A magas spinű rendszerekben újfajta, egzotikus szuperfolyékony fázisok megjelenésére mutattunk rá mágnesesen polarizáció jelenlétében, és javaslatot tettünk annak kísérleti megfigyelhetőségére ultrahideg atomok rendszerében. A vezetési elektronok közötti korrelációkat is tartalmazó periodikus Anderson-Hubbard-modell esetén a Hubbard-fizika (Mott-átalakulás) és a Kondo-fizika (nehézfermionos viselkedés) versengésében határoztuk meg a kölcsönhatások szerepét. A Bethe-feltevéssel egzaktul megoldható rendszerekre analitikusan levezettük a szabadenergiához adódó vezető korrekciókat. | The physics of low-dimensional magnetic and fermionic systems is in the forefront of research in solid state physics. During the course of this project, we studied the physical properties of such systems both analytically and numerically, investing a lot of effort in the algorithmic development of the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method, using the concepts of quantum information theory. This allowed us, by combining DMRG with Wilson's numerical RG procedure, to extend the method to impurity problems. Following our research plan, we determined the phase diagram of various models, such as spin ladders, generalized Hubbard models and SU(n) symmetric models, and studied the quantum phase transitions in these systems. We have pointed out the possibility of exotic superfluid phases in magnetically polarized high-spin systems, and proposed experiments for their observation in ultracold atomic gases. We have studied the competition of Hubbard physics (Mott transition) and Kondo physics (heavy-fermion behavior) in extended periodic Anderson-Hubbard models, where correlations between conduction electrons and the interaction between conduction and localized electrons are taken into account. We have also determined the leading corrections to the free energy of exactly integrable systems.
Jelentős lépést tettünk a racionális konform térelméletek osztályozása felé. A környezeti áramlások témakörében a Kármán Laboratórium aktív kutatóhellyé fejlődött. A frontoktól kezdve a ciklonképződésig számos kísérletet végeztünk. Kiemelendő, hogy egy forgókádbeli turbulenciában a hőmérséklet fluktuációinak statisztikája reprodukálja a földi meteorológiai állomások adataiét. A kísérletek a klímaváltozás vizsgálatában is ígéretesek. A pályázati időszakban 21 doktorandusz témavezetését láttuk el. | Our result - published also in Nature - on finite temperature field theories states that the quark-hadronic matter transition after the Big Bang happened continuously, not like a phase transition. We determined the characteristic crossover temperature using lattice field theoretical methods. Integrable field theories have applications from condensed matter physics to open string theory to particle physics. We made a major step towards the classification of rational conformal field theories. In statistical physics special attention has been payed to fronts, a phenomenon in far from equilibrium systems. We described and controlled motion and shapes of fronts in chemical, biological, and magnetic systems. Extreme statistics of physical quantities is a new area also important from the viewpoint of applications, where we determined the distribution of maxima in transport phenomena and in quantities characterizing fluctuations of 1/f-type noises. Several breakthroughs were achieved by means of statistical physical studies in dislocation systems. As to the topic of environmental flows, the von Karman Laboratory has become an active research unit where experiments ranging from fronts to cyclone-genesis have been carried out. As a highlight, in the turbulence from a rotating tank the statistics of temperature fluctuations reproduced that of data from meteorological stations. The experiments are promising for studies in climate change. In the grant period we supervised 21 PhD students.
Among others, the research project resulted in 11 Physical Review Letters, one Physical Review X, one Nanoscale, and 39 Physical Review publications. Eleven students were integrated into this project, and their devoted research resulted so far in 7 (awarded) student's research project (TDK), 4 BSc theses, 4 MSc theses, and 3 PhD dissertations.
