Abstract

The critical point of a topological phase transition is described by a conformal field theory (CFT), where the finite-size corrections to the ground state energy are uniquely related to its central charge. We study the finite-size scaling of the energy of non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with parity and time-reversal symmetry ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry. We find that under open boundary condition (OBC), the energy scaling $E(L)\sim c/L$ reveals a negative central charge $c=-2$ at the non-Hermitian critical point, indicative of a non-unitary CFT. Furthermore, we discover a universal scaling function capturing the flow of a system from Dirac CFT with $c=1$ to a non-unitary CFT with $c=-2$. The scaling function demonstrates distinct behaviors at topologically non-trivial and trivial sides of critical points. Notably, within the realm of topological criticality, the scaling function exhibits an universal rise-dip-rise pattern, manifesting a characteristic singularity inherent in the non-Hermitian topological critical points. The analytic expression of the scaling function has been derived and is in good agreement with the numerical results.

Universal Finite-Size Scaling around Topological Quantum Phase Transitions

Tobias Gulden, Michael Janas, Yuting Wang +1 more

The critical point of a topological phase transition is described by a conformal field theory, where finite-size corrections to energy are uniquely related to its central charge. We investigate the finite-size scaling away from criticality and find a scaling function, which discriminates between phases with different topological indices. This function appears to be universal for all five Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes with nontrivial topology in one spatial dimension. We obtain an analytic form of the scaling function and compare it with numerical results.

Thermodynamics and entanglement entropy of the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

D. F. Munoz-Arboleda, R. Arouca, C. Morais Smith

Topological phase transitions are found in a variety of systems and were shown to be deeply related with a thermodynamic description through scaling relations. Here we investigate the entanglement entropy, which is a quantity that captures the central charge of a critical model and the thermodynamics of the nonreciprocal Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. Although this model has been widely studied, the thermodynamic properties reveal interesting physics not explored so far. In order to analyze the boundary effects of the model, we use Hill's thermodynamics to split the grand potential in two contributions: the extensive one, related to the bulk, and the subdivision one, related to the boundaries. Then, we derive the thermodynamic entropy for both the edges and the bulk, and the heat capacity for the bulk at the topological phase transitions. The latter is related to the central charge when the underlying theory is a conformal field theory, whereas the first reveals the resilience of the topological edge states to finite temperatures. The phase transition between phases that are adiabatically connected with the Hermitian SSH model display the well-known behavior of systems within the Dirac universality class, but the transition between phases with complex energies shows an unexpected critical behavior that signals the emergence of an imaginary time crystal.

Non-Hermitian free-fermion critical systems and logarithmic conformal field theory

Iao-Fai Io, Fu-Hsiang Huang, Chang-Tse Hsieh

Conformal invariance often accompanies criticality in Hermitian systems. However, its fate in non-Hermitian settings is less clear, especially near exceptional points where the Hamiltonian becomes non-diagonalizable. Here we investigate whether a 1+1-dimensional gapless non-Hermitian system can admit a conformal description, focusing on a PT-symmetric free-fermion field theory. Working in the biorthogonal formalism, we identify the conformal structure of this theory by constructing a traceless energy-momentum tensor whose Fourier modes generate a Virasoro algebra with central charge $c=-2$. This yields a non-Hermitian, biorthogonal realization of a logarithmic conformal field theory, in which correlation functions exhibit logarithmic scaling and the spectrum forms Virasoro staggered modules that are characterized by universal indecomposability parameters. We further present a microscopic construction and show how the same conformal data (with finite-size corrections) can be extracted from the lattice model at exceptional-point criticality, thereby supporting the field-theory prediction.

Universal finite-size scaling around tricriticality between topologically ordered, symmetry-protected topological, and trivial phases

Ke Wang, Tigran Sedrakyan

Quantum one-dimensional criticality with conformal invariance is known to be characterized by conformal field theory with the inherent central charge ($c$), and universal finite-size amplitudes. Here, the authors demonstrate that around a quantum criticality with $c$=\textonehalf{} and two Majorana boundary modes, the symmetry-breaking effect modifies the finite-size amplitudes from a universal constant to be a universal function of an emergent scale. This finding provides a new perspective to study the interplay of topology and quantum criticality.

Steering of topological criticality in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain via non-Hermitian substitutional impurities

Juan A. Cañas, Guo-Qing Zhang, A. Martín-Ruiz

We investigate the topological phase in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain in the presence of a finite concentration of non-Hermitian substitutional impurities. Our primary focus is the discovery of a deterministic mechanism to actively reconfigure the topological phase boundaries by introducing site-dependent, non-reciprocal intracell and intercell hopping amplitudes. Specifically, breaking the internal structural symmetry of the non-reciprocal impurity hoppings induces a targeted macroscopic displacement of the critical point. This mechanism allows for the controlled expansion or compression of the topological phase strictly via local defect asymmetry. We validate this boundary displacement through finite-size scaling analysis. The extracted correlation length critical exponents ($ν\approx 1.455$ and $ν\approx 1.397$ for symmetric and asymmetric configurations, respectively) confirm a disorder-induced departure from the pristine SSH universality class, with the exponent diverging at high defect densities. We also report an impurity-induced real-to-complex spectral transition geometrically characterized by the Non-Hermitian Skin Effect. Ultimately, our results establish how isolated non-Hermitian asymmetries cooperatively interact to deterministically shift macroscopic topological protection.

Entanglement spectrum and entropy in topological non-Hermitian systems and nonunitary conformal field theory

Po-Yao Chang, Jhih-Shih You, Xueda Wen +1 more

This paper studies the entanglement properties of free-fermion systems without hermiticity. From the entanglement entropy scaling, the authors identify the non-unitary conformal field theory with c=-2 in a PT-symmetric non-Hermitian lattice system hosting topological phases. The entanglement spectrum also can detect the topological properties in the gapped phases, including the PT-symmetric Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and the non-Hermitian Chern insulator.
