Abstract

We have demonstrated the first superfluorescent fibre source emitting in the range. In a double-pass configuration with an amplifier, its output power is under pumping at . Its emission spectrum has a nearly Gaussian shape, with a full width at half maximum of at the highest pump power.

Engineering the redistribution of power in an erbium-doped superfluorescent fibre source

Duncan McMillan

We demonstrate a novel method for equalising the spectra of erbium doped superfluorescent fibre sources in the double-pass forward configuration. The equalising technique uses novel single-mode fibre to planar waveguide filters in a double-pass forward superfluorescent source to smooth the output spectrum. The insertion loss of the filter device used in this paper is <0.9dB but insertion losses of 0.2dB are typical. The unfiattened double-pass forward superfluorescent source with 108.5mW pump power has an output power of <30mW, 44.2% of the quantum efficiency and a 3dB linewidth of 5.43nm. The equalised DPF SFS with 108.5mW pump power has an output <30mW, 44.85% of the quantum efficiency, a 3dB linewidth of 31.26mn with a small ~0.936dB ripple. The overall gain flattened spectral density is increased from 468.6μW/nm to 887.8?W/um in the lSSOnm region.

High-power broadband singlemode Pr 3+ - doped fibre superfluorescence light source

Y. Shi, Ove Poulsen

A broadband Pr3+-doped silica-based fibre superfluorescence light source at 1049 nm is demonstrated. For ~4 m length of Pr3+-doped fibre, the authors obtain an output power of 60 mW and a linewidth of ~20 nm at a pump power of 190mW. The dependence of the peak emission wavelength on the wavelength of the pump is investigated. The intensity weighted average wavelength is stable with only a small fluctuation of ±0.2 nm for different pump powers.

Spectral tailoring of erbium superfluorescent fibresource

Shellee D. Dyer, Kent B. Rochford

The output spectrum of an erbium superfluorescent fibre source (SFS) is tailored by replacing the broadband mirror in the conventional double-pass design with a combination of reflective Bragg gratings. Increased bandwidth and a factor of two reduction in coherence length are demonstrated compared to a conventional SFS.

The spectral characteristics of superfluorescence in rare-earth-doped silica fibres

Fuxi Gan, Yihong Chen

A detailed investigation is made of the spectral properties of several superfluorescence operations in Nd-doped and Er-doped silica fibres pumped by a 514.5 nm Ar ion laser. The study demonstrates the spectral narrowing processes in the operations of superfluorescence. In Nd-doped fibre, the higher gain at 1080 nm suppresses the emission at about 910 nm, but the authors have still realized, for the first time, superfluorescence in this wavelength band, and a 0.4 mW output was achieved in a double-pass configuration. Also, the process of change from superfluorescence to lasing was recorded and analysed.

Modeling a Broadband Bismuth-Doped Fiber Amplifier

Chun Jiang

In this paper, we present the energy level, transition configuration, and numerical model of a bismuth-doped fiber amplifier for the first time, to the best of authorspsila knowledge. With a three-level system, the rate and power propagation equations of the model are solved to examine the effect of the fiber parameter and pump power on the bandwidth of the gain spectra. It can be predicted that when excited at wavelength in the 800-900 nm range, the amplifier can have a ultrabroad gain spectra in the 1.2-1.62 mum range, which cover the low-loss windows of the all-wave fiber.

Polarized superfluorescent fiber source

Dario G. Falquier, Jefferson L. Wagener, Michel J. F. Digonnet +1 more

We report the demonstration of a polarized superfluorescent fiber source (SFS) that increases the power output in the desired linearly polarized component by a factor of 1.76 over that of a standard, unpolarized SFS that uses the same pump power. This increase in efficiency is accomplished by insertion of a low-loss polarizer at an optimum point in the erbium-doped fiber of a standard SFS.
