Abstract

We investigate the nonequilibrium quench dynamics of the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model in both integrable and nonintegrable regimes. In particular, we report on a novel type of dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT) that is characterized by a singular multipartite entanglement signature occurring at critical times in the post-quench dynamics. We show that this behavior is fundamentally distinct from previously studied DQPTs characterized by a nonanalytic rate function. We quantify the multipartite entanglement of the state by the quantum Fisher information and demonstrate that the DQPT belongs to a different universality class than the ground-state phase transition. Furthermore, we perform a spectral analysis of the DQPT and demonstrate that it is a genuine nonequilibrium transition arising from the constructive interference of excited states of the system during the many-body dynamics. Finally, we discuss potential experimental realizations in Rydberg platforms as well as applications in the context of quantum metrology.

Direct Observation of Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions in an Interacting Many-Body System

Petar Jurcevic, Heng Shen, Philipp Hauke +7 more

The theory of phase transitions represents a central concept for the characterization of equilibrium matter. In this work we study experimentally an extension of this theory to the nonequilibrium dynamical regime termed dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs). We investigate and measure DQPTs in a string of ions simulating interacting transverse-field Ising models. During the nonequilibrium dynamics induced by a quantum quench we show for strings of up to 10 ions the direct detection of DQPTs by revealing nonanalytic behavior in time. Moreover, we provide a link between DQPTs and the dynamics of other quantities such as the magnetization, and we establish a connection between DQPTs and entanglement production.

Many-body dynamical phase transition in a quasiperiodic potential

Ranjan Modak, Debraj Rakshit

Much has been learned regarding dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT) due to sudden quenches across quantum critical points in traditional quantum systems. However, not much has been explored when a system undergoes a localization-delocalization transition. Here, we study one-dimensional fermionic systems in presence of a quasiperiodic potential, which induces delocalization-localization transition even in one dimension. We show signatures of DQPT in the many-body dynamics, when quenching is performed between phases belonging to different universality classes. We investigate how the nonanalyticity in the dynamical free energy gets affected with filling fractions in the bare system and, further, study the fate of DQPT under interaction. Strikingly, whenever quenching is performed from the low-entangled localized phase to the high-entangled delocalized phase, our studies suggest an intimate relationship between DQPT and the rate of the entanglement growth: Faster growths of entanglement entropy ensures quicker manifestation of the nonanalyticities in the many-body dynamical free energy.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions and non-Markovian dynamics

Thi Ha Kyaw, V. M. Bastidas, Jirawat Tangpanitanon +2 more

In the context of closed quantum systems, when a system prepared in its ground state undergoes a sudden quench, the resulting Loschmidt echo can exhibit zeros, resembling the Fisher zeros in the theory of classical equilibrium phase transitions. These zeros lead to nonanalytical behavior of the corresponding rate function, which is referred to as the dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT). In this paper, we investigate DQPTs in the context of open quantum systems that are coupled to both Markovian and non-Markovian dephasing baths via a conserved quantity. The general framework is corroborated by studying the nonequilibrium dynamics of a transverse-field Ising ring. Our paper might shed light on theoretical developments of DQPTs in the strong system-bath coupling regime.

Quantum-coherence-assisted dynamical phase transition in the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model

Bao-Ming Xu

Abstract Quantum coherence will undoubtedly play a fundamental role in understanding the dynamics of quantum many-body systems; therefore, to be able to reveal its genuine contribution is of great importance. In this paper, we focus our discussions on the one-dimensional transverse field quantum Ising model initialized in the coherent Gibbs state, and investigate the effects of quantum coherence on dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT). After quenching the strength of the transverse field, the effects of quantum coherence are studied using Fisher zeros and the rate function of the Loschmidt echo. We find that quantum coherence not only recovers DQPT destroyed by thermal fluctuations, but also generates some entirely new DQPTs, which are independent of the equilibrium quantum critical point. We also find that the Fisher zero cutting the imaginary axis is not sufficient to generate DQPT because it also requires the Fisher zeros to be tightly bound close enough to the neighborhood of the imaginary axis. It can be manifested that DQPTs are rooted in quantum fluctuations. This work reveals new information on the fundamental connection between quantum critical phenomena and quantum coherence.

Multipartite entanglement at dynamical quantum phase transitions with nonuniformly spaced criticalities

Stav Haldar, Saptarshi Roy, Titas Chanda +2 more

We report a dynamical quantum phase transition portrait in the alternating field transverse XY spin chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction by investigating singularities in the Loschmidt echo and the corresponding rate function after a sudden quench of system parameters. Unlike the Ising model, the analysis of the Loschmidt echo yields nonuniformly spaced transition times in this model. Comparative study between the equilibrium and the dynamical quantum phase transitions in this case reveals that there are quenches where one occurs without the other and reveals the regimes where they coexist. However, such transitions happen only when quenching is performed across at least a single gapless or critical line. Contrary to equilibrium phase transitions, bipartite entanglement measures do not turn out to be useful for the detection, while multipartite entanglement emerges as a good identifier of this transition when the quench is done from a disordered phase of this model.