Csapdába zárt Bose részecskék kondenzációját vizsgáltam kölcsönhatás jelenlétében. Megmutattam, hogy viszonylag gyenge, de realisztikus külcsönhatás mellett a szabad gáz alapállapota minden hőmérsékleten makroszkopikusan betöltött. Valamivel erősebb kölcsönhatásra valamivel gyengébb eredményt - 100 %-os általánosított kondenzációt -bizonyítottam egydimenziós Bose gázban. Korrelációs egyenlőtlenségeket vezettem le a betöltési számokra szabad Bose rendszerekben. Bizonyítást adtam arra, hogy homogén Bose rendszerben a mértékinvariancia spontán sérülése ekvivalens a Bose kondenzációval. Kristályos alapállapot létezését igazoltam klasszikus részecskék rendszerében a párkölcsönhatások egy osztályára. Egydimenziós diszkrét Schrödinger operátorok egy osztályára társszerzőimmel alsó becslést adtunk egy hullámcsomag szétterülési sebességére. Oszlányi Gáborral kidolgoztunk egy ab initio eljárást röntgendiffrakciós mérési adatokból kiinduló szerkezetmeghatározásra. | Condensation of trapped bosons in the presence of interaction was studied. It was shown that for weak but realistic interactions the ground state of the free Bose gas is still macroscopically occupied at any temperature. Somewhat stronger interactions were shown to lead, in one dimension, to a somewhat weaker result: a 100 % generalized condensation. Correlation inequalities for occupation numbers in free Bose gases were derived. In homogenous Bose systems Bose condensation was proven to be equivalent to the spontaneous breakdown of the gauge symmetry. Existence of crystalline ground states was shown for a class of classical pair interactions. In a collaboration, for a family of one dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators a lower bound was derived for the decay rate of a wave packet. With Gábor Oszlányi, we elaborated an ab initio method for structure solution, starting with X-ray diffraction data.
A pályázat keretében nagy szabadsági fokú fizikai rendszerek kooperatív viselkedését vizsgáltuk rendezetlenség jelenlétében. | Within the project the cooperative behavior of physical systems with large degree of freedom is studied in the presence of disorder. We have determined the properties of singularities (phase transitions, Griffiths effects) and studied both equilibrium and nonequilibrium processes. For disordered quantum systems we have continued our studies on the use of the strong disorder renormalization group method to obtain the phase diagram and low energy excitations of different one- and two-dimensional systems. We have also obtained new results about entanglement of quantum systems and the related von Neumann entropy. For nonequilibrium systems we have studied ageing during nonequilibrium critical relaxation, as well as driven lattice gas systems in the presence of disorder. Finally, in the third field of disorder dominated classical systems we have studied phase transitions and the related geometrical problems of clusters. Our results obtained during this project have been published in 29 papers in international journals and for these we have already obtained more than 130 citations. During the project 1 PhD dissertation has been succesfully defended and two others are submitted for defence.
Munkánk elvezetett a rezonátoros kvantumelektrodinamika alapmodelljének több irányú kiterjesztéséhez, és más aktív kutatási területhez kapcsolásához. Az erős atom-fény csatolást bevezettük a Bose-Einstein kondenzátumok fizikájába. Először átlagtérelmélettel és lineáris zajanalízissel felderítettük a csatolt anyag-, és fényhullámok hibrid rendszerét. Kifejlesztettünk effektív modelleket, amelyek számot adnak a kvantumstatisztikai tulajdonságokról, sőt, még dinamikai jelenségekről is. A térbeli önszerveződés nemegyensúlyi fázisátalakítását elemeztük részletesen. At ETH csoportjában végzett kísérletek igazolták néhány jóslatunkat. A szórási megközelítés sikeresnek bizonyult szabad térben megfigyelhető, kollektív atomi jelenségek feltárásában is. Rev. Lett. van. 7 meghívott konferenciaelőadást tartottunk. | This project has led to the extension of the basic cavity QED model in various directions, connecting it to other very active research fields. First of all, the strong atom-field coupling has been incorporated to the physics of Bose-Einstein condensates. The composite, hybrid system of coupled matter and light waves was explored, first, by mean field theory and linearized fluctuation analysis. We developed effective models accounting for quantum statistical features, too, even for dynamical effects. The non-equilibrium phase transition of spatial self-organization was analysed in detail. Experimental observations in the ETH group verified some of our predictions. We established a link between cavity QED and the standard opto-mechanical model. This latter is a hot topic with the promise of observing quantum effects in the kinematics of massive, mesoscopic mirrors. We described them in a uniform framework, as being the two extremes of the same scattering model. This scattering approach proved to be useful also in studying collective atomic effects in free space. We went beyond the standard picture of optical lattices: we found corrections to the optical dipole potential due to back-action on the field and showed that many-body excitations in the form of density waves can be excited in an optical lattice. We published altogether 21 papers, among which there are 6 Phys.Rev. Letters. We presented 7 invited conference talks.
