Abstract

In this presentation, we observed the coherent optical nonlinear interaction of exciton in a single InAs/GaAs self-assembled QD by using coherent control technique at the wavelength 1127 nm, 4.2 K. Due to the large diameter of InAs QDs in the longer wavelength range, dipole moment of confined excitons is predicted to be large so that coherent optical interaction such as Rabi oscillation is expected to be observed. Large dipole moment is one of the most important criteria to realize strong interaction between photons and excitons in QDs.

Optical Control of Excitons in a Pair of Quantum Dots Coupled by the Dipole-Dipole Interaction

Thomas Unold, Kerstin Mueller, Christoph Lienau +2 more

We demonstrate coherent nonlinear-optical control of excitons in a pair of quantum dots (QDs) coupled via dipolar interaction. The single-exciton population in the first QD is controlled by resonant picosecond excitation, giving rise to Rabi oscillations. As a result, the exciton transition in the second QD is spectrally shifted and concomitant Rabi oscillations are observed. We identify coupling between permanent excitonic dipole moments as the dominant interaction mechanism, whereas quasiresonant (Förster) energy transfer is weak. Such control schemes based on dipolar interaction are a prerequisite for realizing scalable quantum logic gates.

Rabi Oscillations of Excitons in Single Quantum Dots

Todd H. Stievater, Xiaoqin Li, Duncan G. Steel +5 more

Transient nonlinear optical spectroscopy, performed on excitons confined to single GaAs quantum dots, shows oscillations that are analogous to Rabi oscillations in two-level atomic systems. This demonstration corresponds to a one-qubit rotation in a single quantum dot which is important for proposals using quantum dot excitons for quantum computing. The dipole moment inferred from the data is consistent with that directly obtained from linear absorption studies. The measurement extends the artificial atom model of quantum dot excitonic transitions into the strong-field limit, and makes possible full coherent optical control of the quantum state of single excitons using optical pi pulses.

Coherent Nonlinear Effects in Single Quantum Dots

Hidehiko Kamada, Hideki Gotoh, Stephen Hughes

Optical nonlinear behaviors in single dot exciton pair system are discussed. Due to large two-exciton dipole moment and substantial two-exciton correlation, marked nonlinear responses are expected to emerge. Discussions are given to a case of two excitons in a QD and that of two excitons in two QDs.

Deterministic Photon Pairs and Coherent Optical Control of a Single Quantum Dot

Harishankar Jayakumar, Ana Predojević, Tobias Huber +3 more

The strong confinement of semiconductor excitons in a quantum dot gives rise to atomlike behavior. The full benefit of such a structure is best observed in resonant excitation where the excited state can be deterministically populated and coherently manipulated. Because of the large refractive index and device geometry it remains challenging to observe resonantly excited emission that is free from laser scattering in III/V self-assembled quantum dots. Here we exploit the biexciton binding energy to create an extremely clean single photon source via two-photon resonant excitation of an InAs/GaAs quantum dot. We observe complete suppression of the excitation laser and multiphoton emissions. Additionally, we perform full coherent control of the ground-biexciton state qubit and observe an extended coherence time using an all-optical echo technique. The deterministic coherent photon pair creation makes this system suitable for the generation of time-bin entanglement and experiments on the interaction of photons from dissimilar sources.

Nonlinear Rabi Oscillations of Excitons in Dense Quantum Dot System

Yasuyoshi Mitsumori, Atsushi Hasegawa, Sasaki, M. +2 more

Nonlinear optical response and optical coherence of excitons in semiconductor dense quantum dots in GaAs single quantum wells has been studied by using photon echo techniques. At low temperatures, the optical coherence is estimated to be 2 ns from the decay curve in the photon echo signal. Rabi oscillations are also observed. Unlike the results for a single quantum dot in the literature to date, the oscillation shows nonlinear behavior affected strongly by the pre-excited carrier density. The results can be explained by the theory of the local field correction originating from exciton-exciton interaction between the inter dots.

Coherent Control of Exciton in a Single Quantum Dot Using High-Resolution Michelson Interferometer

Takumi Okada, Kazuhiro Komori, Keishiro Goshima +6 more

We developed a high-resolution Michelson interferometer with a He–Ne two-frequency laser positioning system, and measured the coherent carrier dynamics of a single InAs self-assembled quantum dot (SAQD) using a micro-spectroscopy system. The phase-locked double pulses were stabilized, with the maximum deviation being below 10 nm during the long measurement time of 1 h. Using this system, coherent control of an exciton in an InAs SAQD with very fine phase stabilization was demonstrated. The dephasing time of the single quantum dots was 9.5 ps which is close to that estimated from the homogeneous linewidth in the photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectrum.
