Abstract

We have investigated Rabi oscillations of exciton polarization in a self-assembled InAs quantum dot ensemble. The four-wave mixing signals measured as a function of the average of the pulse area showed the large in-plane anisotropy and nonharmonic oscillations. The experimental results can be well reproduced by a two-level model calculation including three types of inhomogeneities without any fitting parameter. The large anisotropy can be well explained by the anisotropic dipole moments. We also find that the nonharmonic behaviors partly originate from the polarization interference.

Excitonic Rabi Oscillations in a Strain-compensated Quantum Dot Ensemble

We present experimental measurements and theoretical analysis of Rabi oscillations of the exciton polarization in a strain‐compensated InAs quantum dot ensemble. We observed the non‐harmonic oscillations of the ensemble averaged four‐wave mixing signal intensities measured as a function of the averaged pulse area of an excitation pulse. The experimental results can be well reproduced by calculations considering the effect of the inhomogeneities of the detuning, the transition dipole moment, and the electric field amplitude without any fitting parameters.

Polarization-dependent Rabi oscillations in single InGaAs quantum dots

Lucien Besombes, Jeremy J. Baumberg, Junichi Motohisa

Measurements of optical Rabi oscillations in the excited states of individual InGaAs are presented. Under pulsed resonant excitation we observe Rabi oscillations with increasing pulse area, which are damped after the first maximum and minimum. We show that the observed damping comes from an additional non-resonant generation of carriers in the quantum dot. The observation of Rabi oscillations provides an efficient way of directly measuring the excitonic transitions' dipole moments. A polarization anisotropy of the dipole moment is resolved in some of the quantum dots.

Ensemble effect on Rabi oscillations of excitons in quantum dots

Mamiko Kujiraoka, Junko Ishi‐Hayase, Kouichi Akahane +3 more

Abstract We observed excitonic Rabi oscillations (ROs) in quantum dots (QDs) by four‐wave mixing (FWM) and pump‐probe techniques. When a large number of QDs are excited by a spatially nonuniform laser, the inhomogeneous distribution of the transition dipole moments of the QD excitons and the spatial distribution of the input electric field induce distribution of the Rabi frequencies. We investigated this ensemble effect on the ROs of the excitonic polarization and the excitonic population observed in the FWM and pump‐probe signals. By calculating the FWM and pump‐probe signals including the Gaussian distribution of the pulse area, we first showed that a part of the ensemble effect can be cancelled out only in case of the ROs of the excitonic polarization. This reflects the differences between the characteristics of excitonic polarization and population. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Interplay of Rabi Oscillations and Quantum Interference in Semiconductor Quantum Dots

Han Htoon, T. Takagahara, D. Kulik +3 more

We investigated the manifestation of Rabi oscillation in the coherent dynamics of excitons in self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots. The Rabi oscillation phenomenon was directly observed as a function of the input pulse area. Furthermore, by performing wave packet interferometry in the nonlinear excitation regime, we discover a new type of quantum interference phenomenon, resulting from the interplay between Rabi oscillation and quantum interference.

Rabi oscillations in the excitonic ground-state transition of InGaAs quantum dots

Paola Borri, W. Langbein, Stephan Schneider +4 more

We present measurements and calculations of optical Rabi oscillations in the excitonic ground-state transition of an InGaAs quantum dot ensemble at low temperature. Rabi oscillations which are damped versus pulse area and change period when changing pulse duration are observed. Comparisons with calculations show that the observed damping is not intrinsic to a single dot. Dephasing processes and the biexciton resonance change the amplitude and the period of the oscillations, respectively, while the damping versus pulse area is due to a distribution of transition dipole moments in the ensemble.

Macroscopic response of Rabi oscillations in a quantum dot ensemble

Abstract We numerically investigated optical Rabi oscillations of excitonic polarization in a quantum dot ensemble, taking into consideration the spatial distribution of both the excitation electric field and the coherent signal field. We show that the spatial distributions of the signal fields change drastically by increasing the pulse area for excitation pulses with a Gaussian spatial distribution. We found that the ensemble average of the signal intensity is affected by the size of the aperture located in front of the detector, depending on the spatial distribution of the signals on the detector.
