Abstract

Abstract We report on highly phase sensitive measurements with a slightly detuned excitation of a quantum mechanical two‐level system. It is formed by the single exciton ground state of a single quantum dot, which is incorporated in a n‐i‐Schottky diode. We excited the two‐level system by two partly overlapping laser pulses with variable phase shift. To investigate the properties of the quantum system we determine its occupancy by measuring the photocurrent. The experimental data is compared to a numerical simulation of the system. Ramsey fringes in a single InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot

Patrick Ester, Stefan Stufler, Steffen Michaelis de Vasconcellos +2 more

Abstract We report the observation of Ramsey fringes in single InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots. With double pulse p/2 excitation it is possible to control the occupancy and the phase of a quantum dot. The occupancy of the quantum dot oscillates with detuning. These Ramsey fringes are caused by a voltage dependent detuning of the QD. Due to the double pulse excitation the spectral sensitivity is strongly enhanced as compared to single pulse experiments. At long delay times we are able to resolve extremely narrow spectral fringes, clearly below the homogeneous linewidth of the underlying QD two level system. Our results demonstrate precision measurements on single quantum dots with strong implications for future quantum gates and quantum measurements. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Coherent control of the biexciton in a single quantum dot

Timur Flissikowski, Alexander Betke, Ilya A. Akimov +1 more

Abstract We report on coherent control of the two‐photon transition between the ground state and the biexciton state on a single quantum dot level. The population of the biexciton is monitored by the cascaded spontaneous emission of the biexciton complex via the exciton states. The signal shows interference pattern at the double laser frequency and its contrast decays non‐exponentially at the time scale of 10 ps. The contrast decrease is attributed to a dynamical inhomogeneous broadening of the energy levels due to long‐term fluctuations in the dot environment. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Non‐linear optics on an exciton state in a single quantum dot

Romain Melet, R. Grousson, V. Voliotis +1 more

Abstract We report on non‐linear effects on the exciton ground state in a single quantum dot, driven by a strong resonant optical field. The resonant excitation is achieved by embedding the quantum dots in a waveguiding structure. Thus, the light–matter coupling is enhanced, allowing the observation of Rabi oscillations up to three periods. With increasing pulse area, a decrease of the exciton lifetime is observed leading to a very rapid damping of the oscillations amplitude. Resonant coherent control experiments show that the coherence time of the ground exciton state in a single quantum dot is fast, of the order of a few tens of picoseconds. Two‐colour photocurrent detection technique for coherent control of a single InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot

Stephen J. Boyle, A. J. Ramsay, Roman S. Kolodka +5 more

Abstract We present a two‐colour photocurrent detection method for coherent control of a single InGaAs/GaAs self‐assembled quantum dot. A pulse shaping technique provides a high degree of control over picosecond optical pulses. Rabi rotations on the exciton to biexciton transition are presented, and fine structure beating is detected via time‐resolved measurements. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Two‐photon processes in quantum dots: biexciton Rabi oscillations and exciton polarization flipping

Paweł Machnikowski

Abstract The paper discusses two‐photon Rabi oscillations between the ground state of a quantum dot and the biexciton state, as well as two‐photon oscillations between the two single‐exciton states with different circular polarizations. The effect of phonon‐induced decoherence on these processes is also described. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
