Amplification of a stored signal beam in atomic medium with double-Λ configuration

Abstract

We study a four-level atomic system with a double-Λ configuration interacting with two probe and two control fields. The linear susceptibilities of the atomic medium show not only the dual electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect, but also an amplification mechanism. The numerical simulations verify that one signal can be amplified in both the transmission and the storage processes, provided two synchronous signals are prepared as input.

Spectra of pulses propagating in atomic media in the closed double Λ configuration

Andrzej Raczyński, Jarosław Zaremba, Sylwia Zielińska‐Raczyńska

Simultaneous propagation of two probe pulses in a medium of four-level atoms irradiated by three control fields is studied. The double Λ configuration has been closed by a fifth field, coupling the lower levels. It is shown that the propagation can be described in terms of four modes characterized by particular effective susceptibilities, which have absorption or gain peaks and transparency windows. For incoming one-peak pulses, multipeak spectra are built during the propagation including a few components of well-defined frequencies. They evolve along the sample with some of their spectral components being transmitted, absorbed, or amplified.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in systems with degenerate autoionizing levels in Λ-configuration

Bui Dinh Thuan, W. Leoński, Van Cao Long +1 more

We discuss a Λ-like model of atomic levels involving two autoionizing (AI) states of the same energy. The system is irradiated by two external electromagnetic fields (strong -- driving and weak -- probing ones). For such a system containing degenerate AI levels we derive the analytical formula describing the medium susceptibility. We show that the presence of the second AI level lead to the additional electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) window appearance. We show that the characteristic of this window can be manipulated by changes of the parameters describing the interactions of AI levels with other ones. This is a new mechanism which leads to additional transparency windows in EIT model, that differs from the mechanism, where a bigger number of Zeeman sublevels is taken into account.

Coherence and interference enhanced nonlinearities in a four-level system

Jen‐Hao Cheng, Min Yan, Edward G. Rickey +1 more

Summary form only given. Nonlinear optical properties of an atomic medium can be modified by coherence and quantum interference that utilizes electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Because of the vanishing linear absorption and large enhancement of nonlinearities in an EIT medium, nonlinear optics may be studied at low light levels. We report studies of light absorption and parametric amplification based on the EIT enhanced third-order nonlinearity in a four-level atomic system. We have observed the enhanced nonlinear absorption when two coupling lasers and one probe laser are present. We are in the process of preparing the experiments for the double EIT demonstration and observation of the efficient parametric amplification in the four-level system. Because the experimental system is essentially free of Doppler broadening, quantitative comparisons between the experimental measurements and the theoretical calculations can readily be achieved.

Controlled EIT and signal storage in metamaterial with tripod structure

S. Zielińska-Raczyńska, David Ziemkiewicz

In the present paper we have discussed in detail electromagnetically induced transparency and signal storing in the case of one signal pulse propagating in a classical electric medium resembles this of four-level atoms in the tripod configuration. Our theoretical results confirm recently observed dependence of transparency windows position on coupling parameters. In the process of storing, the pulse energy is confined inside the metamaterial as electric charge oscillations, and after required time it is possible to switch the control fields on again and to release the trapped signal. By manipulating the driving fields, one can thus control the parameters of the released signal and even to divide it on demand into arbitrary parts.

Double electromagnetically induced transparency in a four-level lambda atomic system with doppler broadening

Hiền Nguyễn Thị Thu, Bang Nguyen Huy, Le Van Doai +1 more

In this paper, we study the formation of two electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) windows in a four-level lambda atomic system with Doppler broadening. The depth and the width of the EIT windows are easily changed by adjusting the intensity of the controlling laser fields. Meanwhile, the position of the EIT windows is also easily shifted by changing the frequency of the laser fields. In particular, by turning on or off one of the two coupling laser fields, the probe field response can be switched between one or two EIT window regimes, i.e., it is possible to switch between absorption and transparency regimes, and vice versa. In addition, our analytical model also allows one to investigate the influence of temperature (or Doppler width) on EIT windows, which is necessary for experimental observations as well as related applications at room temperature.

Phase Controlled Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Closed Cyclic Lambda Atomic System

Monika Thakran, Yashika Aneja, Satya Kesh Dubey

In this work, Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) has been studied in a microwave driven closed cyclic Lambda atomic system. It is observed that in the absence of microwave field a normal transparency window is obtained, but when a microwave field is also applied between hyperfine levels along with the optical fields an amplification and attenuation in EIT signal is observed depending upon the relative phase between fields driving the atomic system. In fact, a new probe field is generated by microwave and coupling field which interfere constructively or destructively with incident probe field leading to either amplification, attenuation or asymmetricity in probe transmission signal. Also, dependency of phase sensitive amplification on ground state decoherence is also studied. This novel, controllable and amplified EIT signal can be potentially used for the transfer of coherent microwave analog or digital message signal over larger distance using optical fibers where amplification is preliminary requirement.
