Coherent control of the biexciton in a single quantum dot

Abstract

Abstract We report on coherent control of the two‐photon transition between the ground state and the biexciton state on a single quantum dot level. The population of the biexciton is monitored by the cascaded spontaneous emission of the biexciton complex via the exciton states. The signal shows interference pattern at the double laser frequency and its contrast decays non‐exponentially at the time scale of 10 ps. The contrast decrease is attributed to a dynamical inhomogeneous broadening of the energy levels due to long‐term fluctuations in the dot environment. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Non‐linear optics on an exciton state in a single quantum dot

Romain Melet, R. Grousson, V. Voliotis +1 more

Abstract We report on non‐linear effects on the exciton ground state in a single quantum dot, driven by a strong resonant optical field. The resonant excitation is achieved by embedding the quantum dots in a waveguiding structure. Thus, the light–matter coupling is enhanced, allowing the observation of Rabi oscillations up to three periods. With increasing pulse area, a decrease of the exciton lifetime is observed leading to a very rapid damping of the oscillations amplitude. Resonant coherent control experiments show that the coherence time of the ground exciton state in a single quantum dot is fast, of the order of a few tens of picoseconds. Two‐colour photocurrent detection technique for coherent control of a single InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot

Stephen J. Boyle, A. J. Ramsay, Roman S. Kolodka +5 more

Abstract We present a two‐colour photocurrent detection method for coherent control of a single InGaAs/GaAs self‐assembled quantum dot. A pulse shaping technique provides a high degree of control over picosecond optical pulses. Rabi rotations on the exciton to biexciton transition are presented, and fine structure beating is detected via time‐resolved measurements. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Two‐photon processes in quantum dots: biexciton Rabi oscillations and exciton polarization flipping

Paweł Machnikowski

Abstract The paper discusses two‐photon Rabi oscillations between the ground state of a quantum dot and the biexciton state, as well as two‐photon oscillations between the two single‐exciton states with different circular polarizations. The effect of phonon‐induced decoherence on these processes is also described. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Quantum interferences of a single quantum dot in the case of detuning

Steffen Michaelis de Vasconcellos, Stefan Stufler, Sven‐Ake Wegner +3 more

Abstract We report on highly phase sensitive measurements with a slightly detuned excitation of a quantum mechanical two‐level system. It is formed by the single exciton ground state of a single quantum dot, which is incorporated in a n‐i‐Schottky diode. We excited the two‐level system by two partly overlapping laser pulses with variable phase shift. To investigate the properties of the quantum system we determine its occupancy by measuring the photocurrent. The experimental data is compared to a numerical simulation of the system. Adiabatic rapid passage in quantum dots: phonon‐assisted decoherence and biexciton generation

Krzysztof Gawarecki, S. Lüker, Doris E. Reiter +5 more

Abstract We study the evolution of a quantum dot controlled by a frequency‐swept (chirped), linearly polarized laser pulse in the presence of carrier‐phonon coupling. The final occupation of the exciton state is limited both due to phonon‐induced transitions between the adiabatic spectral branches and because of phonon‐assisted transitions to the biexcitostate. When the biexciton shift is large enough, the quantum dot can be modeled as a two‐level system, which corresponds to excitation with circularly polarized light. For this case, we compare different methods of simulations: (i) a time convolutionless method, (ii) correlation expansion and (iii) path integrals. We show that results obtained from these methods agree perfectly at temperatur. (© 2013 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Coherent control of exciton–biexciton beats: direction selectivity of four‐wave‐mixing signals in experiment and microscopic theory

T. Voss, Ilja Rückmann, J. Gutowski +2 more

Abstract In experiments and simulations based on a microscopic theory the optical coherent control of exciton–biexciton beats in coherent four‐wave‐mixing signals from a semiconductor quantum well is demonstrated. It is found that a reduction of the beat amplitude for one four‐wave‐mixing direction may at the same time coincide with a large beat amplitude for the other direction. The results can be understood by considering that at least two‐photon processes are required to coherently excite biexcitonic transitions which are responsible for the occurrence of the beat structure in the four‐wave‐mixing signals.
