Abstract

We investigate the critical behavior of momentum-space entanglement entropy at dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) in translationally invariant two-band insulators and superconductors. By analyzing the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, the quantum XY chain, and the Haldane model, we establish that the geometric DQPT condition $\hat{\textbf{d}}_{\textbf{k}}^{i} \cdot \hat{\textbf{d}}_{\textbf{k}}^{f} = 0$ manifests as exact degeneracy $p_{\textbf{k}^{*}}=1/2$ in the entanglement spectrum defined with respect to the post-quench eigenbasis, yielding a maximal momentum-space entropy of $\ln 2$. In one dimension, critical momenta appear as isolated points, whereas in two dimensions they form continuous one-dimensional manifolds, reflecting the dimensional dependence of the underlying critical structure. Importantly, alternative bipartitions such as the sublattice basis produce qualitatively different behavior: the entropy becomes explicitly time-dependent and attains a minimum at DQPT critical times, underscoring the essential role of basis selection. Our results establish that momentum-space entanglement entropy, when evaluated in the appropriate eigenbasis, provides a robust, time-independent diagnostic of DQPTs and offers a unified geometric perspective linking entanglement, topology, and non-equilibrium criticality.

Maximal Entanglement and Frozen Information: A Unified Framework for Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions

Kaiyuan Cao, Mingzhi Li, Xiang-Ping Jiang +2 more

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are temporal singularities marked by zeros of the Loschmidt echo, yet their underlying quantum-information structure remains elusive. Here, we introduce a momentum-resolved entanglement entropy as a direct probe of DQPTs in translation-invariant free systems. We analytically establish that every critical momentum mode $k^{*}$ associated with a DQPT saturates its entanglement to the maximal value $\ln{2}$, coinciding with the vanishing of the Loschmidt echo. Crucially, we demonstrate that this maximal entanglement universally suppresses information scrambling: a momentum-resolved out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) vanishes identically for all times at $k^{*}$. These three signatures -- Fisher zeros, maximal entanglement, and vanished OTOC -- are proved to be equivalent in both the transverse-field Ising and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models, despite their distinct bipartitions (momentum-pair vs. sublattice). Our results establish a unified, information-theoretic framework for DQPTs, revealing them a points where quantum correlations saturate and information flow halts. This work elevates entanglement and scrambling to central dynamical order parameters, offering a universal perspective on nonequilibrium quantum critically.

Entanglement in quenched extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with anomalous dynamical quantum phase transitions

Cheuk Yiu Wong, Tsz Hin Hui, Pedro D Sacramento +1 more

Research on topological models unveils fascinating physics, especially in the realm of dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs). However, the understanding of entanglement structures and properties near DQPT in models with longer-range hoppings is far from complete. In this work, we study DQPTs in the quenched extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Anomalous DQPTs, where the number of critical momenta exceeds the winding number differences between the prequench and postquench phases, are observed. We find that the entanglement exhibits local maximum (minimum) around the anomalous DQPTs, in line with the level crossings (separations) around the middle of the correlation matrix spectrum. We further categorize the phases in the equilibrium model into two classes and distinctive features in the time evolution of the entanglement involving quenches within and across the two classes are identified. The findings pave the way to a better understanding of topological models with longer-range hoppings in the out-of-equilibrium regime.

Quasiperiodic dynamical quantum phase transitions in multiband topological insulators and connections with entanglement entropy and fidelity susceptibility

Tomasz Masłowski, Nicholas Sedlmayr

We investigate the Loschmidt amplitude and dynamical quantum phase transitions in multiband one-dimensional topological insulators. For this purpose we introduce a new solvable multiband model based on the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, generalized to unit cells containing many atoms but with the same symmetry properties. Such models have a richer structure of dynamical quantum phase transitions than the simple two-band topological insulator models typically considered previously, with both quasiperiodic and aperiodic dynamical quantum phase transitions present. Moreover, the aperiodic transitions can still occur for quenches within a single topological phase. We also investigate the boundary contributions from the presence of the topologically protected edge states of this model. Plateaus in the boundary return rate are related to the topology of the time-evolving Hamiltonian and hence to a dynamical bulk-boundary correspondence. We go on to consider the dynamics of the entanglement entropy generated after a quench and its potential relation to the critical times of the dynamical quantum phase transitions. Finally, we investigate the fidelity susceptibility as an indicator of the topological phase transitions and find a simple scaling law as a function of the number of bands of our multiband model which is found to be the same for both bulk and boundary fidelity susceptibilities.

