Abstract

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are temporal singularities marked by zeros of the Loschmidt echo, yet their underlying quantum-information structure remains elusive. Here, we introduce a momentum-resolved entanglement entropy as a direct probe of DQPTs in translation-invariant free systems. We analytically establish that every critical momentum mode $k^{*}$ associated with a DQPT saturates its entanglement to the maximal value $\ln{2}$, coinciding with the vanishing of the Loschmidt echo. Crucially, we demonstrate that this maximal entanglement universally suppresses information scrambling: a momentum-resolved out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) vanishes identically for all times at $k^{*}$. These three signatures -- Fisher zeros, maximal entanglement, and vanished OTOC -- are proved to be equivalent in both the transverse-field Ising and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models, despite their distinct bipartitions (momentum-pair vs. sublattice). Our results establish a unified, information-theoretic framework for DQPTs, revealing them a points where quantum correlations saturate and information flow halts. This work elevates entanglement and scrambling to central dynamical order parameters, offering a universal perspective on nonequilibrium quantum critically.

Critical Entanglement Dynamics at Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions

Kaiyuan Cao, Mingzhi Li, Xiang-Ping Jiang +2 more

We investigate the critical behavior of momentum-space entanglement entropy at dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) in translationally invariant two-band insulators and superconductors. By analyzing the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, the quantum XY chain, and the Haldane model, we establish that the geometric DQPT condition $\hat{\textbf{d}}_{\textbf{k}}^{i} \cdot \hat{\textbf{d}}_{\textbf{k}}^{f} = 0$ manifests as exact degeneracy $p_{\textbf{k}^{*}}=1/2$ in the entanglement spectrum defined with respect to the post-quench eigenbasis, yielding a maximal momentum-space entropy of $\ln 2$. In one dimension, critical momenta appear as isolated points, whereas in two dimensions they form continuous one-dimensional manifolds, reflecting the dimensional dependence of the underlying critical structure. Importantly, alternative bipartitions such as the sublattice basis produce qualitatively different behavior: the entropy becomes explicitly time-dependent and attains a minimum at DQPT critical times, underscoring the essential role of basis selection. Our results establish that momentum-space entanglement entropy, when evaluated in the appropriate eigenbasis, provides a robust, time-independent diagnostic of DQPTs and offers a unified geometric perspective linking entanglement, topology, and non-equilibrium criticality.

Dynamics of coherence: Maximal quantum Fisher information versus Loschmidt echo

Hadi Cheraghi, S. Mahdavifar

We consider the dynamics of maximal quantum Fisher information (MQFI) after sudden quenches for the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model. Our results show, the same as Loschmidt echo, that there is a universality for the revival times, i.e., they do not depend on the initial state and the size of the quench and are given by integer multiples of ${T}_{\text{rev}}\ensuremath{\simeq}\frac{N}{2{v}_{\text{max}}}$, where $N$ is the system size and ${v}_{\text{max}}$ is the maximal group velocity of quasiparticles. Critically enhanced and decreased at revival and decay times as ${T}_{\text{rev}}\ensuremath{\equiv}{T}_{\text{dec}}$ are characterized by quenching from the order and disorder phases into the quantum phase transition, respectively, that can be utilized to detect the quantum critical point (QCP). In some quenches crossed from the QCP, nonanalytic behaviors appear at some times due to the turning of the local observable from one direction to another because of identifying the maximum value. We name this phenomenon the dynamical MQFI transitions, occurring at the critical times ${t}_{c}$. Interestingly, although no Fisher zero exists in the dynamics of MQFI, the first critical time emerged from the dynamical quantum phase transition is equal to the first time when the logarithm of MQFI is minimum. In addition, we unveil the long-time run of MQFI indicates a signature of a nonequilibrium quantum phase transition at the QCP. We also discuss the probability of the arising of macroscopic superpositions in the nonequilibrium dynamics of the system.

Asymmetry and dynamical criticality

Andesson B. Nascimento, Lucas Chibebe Céleri

Symmetries play a central role in both equilibrium and nonequilibrium phase transitions, yet their quantitative characterization in dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) remains an open challenge. In this work, we establish a direct connection between symmetry properties of a many-body model and measures of quantum asymmetry, showing that asymmetry monotones provide a robust and physically transparent indicator of dynamical quantum criticality. Focusing on the quenched Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, we demonstrate that asymmetry measures associated with collective spin generators faithfully capture the onset of DQPTs, reflecting the dynamical restoration or breaking of underlying symmetries. Remarkably, the time-averaged asymmetry exhibits clear signatures of the dynamical critical point, in close correspondence with both the dynamical order parameter and the behavior of entropy production. We further uncover a quantitative link between asymmetry generation and thermodynamic irreversibility, showing that peaks in asymmetry coincide with maximal entropy production across the transition. Our results position asymmetry as a unifying concept bridging symmetry, information-theoretic quantifiers, and nonequilibrium thermodynamics in dynamical quantum phase transitions, providing a powerful framework for understanding critical dynamics beyond traditional order parameters.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions and non-Markovian dynamics

Thi Ha Kyaw, V. M. Bastidas, Jirawat Tangpanitanon +2 more

In the context of closed quantum systems, when a system prepared in its ground state undergoes a sudden quench, the resulting Loschmidt echo can exhibit zeros, resembling the Fisher zeros in the theory of classical equilibrium phase transitions. These zeros lead to nonanalytical behavior of the corresponding rate function, which is referred to as the dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT). In this paper, we investigate DQPTs in the context of open quantum systems that are coupled to both Markovian and non-Markovian dephasing baths via a conserved quantity. The general framework is corroborated by studying the nonequilibrium dynamics of a transverse-field Ising ring. Our paper might shed light on theoretical developments of DQPTs in the strong system-bath coupling regime.

Detecting equilibrium and dynamical quantum phase transitions via out-of-time-ordered correlators

Markus Heyl, Frank Pollmann, Balázs Dóra

Out-of-time-ordered (OTO) correlators have developed into a central concept quantifying quantum information transport, information scrambling and quantum chaos. In this work we show that such OTO correlator can also be used to dynamically detect equilibrium as well as nonequilibrium phase transitions. We study OTO correlators of an order parameter around quantum critical points both in equilibrium and after a quantum quench by focusing on variants of transverse field Ising models, including the integrable one as well as non-integrable and long-range extensions. We find that the asymptotic long-time value of the OTO correlator signals the equilibrium critical points and ordered phases, and can serve as a putative order parameter for a dynamical quantum phase transition. This also implies that the late time value of the OTO commutator of the order parameter reaches a sizable value in the disordered phase even in the presence of well defined quasiparticles, in much the same way as is expected in chaotic systems. We discuss how our findings can be observed in current experiments of trapped ions or Rydberg atoms.

Dynamical quantum phase transition with singular multipartite entanglement

Jie Chen, Ricardo Costa de Almeida, Hendrik Weimer

We investigate the nonequilibrium quench dynamics of the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model in both integrable and nonintegrable regimes. In particular, we report on a novel type of dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT) that is characterized by a singular multipartite entanglement signature occurring at critical times in the post-quench dynamics. We show that this behavior is fundamentally distinct from previously studied DQPTs characterized by a nonanalytic rate function. We quantify the multipartite entanglement of the state by the quantum Fisher information and demonstrate that the DQPT belongs to a different universality class than the ground-state phase transition. Furthermore, we perform a spectral analysis of the DQPT and demonstrate that it is a genuine nonequilibrium transition arising from the constructive interference of excited states of the system during the many-body dynamics. Finally, we discuss potential experimental realizations in Rydberg platforms as well as applications in the context of quantum metrology.
