocity. It appears to be the first scheme to achieve an ultra-slowly propagating maximally entangled state of lights.
