Abstract

Conformal invariance often accompanies criticality in Hermitian systems. However, its fate in non-Hermitian settings is less clear, especially near exceptional points where the Hamiltonian becomes non-diagonalizable. Here we investigate whether a 1+1-dimensional gapless non-Hermitian system can admit a conformal description, focusing on a PT-symmetric free-fermion field theory. Working in the biorthogonal formalism, we identify the conformal structure of this theory by constructing a traceless energy-momentum tensor whose Fourier modes generate a Virasoro algebra with central charge $c=-2$. This yields a non-Hermitian, biorthogonal realization of a logarithmic conformal field theory, in which correlation functions exhibit logarithmic scaling and the spectrum forms Virasoro staggered modules that are characterized by universal indecomposability parameters. We further present a microscopic construction and show how the same conformal data (with finite-size corrections) can be extracted from the lattice model at exceptional-point criticality, thereby supporting the field-theory prediction.

$c=-2$ conformal field theory in quadratic band touching

Rintaro Masaoka

Quadratic band touching in fermionic systems defines a universality class distinct from that of linear Dirac points, yet its characterization as a quantum critical point remains incomplete. In this work, I show that a $(d+1)$-dimensional free-fermion model with quadratic band touching exhibits spatial conformal invariance, and that its equal-time ground-state correlation functions are exactly captured by the $d$-dimensional symplectic fermion theory. I establish this correspondence by constructing explicit mappings between physical fermionic operators and the fields of the symplectic fermion theory. I further explore the implications of this correspondence in two spatial dimensions, where the symplectic fermion theory is a logarithmic conformal field theory with central charge $c=-2$. In the corresponding $(2+1)$-dimensional systems, I identify anyonic excitations originating from the underlying symplectic fermion theory, even though the Hamiltonian is gapless. Transporting these excitations along non-contractible loops generates transitions among topologically degenerate ground states, in close analogy with those in topologically ordered phases. Moreover, the action of a $2π$ rotation on these excitations is represented by a Jordan block, reflecting the logarithmic character of the associated conformal field theory.

Universal non-Hermitian flow in one-dimensional PT-symmetric quantum criticalities

Xin-Chi Zhou, Ke Wang

The critical point of a topological phase transition is described by a conformal field theory (CFT), where the finite-size corrections to the ground state energy are uniquely related to its central charge. We study the finite-size scaling of the energy of non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with parity and time-reversal symmetry ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry. We find that under open boundary condition (OBC), the energy scaling $E(L)\sim c/L$ reveals a negative central charge $c=-2$ at the non-Hermitian critical point, indicative of a non-unitary CFT. Furthermore, we discover a universal scaling function capturing the flow of a system from Dirac CFT with $c=1$ to a non-unitary CFT with $c=-2$. The scaling function demonstrates distinct behaviors at topologically non-trivial and trivial sides of critical points. Notably, within the realm of topological criticality, the scaling function exhibits an universal rise-dip-rise pattern, manifesting a characteristic singularity inherent in the non-Hermitian topological critical points. The analytic expression of the scaling function has been derived and is in good agreement with the numerical results.

Emergence of conformal symmetry in critical quantum spin chains: Applying the Koo-Saleur formula to nonintegrable models

Ashley Milsted, Guifré Vidal

We study the emergence of 2D conformal symmetry in critical quantum spin chains on the finite circle. Our goal is to characterize the conformal field theory (CFT) describing the universality class of the corresponding quantum phase transition. Using only the lattice Hamiltonian $H = \sum_j h_j$ as an input, we construct operators $H_n$ (Fourier modes of the local Hamiltonian terms $h_j$) that transform the low-energy eigenstates of $H$ in the same way as certain combinations of the Virasoro generators do in the CFT. These operators were introduced for certain integrable lattice models by Koo and Saleur [Nucl. Phys. B 426, 459 (1994)]. In this paper we propose and demonstrate the use of operators $H_n$ to extract conformal data in nonintegrable quantum spin chains. In particular, we explain how to estimate the central charge from a simple ground-state expectation value and to systematically identify the low-energy states of $H$ corresponding to Virasoro primary operators, as must be done in order to identify the CFT.

Relating non-Hermitian and Hermitian quantum systems at criticality

Chang-Tse Hsieh, Po-Yao Chang

We demonstrate three types of transformations that establish connections between Hermitian and non-Hermitian quantum systems at criticality, which can be described by conformal field theories (CFTs). For the transformation preserving both the energy and the entanglement spectra, the corresponding central charges obtained from the logarithmic scaling of the entanglement entropy are identical for both Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems. The second transformation, while preserving the energy spectrum, does not perserve the entanglement spectrum. This leads to different entanglement entropy scalings and results in different central charges for the two types of systems. We demonstrate this transformation using the dilation method applied to the free fermion case. Through this method, we show that a non-Hermitian system with central charge c = -4 c = − 4 can be mapped to a Hermitian system with central charge c = 2 c = 2 . Lastly, we investigate the Galois conjugation in the Fibonacci model with the parameter \phi \to - 1/\phi ϕ → − 1 / ϕ , in which the transformation does not preserve both energy and entanglement spectra. We demonstrate the Fibonacci model and its Galois conjugation relate the tricritical Ising model/3-state Potts model and the Lee-Yang model with negative central charges from the scaling property of the entanglement entropy.

Entanglement spectrum and entropy in topological non-Hermitian systems and nonunitary conformal field theory

Po-Yao Chang, Jhih-Shih You, Xueda Wen +1 more

This paper studies the entanglement properties of free-fermion systems without hermiticity. From the entanglement entropy scaling, the authors identify the non-unitary conformal field theory with c=-2 in a PT-symmetric non-Hermitian lattice system hosting topological phases. The entanglement spectrum also can detect the topological properties in the gapped phases, including the PT-symmetric Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and the non-Hermitian Chern insulator.

Exact Solution for Non-Hermitian Free Fermions: A Case Study of the XY Chain

Yuguan Li, D. C. Liu, Murray T. Batchelor

We consider the non-Hermitian XY spin chain with open boundary conditions when the anisotropy parameter is extended to complex values. By analyzing the quasi-Hamiltonian matrix, we demonstrate that the free-fermion structure of the quasi-energy spectrum coincides with that of the Hermitian model and construct the corresponding biorthogonal fermionic basis away from exceptional points (EPs). We make use of an explicit Chebyshev-polynomial representation of the open-boundary eigenvectors in which the quasi-energy $\varepsilon$ is the natural spectral variable. This quasi-energy polynomial form is particularly useful at EPs, because EPs correspond to repeated roots of the same boundary polynomial, making the construction of generalized eigenvectors by $\varepsilon$-differentiation transparent. At EPs, where the quasi-Hamiltonian becomes defective, we derive the Jordan normal form and construct the associated generalized eigenvectors, which yields the correct counting of independent many-body eigenstates. We further show that EPs act as branch points in the complex anisotropy plane, leading to the characteristic permutation of eigenenergies and eigenstates upon encirclement. The branch-cut structure of the biorthogonal eigenstates provides direct evidence for the exchange of eigenstates when an EP is encircled. These results provide an analytically controlled many-body platform for studying EP physics and non-Hermitian topology beyond momentum-space descriptions.
