Photon echo studies of biexcitons and coherences in colloidal CdSe quantum dots

Abstract

Abstract Nonlinear optical properties of colloidal quantum dots are studied to elucidate the significance and nature of many‐body effects. Two‐pulse photon echo studies of nanocrystalline CdSe quantum dots are reported for samples dispersed in a poly(butylmethacrylate) film (4.4 K). Oscillations are observed in the experimental data that are attributed to 1S3/21Se–2S3/21Se biexciton cohererences. Signals are simulated using a phenomenological model based on the many‐body description of the dynamics (the average polarization model). It is found that the electronic coherences and the nonlinear response originating from biexciton source terms are important, but their manifestation in the photon echo signals is strongly influenced by the interplay between homogeneous and inhomogeneous line broadening. Nonlinear optical response and exciton dephasing in quantum dots

E. A. Muljarov, R. Zimmermann

Abstract The full time‐dependent four‐wave mixing polarization in quantum dots is microscopically calculated, taking into account acoustic phonon‐assisted transitions between different exciton states of the dot. It is shown that quite different dephasing times of higher exciton states in pancake anisotropic InGaAs quantum dots are responsible for the experimentally observed [1] double‐exponential decay in the photon echo signal. Coherent nonlinear optical response of excitons and biexcitons in quantum dots coupled to phonons

A. Krügel, V. M. Axt, T. Kühn +2 more

Abstract Four wave mixing signals from single dots and dot ensembles involving excitonic and biexcitonic transitions are discussed. The results have been obtained analytically from a four level dot model coupled to longitudinal acoustic phonons. Time integrated four wave mixing amplitudes for quantum dot ensembles exhibit polarization dependent quantum beats that have already been found in experimental data. In four wave mixing signals of single quantum dots we find that the ground state to exciton transition has two contributions. One is identical to the known solution of the two level quantum dot model and leads to symmetric spectra for longer delay times, while the other comprises phase information from the biexciton and results in asymmetric spectra. Two‐photon processes in quantum dots: biexciton Rabi oscillations and exciton polarization flipping

Paweł Machnikowski

Abstract The paper discusses two‐photon Rabi oscillations between the ground state of a quantum dot and the biexciton state, as well as two‐photon oscillations between the two single‐exciton states with different circular polarizations. The effect of phonon‐induced decoherence on these processes is also described. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Excitonic Rabi oscillations in self‐assembled quantum dots studied by photon echoes

Kenta Asakura, Yasuyoshi Mitsumori, Hideo Kosaka +5 more

Abstract We report the excitonic Rabi oscillations in self assembled quantum dots observed by photon echo spectroscopy. The amplitude of the observed Rabi oscillations increases with the pulse area, which is different from the results of previous reports. A numerical calculation of the Rabi oscillations including the local field effect in a quantum dot well reproduces the experimental oscillations, indicating that the local field effect is one of the important origins of the modification of the Rabi oscillations in quantum dots (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Coherent control of the biexciton in a single quantum dot

Timur Flissikowski, Alexander Betke, Ilya A. Akimov +1 more

Abstract We report on coherent control of the two‐photon transition between the ground state and the biexciton state on a single quantum dot level. The population of the biexciton is monitored by the cascaded spontaneous emission of the biexciton complex via the exciton states. The signal shows interference pattern at the double laser frequency and its contrast decays non‐exponentially at the time scale of 10 ps. The contrast decrease is attributed to a dynamical inhomogeneous broadening of the energy levels due to long‐term fluctuations in the dot environment. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Coulomb correlations, spectral line shapes, and size distributions of CdSe colloidal nanocrystals

Gregory D. Scholes, Margaret A. Hines, Mayrose R. Salvador

We report transient photon echo data for CdSe nanocrystals at 4.4K. The data and simulations, which include the effects of many-particle correlations, suggest that a significant contribution to the signal originates from an instrinsic inhomogeneity in the heavy-hole-type resonance energy. Our results indicate homogeneous line shapes that are consistent with those reported in single molecule studies.
