Relating non-Hermitian and Hermitian quantum systems at criticality

Abstract

We demonstrate three types of transformations that establish connections between Hermitian and non-Hermitian quantum systems at criticality, which can be described by conformal field theories (CFTs). For the transformation preserving both the energy and the entanglement spectra, the corresponding central charges obtained from the logarithmic scaling of the entanglement entropy are identical for both Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems. The second transformation, while preserving the energy spectrum, does not perserve the entanglement spectrum. This leads to different entanglement entropy scalings and results in different central charges for the two types of systems. We demonstrate this transformation using the dilation method applied to the free fermion case. Through this method, we show that a non-Hermitian system with central charge c = -4 c = − 4 can be mapped to a Hermitian system with central charge c = 2 c = 2 . Lastly, we investigate the Galois conjugation in the Fibonacci model with the parameter \phi \to - 1/\phi ϕ → − 1 / ϕ , in which the transformation does not preserve both energy and entanglement spectra. We demonstrate the Fibonacci model and its Galois conjugation relate the tricritical Ising model/3-state Potts model and the Lee-Yang model with negative central charges from the scaling property of the entanglement entropy.

Complex entanglement entropy for complex conformal field theory

Haruki Shimizu, Kohei Kawabata

Conformal field theory (CFT) conventionally possesses positive central charges and describes continuous phase transitions in quantum many-body systems. Recently, CFT with complex-valued central charges has been proposed to relate to the discontinuous phase transitions of the Potts models. Here, the authors demonstrate that the scaling of complex-valued entanglement entropy characterizes complex CFT by applying the density matrix renormalization group method to the non-Hermitian five-state Potts model. This study suggests a way to investigate the entanglement properties of complex CFT.

Non-Hermitian free-fermion critical systems and logarithmic conformal field theory

Iao-Fai Io, Fu-Hsiang Huang, Chang-Tse Hsieh

Conformal invariance often accompanies criticality in Hermitian systems. However, its fate in non-Hermitian settings is less clear, especially near exceptional points where the Hamiltonian becomes non-diagonalizable. Here we investigate whether a 1+1-dimensional gapless non-Hermitian system can admit a conformal description, focusing on a PT-symmetric free-fermion field theory. Working in the biorthogonal formalism, we identify the conformal structure of this theory by constructing a traceless energy-momentum tensor whose Fourier modes generate a Virasoro algebra with central charge $c=-2$. This yields a non-Hermitian, biorthogonal realization of a logarithmic conformal field theory, in which correlation functions exhibit logarithmic scaling and the spectrum forms Virasoro staggered modules that are characterized by universal indecomposability parameters. We further present a microscopic construction and show how the same conformal data (with finite-size corrections) can be extracted from the lattice model at exceptional-point criticality, thereby supporting the field-theory prediction.

Rényi entropies and negative central charges in non-Hermitian quantum systems

Yi-Ting Tu, Yu-Chin Tzeng, Po-Yao Chang

Quantum entanglement is one essential element to characterize many-body quantum systems. However, the entanglement measures are mostly discussed in Hermitian systems. Here, we propose a natural extension of entanglement and Rényi entropies to non-Hermitian quantum systems. There have been other proposals for the computation of these quantities, which are distinct from what is proposed in the current paper. We demonstrate the proposed entanglement quantities which are referred to as generic entanglement and Rényi entropies. These quantities capture the desired entanglement properties in non-Hermitian critical systems, where the low-energy properties are governed by the non-unitary conformal field theories (CFTs). We find excellent agreement between the numerical extrapolation of the negative central charges from the generic entanglement/Rényi entropy and the non-unitary CFT prediction. Furthermore, we apply the generic entanglement/Rényi entropy to symmetry-protected topological phases with non-Hermitian perturbations. We find the generic n-th Rényi entropy captures the expected entanglement property, whereas the traditional Rényi entropy can exhibit unnatural singularities due to its improper definition.

Entanglement spectrum and entropy in topological non-Hermitian systems and nonunitary conformal field theory

Po-Yao Chang, Jhih-Shih You, Xueda Wen +1 more

This paper studies the entanglement properties of free-fermion systems without hermiticity. From the entanglement entropy scaling, the authors identify the non-unitary conformal field theory with c=-2 in a PT-symmetric non-Hermitian lattice system hosting topological phases. The entanglement spectrum also can detect the topological properties in the gapped phases, including the PT-symmetric Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and the non-Hermitian Chern insulator.

Entanglement complexification transition driven by a single non-Hermitian impurity

Yao Zhou, Peng Ye

While non-Hermitian bulk systems and their sensitivity to boundary conditions have been extensively studied, how a non-Hermitian boundary affects the entanglement structure of Hermitian critical systems remains largely unexplored. Here we present a fully analytical framework by exactly solving a Hermitian gapless chain with a single non-Hermitian impurity acting as a non-Hermitian boundary. When the entanglement cut is placed at the impurity, we uncover a sharp \emph{entanglement complexification transition}: the logarithmic entanglement entropy retains its scaling form, but the effective central charge evolves from real to complex values, accompanied by a spectral collapse of the correlation matrix. We demonstrate that the real regime follows analytic continuation from a unitary defect conformal field theory (CFT), whereas the complex regime lies entirely beyond this framework. For the latter, we derive an analytical formula in perfect agreement with numerics. Our results reveal that a single non-Hermitian impurity can drive a Hermitian critical system into a nonunitary defect-CFT phase, establishing a rare analytically solvable platform for boundary non-Hermiticity.

Anomalous entanglement scaling from eigenvector nonorthogonality in critical non-Hermitian free fermions

Zhenyu Xiao, Shinsei Ryu

Entanglement carries universal content that labels phases and critical points. We study the entanglement entropy of the steady states of critical non-Hermitian free-fermion chains. It scales logarithmically with subsystem size, but the coefficients vary continuously with the parameters and form a Rényi family that no single central charge can reproduce. We trace this anomaly to an ``imaginary'' Dirac point, a crossing in the imaginary part of the energy where the occupied state switches between two Bloch states. Their nonorthogonality weakens the occupation discontinuity and lowers the logarithmic coefficient. A low-energy expansion yields closed-form coefficients in excellent agreement with lattice numerics in various one-dimensional critical steady states. Remarkably, weak real onsite disorder leaves this logarithmic scaling intact and enhances the entanglement. Our results provide a generic understanding of entanglement in critical non-Hermitian free-fermion steady states.
