Abstract

We investigated the manifestation of Rabi oscillation in the coherent dynamics of excitons in self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots. The Rabi oscillation phenomenon was directly observed as a function of the input pulse area. Furthermore, by performing wave packet interferometry in the nonlinear excitation regime, we discover a new type of quantum interference phenomenon, resulting from the interplay between Rabi oscillation and quantum interference.

Interplay of Rabi oscillation and quantum interference in semiconductor quantum dots

Summary form only given. We present direct experimental evidence of Rabi oscillation (RO) in individual self-assembled quantum dots (SAQDs) and experimental observation of a new quantum interference (QI) phenomenon. Our detailed theoretical investigations attribute this phenomenon to the coherent dynamics resulting from the interplay between RO and QI. We conduct experiments on an In/sub 0.5/Ga/sub 0.5/As SAQD, which can be considered as a three level system To study the interplay of RO and QI, we perform single dot wavepacket interferometry measurements in the strong excitation regime.

Excitonic Rabi oscillations in self-assembled quantum dots in the presence of a local field effect

Kenta Asakura, Yasuyoshi Mitsumori, Hideo Kosaka +5 more

We experimentally studied the excitonic Rabi oscillations in self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots using two-pulse photon echo spectroscopy. We observed the change in the shape of the Rabi oscillations by the second pulse intensity. Our experimental results were systematically reproduced by numerical calculations taking into account the local field effect arising from the Coulomb interaction between photoinduced charge densities in a quantum dot. Our experimental findings indicated that the local field effect contributes considerably to the coherent optical responses of the excitons in quantum dots.

Theory of excitonic Rabi flopping and quantum interference in single quantum dots

T. Takagahara

Summary form only given. Semiconductor quantum dots are attracting much interest as a candidate to implement the quantum information processing and the quantum computation. In order to examine the possibility of the quantum state manipulation, we study the excitonic Rabi flopping and a new type of quantum interference phenomena in semiconductor quantum dots. One of the most striking manifestation of the quantum coherence is the Rabi flopping. The observation of the excitonic Rabi splitting in an InGaAs quantum dot was reported recently. Under the strong excitation of an excited exciton state in a single quantum dot, the luminescence from the exciton ground state shows a doublet splitting. This splitting can be interpreted in the dressed exciton picture. Namely, under the strong and resonant excitation of a particular exciton state, the ground state of the system splits into two levels. Then the transition from the exciton ground state to the split ground state results in the doublet structure of the emission spectrum.

Depolarization-induced modification of Rabi oscillations in a semiconductor quantum dot

A. Magyarov, Gregory Ya. Slepyan, С. А. Максименко

A theory of the nonlinear interaction between a single quantum dot (QD) and electromagnetic fields, accounting the QD-depolarization (local-field) has been developed. QD excitation by classical and quantum electromagnetic fields such as coherent state of light, Fock qubit and gaussian excitation has been considered. As a result, for the case of the QD illuminated by coherent states of light, we predict the appearance of two oscillatory regimes in the Rabi oscillations. In the first one, signatures of Rabi oscillations are found to be suppressed: the population inversion is negative and the conventional collapse-revivals phenomenon is absent, while in the second one the collapse and revivals are appeared, showing significant difference as compared to those predicted within the standard Jaynes-Cummins theory. Under the pulsed excitation, Rabi oscillation dynamics is found to be strongly depended on the input pulse area and duration.

Optical Rabi Oscillations in a Quantum Dot Ensemble

Mamiko Kujiraoka, Junko Ishi‐Hayase, Kouichi Akahane +3 more

We have investigated Rabi oscillations of exciton polarization in a self-assembled InAs quantum dot ensemble. The four-wave mixing signals measured as a function of the average of the pulse area showed the large in-plane anisotropy and nonharmonic oscillations. The experimental results can be well reproduced by a two-level model calculation including three types of inhomogeneities without any fitting parameter. The large anisotropy can be well explained by the anisotropic dipole moments. We also find that the nonharmonic behaviors partly originate from the polarization interference.

Excitonic Rabi oscillations in self‐assembled quantum dots studied by photon echoes

Kenta Asakura, Yasuyoshi Mitsumori, Hideo Kosaka +5 more

Abstract We report the excitonic Rabi oscillations in self assembled quantum dots observed by photon echo spectroscopy. The amplitude of the observed Rabi oscillations increases with the pulse area, which is different from the results of previous reports. A numerical calculation of the Rabi oscillations including the local field effect in a quantum dot well reproduces the experimental oscillations, indicating that the local field effect is one of the important origins of the modification of the Rabi oscillations in quantum dots (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
