Abstract

Abstract We report the excitonic Rabi oscillations in self assembled quantum dots observed by photon echo spectroscopy. The amplitude of the observed Rabi oscillations increases with the pulse area, which is different from the results of previous reports. A numerical calculation of the Rabi oscillations including the local field effect in a quantum dot well reproduces the experimental oscillations, indicating that the local field effect is one of the important origins of the modification of the Rabi oscillations in quantum dots (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Excitonic Rabi oscillations in self-assembled quantum dots in the presence of a local field effect

Kenta Asakura, Yasuyoshi Mitsumori, Hideo Kosaka +5 more

We experimentally studied the excitonic Rabi oscillations in self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots using two-pulse photon echo spectroscopy. We observed the change in the shape of the Rabi oscillations by the second pulse intensity. Our experimental results were systematically reproduced by numerical calculations taking into account the local field effect arising from the Coulomb interaction between photoinduced charge densities in a quantum dot. Our experimental findings indicated that the local field effect contributes considerably to the coherent optical responses of the excitons in quantum dots.

Strong light‐matter coupling in a quantum dot: local field effects

Gregory Ya. Slepyan, A. Magyarov, С. А. Максименко +2 more

Manifestation of local fields in excitonic Rabi oscillations in an isolated arbitrary shaped quantum dot (QD) has been theoretically investigated. Interaction of QD with harmonic electromagnetic field as well as with ultrashort optical pulse has been considered. Bifurcation and anharmonism in the Rabi oscillations in a QD are predicted. Step-like transitions of the inversion as a function of peak pulse strength are demonstrated to be observable in a QD exposed to a Gaussian pulse. (© 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Ensemble effect on Rabi oscillations of excitons in quantum dots

Mamiko Kujiraoka, Junko Ishi‐Hayase, Kouichi Akahane +3 more

Abstract We observed excitonic Rabi oscillations (ROs) in quantum dots (QDs) by four‐wave mixing (FWM) and pump‐probe techniques. When a large number of QDs are excited by a spatially nonuniform laser, the inhomogeneous distribution of the transition dipole moments of the QD excitons and the spatial distribution of the input electric field induce distribution of the Rabi frequencies. We investigated this ensemble effect on the ROs of the excitonic polarization and the excitonic population observed in the FWM and pump‐probe signals. By calculating the FWM and pump‐probe signals including the Gaussian distribution of the pulse area, we first showed that a part of the ensemble effect can be cancelled out only in case of the ROs of the excitonic polarization. This reflects the differences between the characteristics of excitonic polarization and population. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Two‐photon processes in quantum dots: biexciton Rabi oscillations and exciton polarization flipping

Paweł Machnikowski

Abstract The paper discusses two‐photon Rabi oscillations between the ground state of a quantum dot and the biexciton state, as well as two‐photon oscillations between the two single‐exciton states with different circular polarizations. The effect of phonon‐induced decoherence on these processes is also described. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Macroscopic response of Rabi oscillations in a quantum dot ensemble

S. Mitsutake, Mamiko Kujiraoka, Junko Ishi‐Hayase +4 more

Abstract We numerically investigated optical Rabi oscillations of excitonic polarization in a quantum dot ensemble, taking into consideration the spatial distribution of both the excitation electric field and the coherent signal field. We show that the spatial distributions of the signal fields change drastically by increasing the pulse area for excitation pulses with a Gaussian spatial distribution. We found that the ensemble average of the signal intensity is affected by the size of the aperture located in front of the detector, depending on the spatial distribution of the signals on the detector. Coherent control of ground state excitons in the nonlinear regime within an ensemble of self‐assembled InAs quantum dots

Thomas Moldaschl, Thomas G. Muller, Sebastian Golka +3 more

Abstract In this work femtosecond spectral hole burning spectroscopy is used to resonantly excite ground state excitons in an ensemble of self‐assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots with a strong pump pulse. Two fundamental coherent nonlinear effects are observed with the aid of the intrinsic time‐ and frequency resolution of the setup: The low temperature Rabi oscillation of the two‐level system associated with the excitonic ground state transition and the observation of two‐photon absorption in the surrounding GaAs crystal matrix. The emergence of the latter effect also infers the existence of charged excitons in the nominally undoped QD sample, backed up by the observation of additional spectral holes next to the excitonic transitions.
