High-power broadband singlemode Pr 3+ - doped fibre superfluorescence light source

Abstract

A broadband Pr3+-doped silica-based fibre superfluorescence light source at 1049 nm is demonstrated. For ~4 m length of Pr3+-doped fibre, the authors obtain an output power of 60 mW and a linewidth of ~20 nm at a pump power of 190mW. The dependence of the peak emission wavelength on the wavelength of the pump is investigated. The intensity weighted average wavelength is stable with only a small fluctuation of ±0.2 nm for different pump powers.

The spectral characteristics of superfluorescence in rare-earth-doped silica fibres

Fuxi Gan, Yihong Chen

A detailed investigation is made of the spectral properties of several superfluorescence operations in Nd-doped and Er-doped silica fibres pumped by a 514.5 nm Ar ion laser. The study demonstrates the spectral narrowing processes in the operations of superfluorescence. In Nd-doped fibre, the higher gain at 1080 nm suppresses the emission at about 910 nm, but the authors have still realized, for the first time, superfluorescence in this wavelength band, and a 0.4 mW output was achieved in a double-pass configuration. Also, the process of change from superfluorescence to lasing was recorded and analysed.

Broadband superfluorescent emission of the ^3H_4 → ^3H_6 transition in a Tm-doped multicomponent silicate fiber

We report the observation of amplified spontaneous emission in the (3)H(4) ? (3)H(6) transition of Tm(+3) in a Ta(2)O(5)-doped multicomponent silicate fiber. The evolutions of the spectral shape, output power, and center wavelength were measured as a function of fiber length and pump power in the previously unstudied high-power range, where saturation effects dominate. An output power of 1 mW has been achieved at 1.91 microm with a bandwidth of 77 nm.

Coherence length of a Yb fibre superfluorescent source with an adjustable linewidth

E J Park, D. J. Kim, Hoon Jeong +1 more

Abstract Characterization of coherence for superfluorescent light emitted from a diode-pumped Yb-doped fiber source is reported. We have constructed a superfluorescent light source with an adjustable linewidth employing a Yb-doped fiber master oscillator and two power-amplifier stages and measured its coherence length as a function of a linewidth in a Michelson interferometer. The experimental values are in good agreement with the numerically calculated values using the given spectral intensity distribution. The results indicate that the mechanism for linewidth broadening of the fiber superfluorescent output can be attributed to inhomogeneous line broadening of an atomic transition. The prospect of the fiber superfluorescent source with a tailored coherence length will be discussed.

Single-frequency continuous-wave diode-pumped Pr3+:BaY2F8 orange laser

The optical transition (3H4→1D2) of trivalent praseodymium embedded in crystalline matrices is a promising candidate for the realization of optically controlled quantum memories. This application requires a specific laser source emitting at 606 nm whose short-term linewidth is smaller than the linewidth of the considered ion, i.e., in the kHz range. Currently, this can only be addressed with a highly frequency stabilized dye laser [1]. In order to develop a simpler all-solid-state laser source suitable for coherent processing of Pr3+, we have explored Pr3+-doped fluoride materials which are well-known to offer a large range of available laser transitions in the visible spectrum ranging from blue to red [2] including an orange one around 600 nm, the pumping transitions lying in the blue between 445 and 480 nm. The recent developments of high power blue laser diodes emitting around 445 nm enable now the pumping of Pr-doped lasers in a compact setup. We present, here, the results we obtained with the diode pumping of a Pr3+:BaY2F8(Pr:BYF) crystal which emits at 607 nm.
