Abstract

A new type of compact magnesium cell with room-temperature walls have been developed for high resolution spectroscopy on the Mg 1S0-3P1 intercombination line. Saturation resonances with a FWHM of 1.3.MHz have been detected in this cell in the fluorescence signal. The time selection method was applied to eliminate the background signal caused by the scattering of laser beams on cell windows. The signal-to-background ratio drastically increased by the spatial localization of excited atoms owing to collisions with atoms of a low-pressure inert gas.

Spectroscopy of the Mg1S0—3P1intercombination transition in a luminescent cell with walls at room temperature

Absorption at the 1 S 0 — 3 P 1 intercombination transition in magnesium atoms is studied experimentally. The saturated absorption resonance of thermal magnesium atoms in a compact low-pressure absorption cell with walls at room temperature was recorded for the first time by using the spatial trapping of excited magnesium atoms in the detection region and the time separation of luminescence excitation and detection.

Continuous-wave laser spectroscopy of the triplet manifold of magnesium

Jerry A. Gelbwachs

We have developed incoherent multiphoton techniques that use single-frequency cw lasers to perform spectroscopic studies on the triplet manifold of magnesium. Access to the triplet manifold is accomplished by use of a buffer gas contained within the vapor cell. It serves the purpose of collisionally redistributing population among the numerous velocity subgroups associated with the long-lived intercombination line. In this manner, the entire atomic ensemble can interact with a cw narrowband laser tuned to intercombination line thereby producing a large density of metastable triplets.

Precision spectroscopy of Mg atoms in a magneto-optical trap

We report the results of experimental investigations aimed at creation of the optical frequency standard based on magnesium atoms cooled and localised in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). An experimentally realised MOT for magnesium made it possible to obtain a cloud comprising atoms at a temperature of . The results of ultra-high resolution spectroscopy of intercombination transition for Mg atom are presented, the resonances in time-domain separated optical fields with the half-width of are recorded, which corresponds to the -factor of the reference line .

High-temperature calcium vapor cell construction and spectroscopy

N. Lemke, Kyle W. Martin, Jarom Jackson +3 more

We describe the construction, operation, and resulting spectroscopy of a high-temperature calcium vapor cell using the 657 nm intercombination transition in neutral calcium. Alkali contaminants inside the cell resulted in the emission of off-resonant fluorescence. The resulting lifetime of the3P1state in calcium atoms subjected to collisions with the contaminant vapor is quantified.

Sub-Kilohertz Optical Spectroscopy with a Time Domain Atom Interferometer

F. Ruschewitz, Jin-Long Peng, H. Hinderthür +3 more

We report on the sub-kilohertz optical spectroscopy on the $^{1}S_{0}$- $^{3}P_{1}$ intercombination transition in magnesium at 457 nm. The spectroscopic signal is probed by a time domain atom interferometer. The realization of this time domain atom interferometer with laser cooled and trapped atoms allows extremely long interaction times and leads to resolutions down to 491 Hz (FWHM). This corresponds to a high line $Q$ factor of $1.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{12}$. Because of the high accuracy in the determination of the line center, applications with respect to an optical frequency standard are possible.

Study of saturated-absorption resonances on the 3P0, 1, 2 – 3D1, 2, 3 transitions of magnesium atoms in a hollow-cathode discharge cell

Andrei Goncharov, O.A. Klimacheva, A.O. Mel’nikova

Abstract The saturated-absorption resonances on the 3P0, 1, 2 – 3D1, 2, 3 transitions of magnesium atoms in a hollow-cathode discharge cell are studied. The line width (FWHM) for the observed saturated-absorption resonance on the 33P0 → 33D1 transition turns out to be ∼220 MHz. Experiments are performed using a system based on a 766-nm diode laser with amplification and frequency doubling in a nonlinear BiBO crystal. The results obtained are of interest for sub-Doppler cooling on the 33P2 → 33D3 transition.