On the Relation Between String Order Parameters, Entanglement, and Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions in Topological Dynamics

Sirshendu Bhattacharyya, Szczepan Głodzik, Nicholas Sedlmayr

Topological order is defined by topological invariants, rather than symmetries and local order parameters. Nonetheless some topological phases can be characterized by string order parameters and entanglement. In this article we study how string order parameters and entanglement spectra behave out-of-equilibrium following quenches in one dimensional topological models with $\mathbb{Z}$ invariants. Previously it has been suggested that string order parameters could serve as an experimental probe of dynamical quantum phase transitions. Despite the existence of clear zeroes in the order parameters at critical times, we show that in general there is no exact quantitative or qualitative connection with the critical times of dynamical quantum phase transitions. Another possible connection is of dynamical string order parameter zeroes and dynamical crossings at the center of entanglement spectra. Here we see that there can sometimes be a connection, but it is not typical. Again there is no general quantitative or qualitative connection. Each dynamical form of criticality behaves independently, though we do see that critical times tend to be of the same order of magnitude and give an argument for why this is the case. We also find that a string order parameter which labels one topological phase can undergo non-trivial dynamics even following a quench between \emph{other} topological phases. We elucidate where connections can be made, and where they result from a consideration of insufficiently general models. These results cast doubt on the idea of genuine dynamical phases following quenches in such models.

Asymmetry and dynamical criticality

Andesson B. Nascimento, Lucas Chibebe Céleri

Symmetries play a central role in both equilibrium and nonequilibrium phase transitions, yet their quantitative characterization in dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) remains an open challenge. In this work, we establish a direct connection between symmetry properties of a many-body model and measures of quantum asymmetry, showing that asymmetry monotones provide a robust and physically transparent indicator of dynamical quantum criticality. Focusing on the quenched Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, we demonstrate that asymmetry measures associated with collective spin generators faithfully capture the onset of DQPTs, reflecting the dynamical restoration or breaking of underlying symmetries. Remarkably, the time-averaged asymmetry exhibits clear signatures of the dynamical critical point, in close correspondence with both the dynamical order parameter and the behavior of entropy production. We further uncover a quantitative link between asymmetry generation and thermodynamic irreversibility, showing that peaks in asymmetry coincide with maximal entropy production across the transition. Our results position asymmetry as a unifying concept bridging symmetry, information-theoretic quantifiers, and nonequilibrium thermodynamics in dynamical quantum phase transitions, providing a powerful framework for understanding critical dynamics beyond traditional order parameters.

Non-Hermitian topological phases and dynamical quantum phase transitions: a generic connection

Longwen Zhou, Qianqian Du

Abstract The dynamical and topological properties of non-Hermitian systems have attracted great attention in recent years. In this work, we establish an intrinsic connection between two classes of intriguing phenomena—topological phases and dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs)—in non-Hermitian systems. Focusing on one-dimensional models with chiral symmetry, we find DQPTs following the quench from a trivial to a non-Hermitian topological phase. Moreover, the critical momenta and critical time of the DQPTs are found to be directly related to the topological invariants of the non-Hermitian system. We further demonstrate our theory in three prototypical non-Hermitian lattice models, the lossy Kitaev chain (LKC), the LKC with next-nearest-neighbor hoppings, and the nonreciprocal Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model. Finally, we suggest a proposal to experimentally verify the found connection by a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond.
