Abstract

Nonlinear optical response and optical coherence of excitons in semiconductor dense quantum dots in GaAs single quantum wells has been studied by using photon echo techniques. At low temperatures, the optical coherence is estimated to be 2 ns from the decay curve in the photon echo signal. Rabi oscillations are also observed. Unlike the results for a single quantum dot in the literature to date, the oscillation shows nonlinear behavior affected strongly by the pre-excited carrier density. The results can be explained by the theory of the local field correction originating from exciton-exciton interaction between the inter dots.

Anomalous photon echoes and Rabi oscillations of quantum dot excitons

Optical coherence time and nonlinear optical response of excitons localized to quantum dots in a GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum well are investigated by the three-pulse photon echo technique. At low temperature, the optical coherence time is estimated to be 1.8 ns from the decay curve of the photon echo signal. The decay profile for short time delay shows the strong dependence on the input pulse area of the third pulse. Rabi oscillations are also observed. The oscillations exhibit nonlinear behavior, which is affected by the pre-excited polarization. Such behavior can be qualitatively explained by the local field effect due to the exciton-exciton interaction between the excitons.

Local field effect on Rabi oscillations of excitons localized to quantum islands in a single quantum well

Nonlinear optical response and optical coherence time of excitons localized to quantum islands in a $\mathrm{Ga}\mathrm{As}∕\mathrm{Al}\mathrm{Ga}\mathrm{As}$ single quantum well are studied by the three-pulse photon echo technique. At low temperature, the optical coherence time is estimated to be $1.8\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ns}$ from the decay of the photon echo signal. The decay profile for short time delay shows the strong dependence on the input pulse area of the third pulse. Rabi oscillations are also observed. The oscillations show nonlinear behavior affected by the pre-excited polarization. Such behavior can be qualitatively explained by the local field effect due to the exciton-exciton interaction between the localized excitons.

Strong-field nonlinear response of quantum dots

Todd H. Stievater, Anthony S. Lenihan, Duncan G. Steel +3 more

Summary form only given. Recent studies have been carried out on the resonant response from single interface fluctuation quantum dots. Such a discrete-level model yields unique signatures under strong resonant driving, including Rabi oscillations. To date, Rabi oscillations (excluding microcavity studies) have only been reported for two-dimensional excitonic systems. We present data showing the nonlinear response from an ensemble of interface fluctuation quantum dots. This data is consistent with Rabi oscillations for moderate driving fields (that is, for /spl Theta//spl sim/2/spl pi/, where /spl Theta/ is the pulse area). The sample under investigation is a single thin (62 /spl Aring/) GaAs/Al/sub 0.3/Ga/sub 0.7/As quantum well grown with growth interruptions and is studied at 5 K. The laser is tuned to the lower energy excitonic resonance, corresponding to an inhomogeneously broadened distribution of excitons localized due to well width fluctuations. The time-integrated PL is collected with a spectrometer tuned 2.5 meV below the excitonic resonance.

Excitonic Rabi oscillations in self-assembled quantum dots in the presence of a local field effect

Kenta Asakura, Yasuyoshi Mitsumori, Hideo Kosaka +5 more

We experimentally studied the excitonic Rabi oscillations in self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots using two-pulse photon echo spectroscopy. We observed the change in the shape of the Rabi oscillations by the second pulse intensity. Our experimental results were systematically reproduced by numerical calculations taking into account the local field effect arising from the Coulomb interaction between photoinduced charge densities in a quantum dot. Our experimental findings indicated that the local field effect contributes considerably to the coherent optical responses of the excitons in quantum dots.

Rabi Oscillations of Excitons in Single Quantum Dots

Todd H. Stievater, Xiaoqin Li, Duncan G. Steel +5 more

Transient nonlinear optical spectroscopy, performed on excitons confined to single GaAs quantum dots, shows oscillations that are analogous to Rabi oscillations in two-level atomic systems. This demonstration corresponds to a one-qubit rotation in a single quantum dot which is important for proposals using quantum dot excitons for quantum computing. The dipole moment inferred from the data is consistent with that directly obtained from linear absorption studies. The measurement extends the artificial atom model of quantum dot excitonic transitions into the strong-field limit, and makes possible full coherent optical control of the quantum state of single excitons using optical pi pulses.

Coherent control of exciton in a single InAs/GaAs quantum dot

Shunsuke Kono, Akihisa Tomita, Junichi Fujikata +2 more

In this presentation, we observed the coherent optical nonlinear interaction of exciton in a single InAs/GaAs self-assembled QD by using coherent control technique at the wavelength 1127 nm, 4.2 K. Due to the large diameter of InAs QDs in the longer wavelength range, dipole moment of confined excitons is predicted to be large so that coherent optical interaction such as Rabi oscillation is expected to be observed. Large dipole moment is one of the most important criteria to realize strong interaction between photons and excitons in QDs.
