Abstract

Abstract Characterization of coherence for superfluorescent light emitted from a diode-pumped Yb-doped fiber source is reported. We have constructed a superfluorescent light source with an adjustable linewidth employing a Yb-doped fiber master oscillator and two power-amplifier stages and measured its coherence length as a function of a linewidth in a Michelson interferometer. The experimental values are in good agreement with the numerically calculated values using the given spectral intensity distribution. The results indicate that the mechanism for linewidth broadening of the fiber superfluorescent output can be attributed to inhomogeneous line broadening of an atomic transition. The prospect of the fiber superfluorescent source with a tailored coherence length will be discussed.

High-power broadband singlemode Pr 3+ - doped fibre superfluorescence light source

Y. Shi, Ove Poulsen

A broadband Pr3+-doped silica-based fibre superfluorescence light source at 1049 nm is demonstrated. For ~4 m length of Pr3+-doped fibre, the authors obtain an output power of 60 mW and a linewidth of ~20 nm at a pump power of 190mW. The dependence of the peak emission wavelength on the wavelength of the pump is investigated. The intensity weighted average wavelength is stable with only a small fluctuation of ±0.2 nm for different pump powers.

Fluorescence and superfluorescence line narrowing and tunability of Nd/sup 3+/ doped fibers

Gérard Monnom, Bernard Dussardier, Eric Maurice +2 more

The inhomogeneous behavior of the 1.06 /spl mu/m-neodymium transitions in doped optical fibers have been investigated, using the fluorescence line narrowing technique, pumping on the /sup 4/F/sub 3/2/ and /sup 4/F/sub 5/2/ sublevels at 4 K. Each observed transition has been identified. As the pump wavelength varies, the shift of the main fluorescence line is 40 nm, with the two pumping levels. We have studied the spectral behavior of the superfluorescence as a function of the pump wavelength, the temperature, and the absorbed power. The spectral evolution depends on /spl lambda//sub p/ with 19 nm-tuning range at low temperature. At 300 K, the quasihomogeneous behavior of the transition decreases the tunability to 14 nm. Based on these results, we present a simple technique permitting precise prediction of gain and spectral line shapes of superfluorescent Nd-doped fiber sources.>

Homogeneous broadening in the spectrum of a broadband erbium-doped fibre light source

S. K. Morshnev, Nikolay I. Starostin, Ya V Przhiyalkovsky +1 more

Abstract Interference of wave trains separated out in an inhomogeneous emission spectrum of a superluminescent erbium-doped fibre source has been studied by scanning the wavelength of a spectrum analyser. The results demonstrate that, as the spectral resolution of the spectrum analyser decreases to a level corresponding to a sharp drop in interference fringe visibility relative to its original level, near 100 %, fringe visibility becomes dependent on the wavelength in the inhomogeneous spectrum of the source. The reason for this is that, at some characteristic resolution δλ (δλ > 0.5 nm in our case), the coherence time of wave trains is not limited by the spectral resolution of the spectrum analyser and is related to the inhomogeneous spectrum of the source, whose limiting width can be thought of as the homogeneous linewidth in the spectrum of the source. This feature can be used for evaluating homogeneous line broadening.

Spectral tailoring of erbium superfluorescent fibresource

Shellee D. Dyer, Kent B. Rochford

The output spectrum of an erbium superfluorescent fibre source (SFS) is tailored by replacing the broadband mirror in the conventional double-pass design with a combination of reflective Bragg gratings. Increased bandwidth and a factor of two reduction in coherence length are demonstrated compared to a conventional SFS.
