Abstract

Abstract We theoretically investigate entangled‐photon generation via biexciton in a planar microcavity. When the exciton‐photon coupling is comparable to the biexciton binding energy, the biexciton can be stably coupled with the cavity photons (referred to as a cavity biexciton). Entangled photons are generated by the cascade decay of the cavity biexciton. We show that high‐efficient generation of entangled photons can be achieved when the superposition state of a cavity biexciton and two cavity polaritons formed by unbound two‐exciton states is realized. Highly Efficient Generation of Entangled Photons by Controlling Cavity Bipolariton States

Hisaki Oka, Hajime Ishihara

We theoretically investigate entangled-photon generation via a biexciton in a planar microcavity. Owing to strong exciton-photon coupling, the biexciton in the cavity produces a bound two-cavity-polariton state (cavity bipolariton). Entangled photons are generated by the cascade decay of the cavity bipolariton. We propose a novel scheme for highly efficient entangled-photon generation by controlling the cavity bipolariton states. It is shown that highly efficient generation can be achieved when a weak cavity bipolariton, formed by a biexciton and unbound cavity polaritons, is realized.

Entangled‐photon generation from a quantum dot in cavity QED

Hiroshi Ajiki, Hajime Ishihara

Abstract We theoretically study polarization‐entangled photon generation from a single quantum dot in a microcavity. Entangled‐photon pairs with singlet or triplet Bell states are generated in the resonant‐hyperparametric scattering via dressed states in the cavity QED. Although co‐polarized non‐entangled photons are also generated, the generation is dramatically suppressed in the strong‐coupling limit owing to the photon blockade effect. Finite binding energy of biexciton is also important for the generation of photon pairs with high degree of entanglement. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Theory of entangled-photon generation via cavity bipolaritons

Hisaki Oka, Hajime Ishihara

Nonlinear optical response of cavity polaritons formed in high-g semiconductor microcavities has attracted much attention because of their potential applications to entangled-photon sources and other quantum information technologies. Theoretical ideas of entangled-photon generation, e.g., biexcitonic cavity quantum electrodynamics and polariton-polariton scattering, have been suggested, however these theories are limited in scope of target because they restrict two-exciton states to either biexciton or unbound two-exciton states. As for exciton system with small binding energy of biexciton, it is likely that the interplay between the biexciton and unbound two-exciton states have much impact on generation efficiency of entangled photons. The authors introduces a general model including both biexciton and unbound two-exciton states and discuss generation efficiency of entangled photons.

Enhanced generation of entangled‐photon pairs from a cavity system

Hiroshi Ajiki, Hajime Ishihara

Abstract We have theoretically studied efficiency of entangled‐photon generation from a quantum well embedded in a microcavity, and have found considerable enhancement of the efficiency. We have determined an optimal condition for achieving the strong enhancement, which is qualitatively understood from a characteristic feature of the cavity QED. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Entangled‐photon generation via biexcitons in nano‐structures

Motoaki Bamba, Hajime Ishihara

Abstract We have constructed quantum electrodynamics theory for excitons whose center‐of‐mass motion is confined in arbitrary‐structured dielectrics with considering their nonlocal optical susceptibility. We systematically investigate entangled‐photon generation via biexcitons in nano‐to‐macro scale materials by this theory. It is revealed that nano‐structured materials provide scattering spectra explicitly reflecting quantum states of confined exciton‐polaritons and are promising sources of entangled photons from the viewpoints of both efficiency and signal‐to‐noise ratio. Entangled photons from quantum dot devices: efficiency of post‐selection

Marek Seliger, Ulrich Hohenester, G. Pfanner

Abstract We theoretically investigate the production of polarization‐entangled photons through the biexciton cascade decay in a single semiconductor quantum dot. A biexciton radiatively decays through two intermediate exciton states, where polarization‐entangled photons are emitted if the two decay paths differ in polarization but are indistinguishable otherwise. This ideal performance is usually spoiled by the electron–hole exchange interaction splitting the intermediate exciton states by a small amount and consequently attaching a which‐path information to the photon frequencies. We discuss post‐selection schemes to mask this which‐path information to an outside observer. We show how spectral filtering and time shifts at a single photon level affect the photon state. Here the solid state environment plays a crucial role in the effective measurement of intermediate exciton states. Evaluating our analytical results with realistic quantum dot parameters we quantify the applicability of suggested protocols for solid‐state based quantum cryptography. Our results indicate, that a high degree of entanglement is only reached by spectral alignment of the exciton states. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
