Non‐linear optics on an exciton state in a single quantum dot

Abstract

Abstract We report on non‐linear effects on the exciton ground state in a single quantum dot, driven by a strong resonant optical field. The resonant excitation is achieved by embedding the quantum dots in a waveguiding structure. Thus, the light–matter coupling is enhanced, allowing the observation of Rabi oscillations up to three periods. With increasing pulse area, a decrease of the exciton lifetime is observed leading to a very rapid damping of the oscillations amplitude. Resonant coherent control experiments show that the coherence time of the ground exciton state in a single quantum dot is fast, of the order of a few tens of picoseconds. Resonant excitonic emission of a single quantum dot in the Rabi regime

Romain Melet, V. Voliotis, Alexandre Enderlin +4 more

We report on coherent resonant emission of the fundamental exciton state in a single semiconductor GaAs quantum dot. A resonant regime with picosecond laser excitation is realized by embedding the quantum dots in a one-dimensional waveguiding structure. As the pulse intensity is increased, Rabi oscillation is observed up to three periods. The Rabi regime is achieved owing to an enhanced light-matter coupling in the waveguide but with different dynamics with respect to usual cavity quantum electrodynamics. The resonant control of the quantum dot fundamental transition opens new possibilities in quantum state manipulation and quantum optics experiments in condensed-matter physics.

Strong light‐matter coupling in a quantum dot: local field effects

Gregory Ya. Slepyan, A. Magyarov, С. А. Максименко +2 more

Manifestation of local fields in excitonic Rabi oscillations in an isolated arbitrary shaped quantum dot (QD) has been theoretically investigated. Interaction of QD with harmonic electromagnetic field as well as with ultrashort optical pulse has been considered. Bifurcation and anharmonism in the Rabi oscillations in a QD are predicted. Step-like transitions of the inversion as a function of peak pulse strength are demonstrated to be observable in a QD exposed to a Gaussian pulse. (© 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Coherent control of ground state excitons in the nonlinear regime within an ensemble of self‐assembled InAs quantum dots

Thomas Moldaschl, Thomas G. Muller, Sebastian Golka +3 more

Abstract In this work femtosecond spectral hole burning spectroscopy is used to resonantly excite ground state excitons in an ensemble of self‐assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots with a strong pump pulse. Two fundamental coherent nonlinear effects are observed with the aid of the intrinsic time‐ and frequency resolution of the setup: The low temperature Rabi oscillation of the two‐level system associated with the excitonic ground state transition and the observation of two‐photon absorption in the surrounding GaAs crystal matrix. The emergence of the latter effect also infers the existence of charged excitons in the nominally undoped QD sample, backed up by the observation of additional spectral holes next to the excitonic transitions. Coherent control of the biexciton in a single quantum dot

Timur Flissikowski, Alexander Betke, Ilya A. Akimov +1 more

Abstract We report on coherent control of the two‐photon transition between the ground state and the biexciton state on a single quantum dot level. The population of the biexciton is monitored by the cascaded spontaneous emission of the biexciton complex via the exciton states. The signal shows interference pattern at the double laser frequency and its contrast decays non‐exponentially at the time scale of 10 ps. The contrast decrease is attributed to a dynamical inhomogeneous broadening of the energy levels due to long‐term fluctuations in the dot environment. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Decoherence of a resonantly driven exciton in a single quantum dot

M. Ravaro, Alexandre Enderlin, Catherine Tonin +4 more

We report on coherent control of the resonantly driven exciton state in a single quantum dot in the strong coupling regime. With picosecond laser pulses, the two-level system undergoes Rabi oscillations and a given coherent superposition of states can be addressed. Using a pair of phase-locked pulses, optical manipulation is achieved during the coherence time of the qu-bit. The dephasing processes are also studied and we show that in typical quantum dots, the coherence time T 2 can be of the same order of magnitude as the effective lifetime of the exciton T 1 (a few hundreds of ps) although not reaching the upper theoretical limit of 2T 1 . We conclude that energy relaxation and pure dephasing processes due to virtual scattering with phonons contribute on an equal footing to the loss of coherence.

Excitonic Rabi oscillations in self‐assembled quantum dots studied by photon echoes

Kenta Asakura, Yasuyoshi Mitsumori, Hideo Kosaka +5 more

Abstract We report the excitonic Rabi oscillations in self assembled quantum dots observed by photon echo spectroscopy. The amplitude of the observed Rabi oscillations increases with the pulse area, which is different from the results of previous reports. A numerical calculation of the Rabi oscillations including the local field effect in a quantum dot well reproduces the experimental oscillations, indicating that the local field effect is one of the important origins of the modification of the Rabi oscillations in quantum dots (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
