Nonlinear optical response and exciton dephasing in quantum dots

Abstract

Abstract The full time‐dependent four‐wave mixing polarization in quantum dots is microscopically calculated, taking into account acoustic phonon‐assisted transitions between different exciton states of the dot. It is shown that quite different dephasing times of higher exciton states in pancake anisotropic InGaAs quantum dots are responsible for the experimentally observed [1] double‐exponential decay in the photon echo signal. Dephasing of excited‐state excitons in InGaAs quantum dots

Paola Borri, W. Langbein, Egor A. Muljarov +1 more

Abstract We measure the dephasing time of the first optically‐active excited‐state excitonic transition in strongly confined InGaAs quantum dots using transient four‐wave mixing. The optically‐driven excited‐state polarization shows a bi‐exponential decay with a significant fraction of the probed excited states exhibiting a very long dephasing time, in the nanosecond range at 10 K. The full time‐dependent four‐wave mixing polarization is microscopically calculated by taking into account both virtual and real acoustic phonon‐assisted transitions. The bi‐exponential decay is qualitatively explained by a model of two‐bright excitonic excited states non‐degenerate in the absence of in‐plane cylindrical symmetry. Coherent nonlinear optical response of excitons and biexcitons in quantum dots coupled to phonons

A. Krügel, V. M. Axt, T. Kühn +2 more

Abstract Four wave mixing signals from single dots and dot ensembles involving excitonic and biexcitonic transitions are discussed. The results have been obtained analytically from a four level dot model coupled to longitudinal acoustic phonons. Time integrated four wave mixing amplitudes for quantum dot ensembles exhibit polarization dependent quantum beats that have already been found in experimental data. In four wave mixing signals of single quantum dots we find that the ground state to exciton transition has two contributions. One is identical to the known solution of the two level quantum dot model and leads to symmetric spectra for longer delay times, while the other comprises phase information from the biexciton and results in asymmetric spectra. Two‐photon processes in quantum dots: biexciton Rabi oscillations and exciton polarization flipping

Paweł Machnikowski

Abstract The paper discusses two‐photon Rabi oscillations between the ground state of a quantum dot and the biexciton state, as well as two‐photon oscillations between the two single‐exciton states with different circular polarizations. The effect of phonon‐induced decoherence on these processes is also described. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Four‐wave mixing optical response of an ensemble of quantum dot molecules

Anna Sitek, Paweł Machnikowski

Abstract Four‐wave mixing (FWM) optical response from a sample containing a non‐homogeneously broadened ensemble of vertically stacked pairs of quantum dots is studied theoretically. The effects of collective interaction between the dots and their electromagnetic environment are analyzed. It is shown that the shape of the FWM echo is affected by the coupling between the two dots and, to some extent, by the statistics of the ensemble. In the time‐integrated signal, oscillations on picosecond delay time scale appear which lead to a reduction of the coherent response for coupled dots. For longer delays, the evolution is dominated by radiative decay, with the decay rate increasing from Γ to 2Γ(superradiance effect) as the coupling becomes stronger. Photon echo studies of biexcitons and coherences in colloidal CdSe quantum dots

Anne E. Colonna, Xiujuan Yang, Gregory D. Scholes

Abstract Nonlinear optical properties of colloidal quantum dots are studied to elucidate the significance and nature of many‐body effects. Two‐pulse photon echo studies of nanocrystalline CdSe quantum dots are reported for samples dispersed in a poly(butylmethacrylate) film (4.4 K). Oscillations are observed in the experimental data that are attributed to 1S3/21Se–2S3/21Se biexciton cohererences. Signals are simulated using a phenomenological model based on the many‐body description of the dynamics (the average polarization model). It is found that the electronic coherences and the nonlinear response originating from biexciton source terms are important, but their manifestation in the photon echo signals is strongly influenced by the interplay between homogeneous and inhomogeneous line broadening. Ultralong Dephasing Time in InGaAs Quantum Dots

Paola Borri, W. Langbein, Stephan Schneider +4 more

We measure a dephasing time of several hundred picoseconds at low temperature in the ground-state transition of strongly confined InGaAs quantum dots, using a highly sensitive four-wave mixing technique. Between 7 and 100 K the polarization decay has two distinct components resulting in a non-Lorentzian line shape with a lifetime-limited zero-phonon line and a broadband from elastic exciton-acoustic phonon interactions.
